Round 1
There is now a revamped version of an existing Competition for lovers of the Beautiful Game, kicking off in the United States of America on the 15th of June 2025.
The World Club Cup or the Club World Cup, call it what you wish, sees 32 teams from across the Globe compete to be crowned the Champions of the World.
One would like to say the teams are the Top 32 in the World but that simply isn’t the case.
The origin of each team’s inclusion in this year’s competition will be explained below.
For those thinking,
‘Brilliant, we will get to see Liverpool and Barcelona in action!’
Then one will be disappointed as Liverpool and Barcelona, the current Premier League and La Liga Champions are not in the competition.
Inter Miami, who just happen to have a certain Lionel Messi in their squad, are taking part.
Make of that what you will.
This EveryTip column will offer up the format and fixtures for the competition plus the predictions for each game so please enjoy and hopefully make a few quid with a bet here and there.
June 15th
AL AHLY v INTER MIAMI
Hard Rock Stadium, Miami
01.00 in England
Channel 5 and DAZN
The Egyptian club Al Ahly head to America and are included in this competition as winners of the 2023/24 CAF Champions League, which is the Confederation of Africa Cup, being similar to Europe’s Champions League.
If one is wondering why Pyramids (who are the current CAF Champions) are not the preferred team, it’s because Al Ahly have won that particular competition the most times so are included for this inaugural tournament.
The US got an extra slot as tournament hosts.
Inter Miami are included under the ‘Host Nation’ disguise but basically are in the FIFA Club World Cup because a certain Lionel Messi is in the squad.
Lionel’s old mates Sergio Busquets and Luis Suarez are Inter Miami players all looking to be picked for this opener by another old buddy, him being the ex-West Ham (yes!), Liverpool and Barcelona player Javier Mascherano.
There will be a lot of derision about the Club World Cup, however, most football fans, including John Newsome, will be watching, to ease the boredom of the Premier League close season.
Betfred offer Al Ahly at 9/4, the Draw at 13/5 and 23/20 for Inter Miami to come away with all 3-points.
Inter Miami Win 1-2- Get 15/2 on Betfred & Claim your new account welcome offer!
BAYERN MUNICH v AUCKLAND CITY
TQL Stadium, Cincinnati
17.00 in England
Channel 5 and DAZN
Bayern Munich enter the CWC (Club World Cup) as UEFA’s best-ranked eligible team in the 4 year rankings.
How that is worked out is anyone’s guess.
Whilst it’s been over 5 years since Bayern won the Champions League, no other German team has won the competition since Borussia Dortmund in 1997, so Bayern Munich are apparently in on merit.
At least Harry Kane will be on show, who is always worth a punt as the First or Anytime Goal scorer.
Auckland City, are the Oceania entrant, based on New Zealand’s best OFC Champions League winners in the Oceania Football Confederation 4-year ranking.
If one looks at the Odds below, Bayern are huge favourites, however, at 66/1, it’s worth a pound or equivalent of whatever currency on offer, to be placed on Auckland, just in case Vincent Kompany’s men have a bad day.
Betfred offer Bayern Munich at 1/200, the Draw at 33/1 and 66/1 for Auckland to come away with all 3-points.
Bayern Munich Win 5-0- Get 5/1 on Betfred & Claim your new account welcome offer!
PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN v ATLETICO MADRID
Rose Bowl, Pasadena
20.00 in England
DAZN
The current Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain head to America not because of the latest win, as their entry to the competition was already announced but because PSG are 2nd, behind Bayern Munich in the Top 12 of all European Teams.
Let’s try and explain the selection process for the 12 European Teams.
The selection criteria was based on results for the period between 2021 to 2024.
1-Chelsea (England) – 2021 Champions League winners.
2-Real Madrid (Spain) – 2022 and 2024 Champions League winners.
3-Manchester City (England) – 2023 Champions League winners.
4-Bayern Munich (Germany) – Best non-Champions League winners.
5-Paris St-Germain (France) – Second-best non-Champions League winners.
6-Borussia Dortmund (Germany) – Third best non-Champions League winners.
7-Inter Milan (Italy) – Fourth best non-Champions League winners.
8-Porto (Portugal) – Fifth best non-Champions League winners*
9-Atletico Madrid (Spain) – Sixth best non-Champions League winners*
10-Benfica (Portugal) – Seventh best non-Champions League winners*
11-Juventus (Italy) – Eighth best non-Champions League winners*
12-Red Bull Salzburg (Austria) – Ninth best non-Champions League winners*
*Denotes where other teams finished higher but were ineligible to qualify.
