Game Week-38

So the finale of the 2023/24 Premier League is upon us with 1 game to go to determine the Title Winners, the European Places and those who face Relegation.

All of these Game Week-38 fixtures are the reverse of Game Week-5 that took place in mid-September 2023.

ARSENAL v EVERTON

16.00 in England

Arsenal gained a victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday to keep their Title Dreams alive.

A single Leandro Trossard goal scored midway through the 1st-half, gave Mikel’s Young Guns the win from a 1-0 scoreline.

With Man City getting a victory the day before, it was imperative that Arsenal matched that to take the Title Race to the final fixture of the campaign, regardless of whether City gained a victory over Tottenham on Tuesday.

As it turned out, Pep’s High Flying Blues did get the win over Ange’s Spurs and now sit at the summit of the Premier League Table with 88 points.

That’s 2 points ahead of Arsenal so the simple narrative is, that Arsenal will need a victory against Everton (more than likely) and then hope West Ham do their London counterparts a favour and inflict a defeat on Man City at the Etihad (less than likely!)

One would suggest to Mikel Arteta that he goes out and buys a Lotto Ticket as he has more chance of winning that, than the Hammers getting a win over Pep’s High Flying Blues, especially considering, that it will be David Moyes’ final fixture in charge so it’s doubtful that the players will want to exert too much energy.

At least Arsenal and Man City are at home and are facing teams that are really at the same motivation level, with both Everton and West Ham having nothing to play for, so it’s more than likely that the Gunners and the Blues will both achieve a final fixture victory.

The Premier League Champions are such due to the results over a 38-game campaign not just winning on the last day of the season.

If Arsenal do get the victory against Everton and somehow Man City draw against West Ham, the picture would see the following,

Arsenal- played 38, points 89, scored 89 (plus the ones against the Toffees) and conceded 28 (again, plus the ones, if any, against the Toffees), meaning the goal difference is (at the moment) plus+ 61.

Man City- played 38, points 89, scored 93 (plus the ones against the Hammers) and conceded 33 (again, plus the ones, if any, against the Hammers) meaning the goal difference is (at the moment) plus+ 60.

This would mean, Arsenal’s Title, however, one feels that Man City will get the victory and gain a 4th Title in a row.

In the history of the Premier League, those who have won the Title, Manchester United, Blackburn, Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City, Leicester and Liverpool were all at the summit come the final day of the campaign, meaning no team has ever been overhauled in Game Week-38/42.

At least Sunday will be an exciting finale to the 2023/24 Premier League campaign.

Well, it definitely will be for the Manchester Stick and Ball Thrower who used to be a Manchester United fan but is now a closet Arsenal supporter and wants his beloved Gunners to do anything that would prevent Man City from gaining the Title.

The Iccle Fat Lad from Penistone probably thinks it’s Game Week-24 and won’t have a clue what’s happening at the summit of the Premier League, out playing Golf or delivering Parcels somewhere, bless him!

Everton gained a victory over Sheffield United at Goodison Park on Saturday.

Abdoulaye Doucoure scored the only goal of the game on the half-hour mark to give Sean Dyche’s Toffees the points from a 1-0 scoreline.

That gives Everton 40 points and leaves the Toffees in 15th place with this fixture remaining.

A surprise victory today against Arsenal, wouldn’t improve the league position as Fulham in 14th, have 44 points.

Brentford, who sit a place and a point below Everton, are the only team that can overhaul Sean’s Men, so at worst, the Toffees will finish in 16th.

Some might say, that it’s irrelevant what position a team finishes in, whether mid-table or the lower half, as long as relegation is avoided, however, that’s not the case as each place in the Premier League is worth around £3 Million more than the one below.

Fifteenth is worth around £19 Million, whereas the 16th place team gets close to £16Million.

Man City (if Champions) will get around £63 Million.

Sheffield United, who have finished in 20th, will be rewarded with just over £3 Million.

So Everton will want to stay in 15th to get £3 Million more than Brentford.

A single Leandro Trossard goal midway through the 2nd-half gave Arsenal the away day victory by a 1-0 scoreline over Everton at Goodison Park.

Betfred offer Arsenal at Odds On 1/7, the draw at 11/2 and 12/1 for Everton to come away with all 3-points.

Betfred offer 4/1 that Bukayo Saka Scores First and slight Odds On 19/20 that Arsenal Win To Nil.

(If your pre-match First Goalscorer bet scores First and then scores a Second, Betfred DOUBLE the odds.

If they score a Third, Betfred TREBLE the odds.)

BRENTFORD v NEWCASTLE

16.00 in England

The Ivan Toney Derby.

If one’s not familiar with Ivan’s past, the Bees Striker started his career at Northampton but was signed by Newcastle back in 2015.

There weren’t many appearances in the iconic Black and White Shirt for Mr T, with several loans, including a couple of spells at Oakwell, that produced a Johnstone Paints Trophy win and Promotion via the League One Play-offs whilst at Barnsley in 2016.

Unfortunately, Ivan didn’t train on at St James Park, resulting in leaving Newcastle and joining Peterborough permanently, before heading South to Brentford back in 2020.

The rest, as one says, is history (and the future) which could possibly see IT in the England Squad for the upcoming Euro’24s in Germany, even if Gareth Southgate just takes the Bee for the inevitable penalty shootout.

All the best Ivan Toney and Ethan Pinnock.

Brentford gained a victory over Bournemouth at the Vitality on Saturday.

After a goalless 85 minutes, suddenly the game kicked into life with Bryan Mbeumo scoring the opener for the Bees.

Bournemouth quickly scored an equaliser and with 9 additional minutes offered up, Yoane Wissa scored the winner in the 95th minute to give Thomas Frank’s team the points from a 2-1 away day score.

That leaves Brentford in 16th place with 39 points from 37 games completed.

As mentioned earlier, it’s now a matter as to whether the Bees can overhaul the Toffees as 15th is the highest position Brentford can achieve, with 16th being the lowest.

Newcastle gained a point from a draw by a 1-1 score against Brighton on Saturday.

