Wednesday’s racing at Cheltenham is probably the worst for decent betting opportunities during the whole week. There are more short priced favourites here today than the rest of the meeting put together with the likes of Envoi Allen, Defi Du Seuil, Tiger Roll and Appreciate It all fancied to go in at short odds. So to find some value I have looked at the other three races on the card plus a fancy I have to upset the favourite in the bumper.
At 2.10 the RSA Insurance Novices Chase has Champ as favourite and Nicky Henderson’s gelding has been fancied for this all winter but his jumping is not sound. Colin Tizzard’s Copperhead has won his last three and was impressive in his latest victory at Ascot but he represents poor value. I have a liking for Slate House who won three races this season before being pulled up here at Cheltenham last time, when it was reported he was never travelling. I fancy him to bounce back from that.

The Coral Cup Handicap Hurdle is at 2.50 and it is as open as usual. Nicky Henderson has a strong hand with Birchdale and Dame de Compagnie but I go for a big outsider. Henry Daly has Honest Vic in the lineup, after his latest win at Kempton on Boxing Day he has been put away in preparation for this.
At 4.50 we have the Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle and Gordon Elliott has the main fancy here with Aramax but I like the look of another Irish challenger, Gavin Cromwell’s Theatre Of War who ran a very good second in a Maiden Hurdle at Leopardstown’s Christmas meeting.
In the Weatherbys Champion Bumper at 5.30 Willie Mullins’s Appreciate It is a hot favourite after two Bumper wins at Leopardstown but David Pipe’s Israel Champ has also won a couple including one at Cheltenham. Pipe won this contest five years ago and can break the Irish stranglehold on this contest