Sean Longstaff scored on the stroke of half-time to equalise an earlier Brighton goal to take both teams in level at the break.

With no further goals in the 2nd-half, both teams earned a point apiece.

It was then a visit to Old-Old Trafford on Wednesday where United took the lead midway through the 1st-half to lead at the break.

Newcastle equalised within 5 minutes of the restart, with Anthony Gordon tapping home to make it 1-1.

Unfortunately for everyone connected with the Magpies, United scored a 2nd and a 3rd after the break, to inflict the defeat by a 3-2 scoreline, (Lewis Hall scored a very late 2nd goal for the away team) leaving Newcastle in 7th with the same 57 points as Manchester United but with a slightly better goal difference.

The 5th-8th places look like the following going into the final round on Sunday,

5th- Tottenham- played 37, points 63, scored 71 and conceded 61 (plus+ 10)

6th- Chelsea- played 37, points 60, scored 75 and conceded 62 (plus+ 13)

7th- Newcastle- played 37, points 57 scored 81 and conceded 60 (plus+ 21)

8th- Manchester United- played 37, points 57, scored 55 and conceded 58 (minus- 3)

Newcastle also have an ex-Barnsley loanee, him being Kieran Trippier who had a spell in Yorkshire back in 2010.

There was a youngster coming through the ranks at Oakwell at the same time that Kieran was in situ, who no doubt picked up a few pointers from the England International.

John Stones was in the Barnsley Academy and although never played in the first team with Kieran Trippier, will more than likely be playing together for England in the Euro’24 along with Ivan Toney.

John Newsome remembers the 40 or so games that KT played in the iconic Reds Shirt, however, cannot believe it is 14 years ago.

Where does the time go?

All the best Kieran Trippier.

Newcastle gained the victory over Brentford at St James Park back in September.

Callum Wilson converted a penalty, just after the hour mark, to give Eddie’s Magpies the win by a 1-0 score.

Betfred offer Brentford at 21/10, the draw at 13/5 and Evens 1/1 for Newcastle to come away with all 3-points.

Betfred offer 5/1 that Ivan Toney Scores First and Evens 1/1 that there are Over 3.5 Goals.

(If your pre-match First Goalscorer bet scores First and then scores a Second, Betfred DOUBLE the odds.

If they score a Third, Betfred TREBLE the odds.)

BRIGHTON v MANCHESTER UNITED

16.00 in England

‘When the Seagulls follow the Trawler, it is because they think, Sardines will be thrown into the Sea, Thank you!’

The famous quote by the legend that is Eric Cantona, given to journalists back in 1995 following the ban imposed on the Frenchman after the ‘Kung-Fu Kick’ at Selhurst Park.

Brighton gained a point from a draw by a 1-1 score against Newcastle at St James Park on Saturday.

Joel Veltman scored for the Seagulls in the 18th minute before the Magpies equalised on the stroke of half-time.

With no further goals, both of the Flying Teams gained a point apiece.

Like today’s opponents, there was an extra game to fit in, that being against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

Unfortunately for the Sunbathing Seagulls, Brighton suffered a defeat against Chelsea by a 2-1 away night score, leaving Roberto De Zerbi’s men in 10th place with the same 48 points as Bournemouth but a place higher due to the goal difference.

Danny Welbeck scored a late consolation goal for Brighton to give the Seagulls hope of a comeback, however, time ran out meaning Roberto De Zerbi’s men suffered the loss.

Leaving Brighton in 10th place with the same 48 points as Bournemouth but a place higher due to a superior goal difference.

Manchester United suffered the expected defeat against Arsenal at the newly named Old Old Trafford on Sunday.

In truth, United did put up a better display than that against Crystal Palace (it probably was impossible not to!) but were undone by a single Gunners goal, scored midway through the 1st-half to ultimately lose the game by a 1-0 score.

The problem that Erik Ten Hag has had over the past few weeks is injuries to his players, none more so than at the back where Casermiro has had to start at Centre-Half.

Casermiro isn’t a Centre-Half and the lack of pace and frailty in that position has resulted in United conceding 13 goals in the 6 games that Cassie has played in Defence.

There are a lot of players supposedly injured at the moment, which, one doesn’t want to question their integrity but the ex-United Striker Wayne Rooney has suggested that the said players may not be as injured as they make out.

Are these players crying off as not wanting to be a part of the sorry set of United performances at the moment?

Will Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford be injured in June when England play in the Euros?

Added to those, will the Arm Thrower Bruno Fernandes be ‘injured’ when Portugal head to Germany?

To be fair to Bruno, the Captain was back for the game against Newcastle on Wednesday.

The defeat against Arsenal left United in 8th place in the Premier League Table with 54 points.

There was then another game at Old-Old Trafford against Newcastle on Wednesday, the final home game of the sorry campaign, that allowed the Red Devil faithful one final sing of the old favourites such as,

‘We want Glazer’s out!’

’20 times, 20 times Man United!’

‘Take Me Home Country Road!’

And a personal favourite,

‘Ooh Ahhh Eric Cantona!’

The song ’20 times’ refers to the 20 League Titles United have won in the history of the club, including the old Division One crown plus the ones in the Premier League era.

‘Twenty-one’ times won’t be in the Pop Charts anytime soon.

John Denver or Joan as Del Boy refers to the legend, would be turning in his grave having one of his iconic songs sung by the Manchester United faithful.

United did gain a penultimate game victory over Newcastle by a narrow 3-2 scoreline.

Kobbie Mainoo, Amad Diallo and Rasmus Hojlund with the goals that, although a victory, still left United in 8th place with the same 57 points as Newcastle but with a slightly inferior goal difference.

The following was put in the Brentford v Newcastle Preview above but it’s worth including in this section plus the ones involving Chelsea and Tottenham.

The 5th-8th places look like the following going into the final round on Sunday,

5th- Tottenham- played 37, points 63, scored 71 and conceded 61 (plus+ 10)

6th- Chelsea- played 37, points 60, scored 75 and conceded 62 (plus+ 13)

7th- Newcastle- played 37, points 57 scored 81 and conceded 60 (plus+ 21)

8th- Manchester United- played 37, points 57, scored 55 and conceded 58 (minus- 3)

It’s staggering to think that Manchester United have a minus goal difference, (minus-3) added to the current 8th place, which would be the lowest Premier League finish ever.

The last time United finished outside the Top Seven was in the old Division One back in the 1989/90 campaign, when Fergie’s Fledglings finished in 13th place.

Thirteenth!

Manchester United did win the FA Cup that year so maybe there is still hope of a positive outcome, however, Fergie’s Red Devils faced Steve Coppell’s Crystal Palace, not Pep’s High Flying Blues.

There is speculation regarding Erik Ten Hag’s future at Old Trafford and despite a few saying they would keep the Dutch Lad (one being the Chorley Hope) John Newsome believes that ETH’s time will come to an end this summer, with the possibility that Gareth Southgate will replace Erik after the Euros.

A lot won’t want Gareth at Old Trafford, however, this EveryTip contributor does think it would be a good appointment as Mr Southgate’s pragmatic approach would steady the ship.

That’s for the future, for now, Erik’s Ten Bobs have this final fixture at the Amex to contend with, to at least try and get United a place in a European Competition.

Usually, it would be a surprise if one stated that Manchester United suffered a defeat in any fixture but it’s becoming the norm at the moment, as with the reverse fixture at Old Old Trafford back in September.

Brighton gained the away day victory over United by a 3-1 score.

The ex-United Striker and True Manc Lad, Danny Welbeck scored the opener to give Brighton a lead at the interval.

Pascal Gross and Joao Pedro added 2 and 3 in the 2nd-half before Hannibal Mejbri scored, what ultimately, was a consolation goal for United.

At the time, if one remembers, Hannibal Mejbri was supposed to be the new United Superstar, yet for some reason, Erik Ten Hag decided that the lad wasn’t good enough for this Manchester United team and sent Hannibal out on loan to Sevilla.

As the season progressed, can one say that Mr Mejbri, if he had stayed at Old-Old Trafford, would have done worse than Casermiro, Mason Mount, Christian Eriksen, Sofyan Amrabat or any other of the sorry set of individuals that have worn a United Shirt this season.

Betfred offer Brighton at Evens 1/1, the draw at 11/4 and 2/1 for Manchester United to come away with all 3-points.

Betfred offer 5/1 that Joao Pedro Scores First and 23/20 that Brighton Score in Both Halves.

(If your pre-match First Goalscorer bet scores First and then scores a Second, Betfred DOUBLE the odds.

If they score a Third, Betfred TREBLE the odds.)

BURNLEY v NOTTINGHAM FOREST

16.00 in England

The Chris Wood Derby.

Chris Wood faces his old team at Turf Moor, where the New Zealand Striker spent 5 seasons.

To be fair, Chris has had more clubs than Tiger Woods, however, Burnley is the team that CW played the most games for in his illustrious career.

As with other previews, John Newsome likes to include who has worn the iconic Barnsley Jersey and that does include Chris Wood who had 7 appearances for the Yorkshire club back in 2010.

Again this EveryTip contributor remembers Chris having a runout and again, cannot believe it’s 14 years ago.

It’s fair to say that Mr Wood didn’t want to be in Barnsley and wasn’t that enamoured about playing at Oakwell, scoring the total amount of Zero Goals, added to the fact that CW couldn’t hit a Cows’ Backside with a Banjo.

All the best Chris Wood.

The inevitability of relegation was confirmed on Saturday following Burnley’s defeat against Tottenham at the Chas and Dave Memorial Stadium.

Jacob Bruun-Larsen did score first for the Clarets to gain an early advantage, however, Spurs scored an equaliser to take both teams in level at the break.

Tottenham scored a 2nd late on to inflict the defeat on Burnley by a 2-1 scoreline and confirm the fact that Burnley along with Sheffield United and Luton are heading back to the Championship after 1 season.

One will look at the points tally of Luton and see that there are only 3 between themselves and Nottingham Forest, so a victory for the Hatters married with a defeat for the Tricky Trees would put both teams on the same 29 points.

That is correct, however, Luton would have to overturn a 12-goal swing to stay up, meaning Nottingham Forest would have to lose by 6 goals added to Luton getting the win by 6 goals (other 12 goal swings are available).

It isn’t going to happen, so Luton, whilst at the moment, not mathematically relegated, are just going through the motions and will be in the Championship next season.

The 3 teams who were promoted last season will all be relegated, which has only occurred once in the Premier League’s
existence and that was back in 1997/98 when all of Bolton, Barnsley and Crystal Palace went back to the Championship after one season in the Promised Land.

One of England’s best-ever Sportsman, James Anderson, has announced his retirement from the England Cricket Team.

James has taken 700 wickets, which is the highest number achieved by a Fast Bowler.

Only Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan and the legendary Australian Bowler, Shane Warne have taken more wickets in International Test Cricket than Jimmy and both were Spin Bowlers.

James Anderson is a native of Burnley and a massive Clarets fan who will no doubt be a regular at Turf Moor now when retirement kicks in.

Mr Anderson has been afforded one last Test Match, which will be against the West Indies on July the 10th at Lord’s, that will allow the Cricket World to pay their respects to the legend and give the lad a great send-off.

All the best for the future James Anderson.

Nottingham Forest suffered a narrow defeat in the late Saturday Afternoon Football against Chelsea at the City Ground.

After conceding a Blues goal early in play, Willy Boly scored an equaliser to leave both teams level at the break.

Callum Hudson-Odoi, who scored twice against Sheffield United last week, scored again with a similar goal to give Forest a lead against Chelsea.

Unfortunately, for the Tricky Trees faithful, the lead didn’t last long with Chelsea scoring 2 quick-fire goals to inflict the defeat by a 3-2 away day score.

The following was put in this EveryTip column back in February 2024, in the Game Week-25 Preview,

‘Nottingham Forest were on the wrong end of a 3-2 score against Newcastle at the City Ground on Saturday, which is fast becoming Forest’s fateful scoreline, occurring 6 times in the 24 Premier League fixtures played so far.

It’s worth noting that the Tricky Trees have suffered defeats in all 6 games.’

The defeat on Saturday against Chelsea made it 7 times that Forest have suffered a loss by the dreaded 3-2 scoreline.

A point would have guaranteed safety, however, although safety wasn’t confirmed on Saturday, Forest, who sit in 17th place with 29 points, 3 points more than Luton, would have to suffer a defeat today added to a victory for Luton and a goal swing of 12, which isn’t going to happen, meaning Nottingham Forest will be in the Premier League next season.

There is someone out there who will be pleased with the fact that Forest are not relegated, him being Steve Cooper, who oversaw just short of half of the campaign but was sacked, allowing Nuno Espírito Santo to come in and help keep the Tricky Trees in the Promised Land.

Both teams shared the points from a draw by a 1-1 score at the City Ground back in September.

Zeki Amdouni scored first for Burnley just before the half-time whistle to give the Clarets a lead at the break.

Callum Hudson-Odoi replied for the Tricky Trees on the hour mark and with no further goals both teams gained a point apiece.

Betfred offer Burnley at 13/8, the draw at 12/5 and 13/10 for Nottingham Forest to come away with all 3-points.

Betfred offer 9/2 that Chris Wood Scores First and 11/4 that there are Over 4.5 Goals.

(If your pre-match First Goalscorer bet scores First and then scores a Second, Betfred DOUBLE the odds.

If they score a Third, Betfred TREBLE the odds.)

CHELSEA v BOURNEMOUTH

16.00 in England

Chelsea continued their recent good form by inflicting a defeat on Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Saturday.

In a topsy-turvy affair, Mykhailo Mudryk scored the opener in the 8th minute which was quickly equalised to take both teams in level at the break.

Forest then got a 2nd midway through the 2nd-half before Raheem Sterling and Nicolas Jackson scored to give Chelsea the victory by a 3-2 away day score.

That was 7 wins from the last 13 Premier League games, with 5 draws and a loss from the other 6, going into the penultimate game of the season.

Chelsea, like Tottenham, Newcastle and Manchester United, who are all challenging for the minor European places, had a midweek game and faced Brighton at the Amex on Wednesday.

Goals from Cole Palmer and Christopher NKunku, either side of the half-time interval, gave Mauricio’s Blues the victory by a 2-1 scoreline.

Brighton scored a consolation goal late on.

To reiterate, the Top Four go into next season’s Champions League, currently Man City, Arsenal, Liverpool and Aston Villa.

Those finishing 5th (currently Tottenham) play in the Europa League and 6th (Chelsea) go into the Europa Conference League.

Sixth place goes into the Conference League, because Liverpool, who would be in that competition due to winning the Carabao Cup, are already confirmed in the Champions League.

However, whether those finishing in 6th place qualify for the Europa Conference League or Europa League depends on the outcome of the FA Cup Final between Manchester Utd and Man City.

If Man City lift the FA Cup on Saturday 25th of May, the place in the Europa League that the FA Cup winners earn is transferred to the highest-placed league spot without qualifying for a European competition.

As the Europa League is of a higher rank than the Conference League, 6th place in the Premier League (Chelsea) will qualify for the Europa League, with the Europa Conference League spot moving down a place to 7th (Newcastle).

Should Manchester United triumph at Wembley (unlikely) and finish 5th or 6th (again, unlikely) in the Premier League, United will qualify for the Europa League, while the other team finishing in the Top Six will join them in that competition, with the club in 7th going into the Europa Conference League.

However, if Manchester United win the Cup but finish 7th or 8th in the Premier League, only the side in 5th will join United in the Europa League, with the team finishing 6th playing in the Europa Conference League next season.

Therefore 7th (currently Newcastle) will miss out on a European Adventure.

Meaning, regardless of what happens, there will only be 7 English teams in the European competitions.

Don’t worry Magpies, United won’t win the FA Cup!

The statement put out that if Manchester United win the FA Cup but finish outside of the Top Six, then United would be in the Europa League, will probably be deemed redundant as Man City would have to have a pretty bad day to suffer a defeat in the FA Cup Final.

The following was put in the Brentford v Newcastle and Brighton v Manchester United Preview but it’s worth adding to this one and the one involving Tottenham.

The 5th-8th places look like the following going into the final round on Sunday,

5th- Tottenham- played 37, points 63, scored 71 and conceded 61 (plus+ 10)

6th- Chelsea- played 37, points 60, scored 75 and conceded 62 (plus+ 13)

7th- Newcastle- played 37, points 57 scored 81 and conceded 60 (plus+ 21)

8th- Manchester United- played 37, points 57, scored 55 and conceded 58 (minus- 3)

Bournemouth suffered a home defeat at the Vitality against Brentford on Saturday.

With 85 minutes on the clock, it appeared that both teams would share the points from a goalless draw, however, Brentford scored to go in front, which was quickly equalised by Dominic Solanke.

Unfortunately, for the watching Cherries in attendance, their idols couldn’t hold on for a point and conceded a 2nd goal to ultimately suffer the loss by a 2-1 scoreline.

Bournemouth sit in 11th place with the same 48 points as Brighton from 37 games played but a place below purely on goal difference.

Brighton- scored 55 and conceded 60 (minus- 5)

Bournemouth- scored 53 and conceded 65 (minus- 12)

Wolves and Crystal Palace have 46 points and are the only teams that can overhaul the Cherries.

Added to that, 10th place is the highest position that Bournemouth can achieve but as mentioned earlier, that is worth £3 Million more than 11th.

The scorer wasn’t needed at the Vitality for the Game Week-5 encounter with both teams sharing the points from a draw by a 0-0 score, or as some might say, a goalless draw.

It’s more than likely that the redundant scorer, is re-employed for this game at Stamford Bridge as there should be goals today.

Betfred offer Chelsea at Odds On 2/5, the draw at 18/5 and 9/2 for Bournemouth to come away with all 3-points.

Betfred offer 5/1 that Nicolas Jackson Scores First and 7/5 that Dominic Solanke Scores Anytime.

(If your pre-match First Goalscorer bet scores First and then scores a Second, Betfred DOUBLE the odds.

If they score a Third, Betfred TREBLE the odds.)

CRYSTAL PALACE v ASTON VILLA

16.00 in England

Apart from Man City and Arsenal who have won 5 from 5, Crystal Palace are 3rd in the Form Table from the last 5 fixtures, gaining 4 victories and a draw from those 5.

Added to that, it’s actually 5 victories from 6 meaning a points tally of 16 from a possible 18.

The latest victory came against Wolves at Molineux on Saturday with the Eagles inflicting a defeat on the Gold and Blacks by a 3-1 away day score, as predicted in this EveryTip column last week.

Michael Olise and Jean-Philippe Mateta scored in the 1st-half to give Palace a lead at the break.

Wolves pulled a goal back midway through the 2nd-half before Eberechi Eze added a 3rd for the away team to give Oliver’s Army the points and continue the great run under Mr Glasner’s guidance.

Palace’s Naouirou Ahamada, who was introduced as a substitute in the 15th minute, due to an injury to Will Hughes, was shown 2 quick fire Yellow Cards in the 82nd and 85th minute that resulted in a Red which allowed NA to beat his mates to the post-match drinks.

Added to that Naouirou gets the chance to go on his Summer Holidays early as the lad won’t be included today.

‘Where’s that Suncream?’

Crystal Palace sit in 12th place with the same 46 points as Wolves but with a better goal difference.

Both with 1 fixture remaining.

Brighton (10th) and Bournemouth (11th) have 48 points.

Neither Palace nor Wolves can get any higher than 10th but as mentioned above, each place is worth £3 Million more than the one below so Crystal Palace will want to round off the campaign with another victory to at least stay in 12th place.

The challenge now for the Eagles is to try and keep hold of Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze, who, when both are fit and both start for Palace, can cause problems to anyone.

It’s rumoured that Manchester United are sniffing around Michael, however, whoever decides to sign the Striker, providing that Crystal Palace are willing to sell, should go in for both Mr Olise and Mr Eze and take them as a pair.

Aston Villa edged closer to confirming their 4th-place finish on Monday Night Football, gaining a point from a draw by a 3-3 score, against Liverpool at Villa Park.

A disastrous error by Emiliano Martinez who fumbled a cross into the net led to Villa conceding the Liverpool opening goal after just a minute was on the clock.

Youri Tielemans equalised for Villa 10 minutes later before Liverpool scored a 2nd to give the away team a lead at the break.

Liverpool then added a 3rd just after the restart.

Unai Emery introduced Jhon Duran in the 79th minute, which turned out to be an inspired substitution, with the No-No-Notorious Mr Duran scoring twice (Duran Duran) to make the scores level and with no further goals, Aston Villa snatched a draw from the jaws of defeat.

A win would have confirmed the 4th-place finish, with Villa having 68 points with 1 game remaining.

At that point, Tottenham had 63 points with 2 games to play, so could, in theory, have gained a total of 69 points.

That scenario ended on Wednesday when Tottenham suffered a defeat against Man City to confirm Aston Villa’s 4th-place finish and a Champions League spot.

Villa were 16th in the Premier League Table when Unai Emery took over in 2022.

This is a great return for the Spaniard and the Villains should be proud of their achievement and look forward to a Champions League adventure next season.

Aston Villa gained the victory over Crystal Palace at Villa Park back in September.

After a goalless 1st-half, a goal from the Wild Boy Jhon Duran, a Douglas Luiz converted penalty and a Leon Bailey strike gave Villa the win by a 3-1 scoreline.

Odsonne Edouard had scored first, just after the restart, to give Roy Hodgson’s Eagles a lead after the break.

Betfred offer Crystal Palace at Evens 1/1, the draw at 11/4 and 2/1 for Aston Villa to come away with all 3-points.

Betfred offer 9/2 that Jean-Philippe Mateta Scores First and 6/4 that Ollie Watkins Scores Anytime.

(If your pre-match First Goalscorer bet scores First and then scores a Second, Betfred DOUBLE the odds.

If they score a Third, Betfred TREBLE the odds.)

LIVERPOOL v WOLVES

16.00 in England

Jurgen Klopp’s final game in charge of Liverpool and fittingly the fixture is at home in front of the Anfield faithful who will no doubt give their enigmatic Manager a good send-off.

Liverpool gained a point from a draw by a 3-3 score, against Aston Villa on Monday Night Football.

In a very entertaining game that started bizarrely and continued in that form throughout the 90 minutes, Liverpool took the lead after just one minute, when a speculative cross from Harvey Elliott was somehow bungled into the back of the net by the Villa Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

Hands like John Newsome’s.

Villa quickly equalised before Coady Gakpo scored to re-establish the lead.

Jarell Quansah added a 3rd for Liverpool early in the 2nd-half and with time nearly up, it looked like Jurgen Klopp would gain a victory in Klipperty’s penultimate game in charge.

Not so, as Aston Villa scored twice late on to gain a draw from the brilliant game.

Liverpool sit in 3rd place with 79 points, which is where Jurgen will end his time at Anfield, as regardless of the result today, Liverpool can’t get any higher but can’t be overhauled either.

There’s been a lot of conjecture as to whether Jurgen Klopp’s time at Anfield has been a great achievement.

Compared to Pep Guardiola’s time at the Etihad, which is roughly over the same period, then some can say, no, it’s not been great.

However, in Jurgen’s tenure, Liverpool have won their first Premier League Title, the Champions League, 1 x FA Cup, 2 x Carabao Cups, 1 x FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Super Cup, as well as suffering defeats in another 2 Champions League Finals.

The ones out there who have a glass half-full will say that Mr Klopp’s time on Merseyside has been simply sensational.

The ones whose glass is half-empty could argue that Jurgen has possibly underachieved, considering the German is supposed to be an elite Football Manager.

That’s a debate for others to ponder over a pint in the boozer, however, the Anfield Rappers will hope that Liverpool don’t decline over the next few years, in the same way as Manchester United have when Sir Alex Ferguson left and the period that Arsenal endured for a while, following Arsene Wenger’s departure.

The Liverpool hierarchy need to get the next Manager appointment right.

All the best for the future Mr Klopp.

Wolves suffered a defeat against Crystal Palace at Molineux on Saturday with the away team getting the win by a 3-1 scoreline, as predicted in this EveryTip column last week.

Matheus Cunha did score for Wolves, midway through the 2nd-half but Gary O’Neil’s boys were trailing 2-0 at that point and then conceded a 3rd after Matheus’ goal to ultimately suffer the loss.

That leaves Wolves in 13th place with the same 46 points as Crystal Palace but a place below due to an inferior goal difference.

Wolves can’t get any higher than 10th but can drop as low as 14th, if a defeat occurs today against Liverpool, added to a victory for Fulham against Luton.

Fourteenth is a good return, considering the start that Gary O’Neil had in his tenure at Molineux when Julen Lopetegui decided to leave Wolves, just before the start of the campaign, giving Gary limited preparation for the season.

Cheers Julen!

After being sorned off on several occasions by the Stockley Park Crew this season, Wolves have tabled a proposal to abolish the dreaded VAR, which will go to a vote between the 20 Premier League clubs.

There as to be at least 14 clubs vote in the same way of getting rid to stand a chance of it happening.

However, even if all 20 vote the same way as Wolves, to get rid of the Video Assistant Referee, that doesn’t mean it will go.

John Newsome does think that it should go and can point to watching football in the leagues below the Top Flight who don’t have the dreaded.

The spectacle is a lot better, if a goal goes in, after a quick look over to the Linesman (it is Linesman or Lineswoman, not Assistant Referee) to check whether he/she has put the flag up, that’s that, no waiting around for the Stockley Clowns to check whether it’s an armpit hair offside.

The problem is though, there is too much money invested in the project, too many Jobs For The Boys (or Girls), so in reality, whatever the vote count comes back as, it’s more than likely that the dreaded is here to stay.

Fair play to Wolves though for at least having a go, one might just buy a Gold and Black jersey to show some support.

Hi-Ho Wolverhampton!

Respect Jeff Beck.

Hwang-Hee Chan scored the opener for Wolves to give the home team the lead at the break, when these two teams met at Molineux.

Second-half goals from Coady Gakpo, Andy Robertson and a Hugo Bueno own-goal gave Liverpool the away day victory by a 3-1 scoreline.

Betfred offer Liverpool at Odds On 1/7, the draw at 11/2 and 12/1 for Wolves to come away with all 3-points.

Betfred offer 3/1 that Mo Salah Scores First and 23/20 that Liverpool Win To Nil.

(If your pre-match First Goalscorer bet scores First and then scores a Second, Betfred DOUBLE the odds.

If they score a Third, Betfred TREBLE the odds.)

LUTON v FULHAM

16.00 in England

Whilst Luton’s fate has not been officially confirmed, the defeat against West Ham on Saturday by a 3-1 scoreline, as predicted in this EveryTip column last week, leaves the Hatters on the brink of relegation.

Albert Sambi-Lokonga scored the opener for Luton against West Ham at the London Stadium, to give the away team the lead at the interval.

Unfortunately for the travelling Hatters, their idols conceded 3 goals in the 2nd-half to ultimately suffer the loss.

Luton sit in the final relegation place with 26 points, 3 adrift of the safe team Nottingham Forest, both with 1 game remaining.

Whilst it’s not over until the Fat Lady sings (bit harsh), the said Rotund one is beginning to warble as even if Luton gain a victory today against Fulham, married with a defeat for Nottingham Forest against Burnley, the goal difference is currently minus-31, with Forest having minus-19, meaning Rob’s boys would have to score 6 and see Nuno’s men concede 6.

Other score-lines, where the 12-goal swing is overturned are available, however, in truth, it’s not going to happen and Luton’s one-year stay in the Promised Land is over.

It would be quite funny if come 17.30 on Sunday, Luton are 11-0 in front and the game between Burnley and Forest is goalless, making it a nervy final few minutes.

Although funny, it’s not going to happen.

The 3 teams that were promoted last season, Burnley, Sheffield United and Luton will be relegated which as mentioned, has only happened once since the inception of the Premier League in 1992/93.

Bolton, Crystal Palace and Barnsley were all promoted from the Championship in 1996/97 and all relegated the following year.

Bolton and Crystal Palace have at various times, been promoted back to the Premier League, however, Barnsley, like Luton, who were in the Premier League for the first time, have never been promoted since.

Luton will be hoping they don’t match that record and can come back pretty soon.

There are quite a lot of Hatters players who have graced the hallowed Oakwell Turf.

All the best to Carlton Morris, Cauley Woodrow, Jordan Clark, Luke Berry, Mads Andersen, Jacob Brown and Rob Edwards.

Fulham suffered the expected defeat against Man City on Saturday and in truth, never really troubled the Champions Elect.

It is possible that, metaphorically speaking, the players had one foot in the flip-flop and the other dipping their toe into the pool.

Bernd Leno, Fulham’s German Goalkeeper, was seen putting his towel out in the 6-yard box, 2 hours before the kick-off.

Man City scored 1 in the 1st-half and 3 after the break, to gain the away day victory at Craven Cottage by a 4-0 scoreline.

The final goal came as a result of Issa Diop bringing down Julian Alvarez in the area which not only resulted in a penalty to City but a 2nd Yellow Card and the subsequent Red for Issa who got the chance to put the kettle on for his mates, as well as giving the lad the day off today.

The defeat leaves Fulham in 14th place with 44 points, 4 ahead of Everton, meaning, whatever the result is today, Marco Silva’s Cottagers won’t finish any lower and depending on results for Wolves
and Crystal Palace, who currently have 46 points, it could be argued, won’t finish any higher.

After a goalless 60 minutes, Marco Silva introduced Carlos Vinicius on the hour mark when these two met at Craven Cottage in September.

Carlos didn’t disappoint, scoring the only goal of the game, a couple of minutes after coming on, to give Fulham the victory over Luton by a 1-0 score.

Betfred offer Luton at 13/8, the draw at 5/2 and 5/4 for Fulham to come away with all 3-points.

Betfred offer 6/1 that Carlton Morris Scores First and 6/5 that there are Over 3.5 Goals.

(If your pre-match First Goalscorer bet scores First and then scores a Second, Betfred DOUBLE the odds.

If they score a Third, Betfred TREBLE the odds.)

MAN CITY v WEST HAM

16.00 in England

Man City gained an easy victory against Fulham at Craven Cottage in the early Saturday Afternoon kick-off.

Josko Gvardiol scored the opener to give City a lead at the break before Phil Foden added a 2nd just before the hour mark.

Josko then scored his 2nd and City’s 3rd.

On the stroke of full-time and just as the referee was about to blow up, Julian Alvarez was brought down in the area which resulted in a penalty.

Mr Gvardiol was asked if he would like to take the spot-kick to gain a hat-trick, however, as goal difference could become a defining factor in deciding the Title, JG declined the offer and made the better decision to let Julian take it.

Julian didn’t disappoint and scored to make it 4.

That put Man City at the summit of the Premier League, at least for 24 hours or so, with 85 points from 36 games played.

It was then up to Arsenal to get the victory over Manchester United on Sunday.

After seeing United’s starting eleven, there wasn’t much danger of Arsenal losing, with Mikel’s Young Guns licking their lips at the prospect of facing a team that had Casermiro at Centre-Half.

The inevitable victory for Arsenal occurred meaning City dropped back to 2nd place before the midweek fixture.

Man City had an extra game to complete which took place on Tuesday against Tottenham at the Chas and Dave Memorial Stadium.

After a cagey goalless 1st-half, City came out stronger at the start of the 2nd, which immediately produced a goal with Erling Haaland tapping home a Kevin De Bruyne pass.

Tottenham did have a couple of chances to equalise but after Jeremy Doku was brought down in the area, the referee had no choice but to award a penalty, Erling scored his and City’s 2nd to seal the victory by a 2-0 scoreline, lifting Pep’s High Flying Blues to the summit of the Premier League with 1 game remaining.

Man City just need to win today, or at least, match what Arsenal’s result is, to gain an 8th Premier League Title and the 4th in succession, which 4 in a Row has never been done before.

A draw could be good enough, depending on how Mikel’s Young Guns fare against the Toffees, however, it’s more than likely that Pep Guardiola will take it for granted that Arsenal will get the victory over Everton, so will go all out to get the 3 points needed.

Blue Moon!

This is David Moyes’ final fixture in charge of West Ham and although a lot of the Bubbles had become disgruntled with the Scot, David should be afforded a tremendous amount of respect for his time at the London Stadium, which produced a Europa Conference League victory and the first Trophy for the Hammers in 43 years.

Despite announcing that David is leaving, the West Ham players did not take their foot off the gas against Luton at the London Stadium on Saturday.

After conceding a Luton goal to trail at the interval, James Ward-Prowse, Tomas Soucek and a youngster called George Earthy scored in the 2nd-half to give West Ham the victory by a 3-1 scoreline.

That leaves the Hammers in 9th place with 52 points from 37 games completed.

There’s no chance of a European place, with 8th being the highest possible finish that West Ham can achieve and 10th being the lowest, depending on the results of those around the Hammers on Sunday.

So a mid-table finish in David Moyes’ final season in charge, isn’t too shabby for West Ham and the Big Scot, who will no doubt be at a club near you sometime soon.

All the best for the future Mr Moyes.

Man City gained the victory over West Ham by a 3-1 scoreline at the London Stadium back in September.

James Ward-Prowse scored the opener for the Hammers to give the home team a lead at the break.

Pep then got into his boys in the dressing room, who came out in the 2nd-half and scored 3 times.

Jeremy Doku, Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland with the City goals.

Betfred offer Man City at Odds On 1/14, the draw at 15/2 and 16/1 for West Ham to come away with all 3-points.

Betfred offer 2/1 that Erling Haaland Scores First and 6/5 that there are Over 4.5 Goals.

(If your pre-match First Goalscorer bet scores First and then scores a Second, Betfred DOUBLE the odds.

If they score a Third, Betfred TREBLE the odds.)

SHEFFIELD UNITED v TOTTENHAM

16.00 in England

Sheffield United suffered another defeat on (insert day) Saturday, this time against (insert opponents) Everton at (insert venue) Goodison Park.

A single Toffees goal, scored in the 1st-half, did the damage to give Everton the victory by a 1-0 score.

The Blades remain at the foot of the Premier League Table with 16 points from 37 games played and have now conceded 101 goals, with 1 fixture remaining.

Sheffield United had a few connections with Barnsley FC at the start of the 2023/24 Campaign, one being the Gaffer Paul Heckinbottom and the others being the excellent Ollie McBurnie who Paul, when Manager of Barnsley, brought Ollie to the club, Adam Davies and Mason Holgate.

Ollie was voted the Player of the Year at Oakwell back in 2018, even though the lad only came in January of that year and played just 17 games on loan from Swansea.

Paul ‘By-Heck’ Heckinbottom, didn’t last long in the Premier League with Sheffield United and was sacked in December 2023.

All the best Paul Heckinbottom, Ollie McBurnie, Adam Davies and Mason Holgate.

John Newsome just wants to put a thank you out there to James from Swinton, nowhere near Bramall Lane.

The guy is a living legend and a true friend to John.

Unfortunately, his beloved Blades are relegated but they will be back, hopefully in the not-too-distant future.

Little Jimbo is often the outlet to a Blunt joke or three but it really is done as a bit of fun to lighten up the ever-increasing darkness of this World and to prove that one can take the rise out of another person, whilst not intending to harm.

James never takes it personally and loves his weekly mention, it’s just a real shame that this EveryTip column won’t be able to include the Little Blunt next season.

Hopefully, Jim and the Blades will be back soon.

To add to that, the Boy might be married then, to the lovely Jade.

Haribo are looking forward to seeing their ring on a finger, fourth from the right of the left hand, sometime soon.

Make it happen JK.

All the best Jade and Jimbo for the upcoming birth (Baby Chrissy?)

Up the Blunts!

Tottenham came from a goal down against Burnley on Saturday to gain a home victory by a 2-1 score.

Pedro Porro equalised for Spurs to take both teams in level at the break.

It was then left to another Defender, Micky Van De Ven, to score the winner late in the game, to not only gain the points and stop the losing streak but confirm Burnley’s relegation back to the Championship.

That left Tottenham in 5th place with 63 points from 36 games completed, 4 points adrift of Aston Villa in 4th but with a game in hand.

However, that extra game was against Man City where Tottenham suffered a defeat on Tuesday, meaning the Champions League dream is over.

To be fair, Tottenham did put up a fight against City and had clear chances to score but ultimately lost the game by a 2-0 scoreline.

The 5th-8th places look like the following going into the final round on Sunday,

5th- Tottenham- played 37, points 63, scored 71 and conceded 61 (plus+ 10)

6th- Chelsea- played 37, points 60, scored 75 and conceded 62 (plus+ 13)

7th- Newcastle- played 37, points 57 scored 81 and conceded 60 (plus+ 21)

8th- Manchester United- played 37, points 57, scored 55 and conceded 58 (minus- 3)

If one remembers, the game at the Chas and Dave Memorial Stadium in September saw a Gustavo Hamer goal, midway through the 2nd-half, give Paul Heckinbottom’s Blades the lead going into added time.

The on-field referee Peter Bankes advised that there should be an additional 12 minutes of play, which didn’t go down well with the travelling Blunts.

Richarlison scored the equaliser in the 98th minute with Dejan Kulusevski getting the winner 2 minutes later to give Tottenham the victory over Sheffield United by a 2-1 score.

The Blades Ollie McBurnie was shown a 2nd-Yellow Card and the subsequent Red after Dejan’s goal to beat his mates into the Showers.

This was probably the game when the chant,

‘Premier League, corrupt as!’ was first introduced, with the Blunts, including Little Jimbo, not happy with the officials.

In the end, there were an additional 16 minutes added to the 2nd-half, along with 4 from the 1st, to give an extra 20 minutes of excitement.

What more does one want?

Betfred offer Sheffield United at 6/1, the draw at 9/2 and Odds On 2/7 for Tottenham to come away with all 3-points.

Betfred offer 7/1 that Ben Brereton-Diaz Scores First and Odds On 8/15 that Tottenham Score in Both Halves.

(If your pre-match First Goalscorer bet scores First and then scores a Second, Betfred DOUBLE the odds.

If they score a Third, Betfred TRELE the odds.)

The fun in the Scottish Premier League is about to come to an end with (shock news) Celtic being crowned as the 2023/24 Pub League Champions.

There is 1 game remaining, following the 2 latest fixtures, where Celtic gained the Glasgow bragging rights over Rangers on Saturday, getting a victory by a 2-1 scoreline, in the Old Firm Derby, then inflicting a defeat over Kilmarnock on Wednesday, to seal the Title.

Rangers played on Tuesday against Dundee, also gaining the expected victory to leave the gap of 6 points with 1 game remaining, meaning it is the Green and White side of Glasgow that are the Champions.

Celtic- played 37, points 90 scored 92 and conceded 28 (plus+ 64)

Rangers- played 37, points 84, scored 84 and conceded 29 (plus+ 55)

Both now have the following remaining games that take place on Saturday-

Celtic v St Mirren (who?)

Hearts (who?) v Rangers

The loveable OzScot went missing over the weekend, following the Old Firm Derby defeat for his beloved Teddy Bears, reappearing on the Roundabout in the local Melbourne Park, sat spinning around with several discarded cans of Tennents Extra and remnants of Deep Fried Mars Bars, dressed in the Mel Gibson regalia, mumbling,

‘You’ll never take out freedom!’

And singing the brilliant Killers tune,

Mr Brightside.

‘Let me go!

I just can’t look, it’s killing me,

They’re taking control,

I’m jealous me,

Turning ‘Gers into the sea,

Always finishing in 2nd-place,

Choking every season,

But it’s just the price I pay,

Destiny is calling me,

Open up my bleary eyes,

The Pub Leagues went to t’Green and White side!’

Never mind Braveheart, there’s always next season.

To make matters worse, Kylie’a local team Lost Again FC, did in fact Lose Again.

‘He’s Celtic, United but Brendan has decided that the Pub League is the best place to be!’

That’s another season over, gone in the blink of an eye, which more than likely, will see Man City as the 2023/24 Premier League Champions.

Added to that, City should get their hands on the FA Cup, meaning a back-to-back Double, which is a rarity in itself.

In the history of the Premier League, there have only been 4 Teams, on 8 occasions that have done the Double, which is winning the Title and the FA Cup in the same campaign.

On 2 occasions, the remarkable feat of the Treble has been achieved.

1993/94 Manchester United
1995/96 Manchester United
1997/98 Arsenal
1998/99 Manchester United **
2001/02 Arsenal
2009/10 Chelsea
2018/19 Man City
2022/23 Man City **

** Denotes the Treble, which is the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League.

Whilst this final column of the season will be published before the FA Cup Final, it would be an upset if Manchester United win the Cup, however, not out of the question.

EveryTip and John Newsome want to say thank you for taking the time to read and share this column and hope that continues in August at the start of the 2024/25 campaign.

There might just be a few England (and Scotland) write-ups focusing on the Three Lions (and the Scots) exploits in the upcoming Euro’24s in Germany, so keep checking in on EveryTip to see those columns.

All the best

John Newsome