Some will ask,
Why aren’t Liverpool involved?
Basically, although Liverpool are England’s most successful European/Champions League winners, Liverpool didn’t win the competition between 2021-2024.
Of the teams not to win the Champions League between 2021 and 2024, Liverpool were the Fifth-best performing team across Europe.
RB Salzburg, the 15th-best team not to win the Champions League, were the lowest-ranked side to be granted a spot in the Club World Cup.
Liverpool, RB Leipzig, Barcelona, Napoli, Sevilla and AC Milan all finished higher than Salzburg, but all come from countries where two sides had already qualified.
As shown, Atletico Madrid are 6th on the list and come in ahead of Barcelona who finished below basically due to poor performances in the Champions League over the qualifying period of 2021-2024, including the early exits in the 2021/22 and 2022/23 campaigns.
As with Liverpool, winning the Premier League and La Liga came too late for this year’s CWC.
Betfred offer Paris Saint Germain at slight Odds On 9/10, the Draw at 13/5 and 3/1
for Atletico Madrid to come away with all 3-points.
Paris Saint-Germain Win 3-0- Get 16/1 on Betfred & Claim your new account welcome offer!
PALMEIRAS v FC PORTO
MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, New Jersey
23.00 in England
DAZN
Palmeiras qualify for this revamped tournament as the winners of the 2021 Copa Libertadores, which is CONMEBOL’s (South American Football Confederation) equivalent of UEFA’s Champions League.
The Bubbles faithful may be interested to know that one of West Ham’s former players Felipe Anderson, should be on show for the Porcos.
Portugal’s entrants include FC Porto, who are the Fifth-best ranked non-Champions League Winners over the 4-year UEFA Rankings and Benfica who are Seventh on the list.
Betfred offer Palmeiras at 9/5, the Draw at 11/5 and 8/5 for FC Porto to come away with all 3-points.
FC Porto Win 1-2- Get 9/1 on Betfred & Claim your new account welcome offer!
June 16th
BOTAFOGO v SEATTLE SOUNDERS
Lumen Field, Seattle
03.00 in England
DAZN
Botafogo are from Brazil and enter the tournament as the winners of the 2024 Copa Libertadores.
Unlike the European entries, which can only offer up 2 teams from the same country, Brazil have 4 clubs competing to be the Champions of the World.
The ex-Manchester United Defender Alex Telles will be on show for the Black and Whites whose strip resembles the Newcastle shirts and shorts.
The word Bota in Portuguese means Boot and Fogo is Fire.
The good folk of Wolverhampton may want to tune in to the Boot of Fire’s fixtures, with the old boy Marcal in the Botafogo squad.
Seattle Sounders are one of the three teams from the USA, competing as the winners of the 2022 Concacaf Champions League.
As a football fan of many years, John Newsome remembers the Seattle Sounders from watching Saint and Greavsie back in the 1980s, who often featured the North American Soccer League (NASL) which eventually turned into the Major League Soccer (MLS).
Two of England’s 1966 World Cup Winners, Sir Geoff Hurst and Bobby Moore had a few runouts for the Sounders back in the late 1970s.
Surprisingly, the current Seattle Sounders have an ex-Barnsley FC player who will be on show in this particular tournament, him being Ryan Kent.
The Loveable YankScot is in situ over in Seattle and will be attending some of the Club World Cup games with the Son in tow, so this EveryTip column will have a reporter covering a match or two.
One says reporter, the YankScot will be more interested in the Foot Long Hot Dogs and Sparkling Aqua on offer in the stadiums.
Betfred offer Botafogo FC at slight Odds On 5/6, the Draw at 5/2 and 7/2 for Seattle Sounders to come away with all 3-points.
Botafogo FC Win 2-0- Get 8/1 on Betfred & Claim your new account welcome offer!
CHELSEA v LOS ANGELES FC
Mercedes Benz Stadium, Atlanta
20.00 in England
Channel 5 and DAZN
As one can see, the streaming service DAZN have the rights to every game of the Club World Cup, however, Channel 5 in the United Kingdom has secured limited rights to broadcast some of the games, including Chelsea’s opener against Los Angeles FC.
Enzo Maresca has chosen 28 players to travel to America, however, 35 was possible but Enzo opted to reduce the number to 28 to keep a ‘happy group’ as Mr Maresca puts it.
Chelsea are eligible to compete due to winning the Champions League in 2020/21.
There are a few new signings in the squad, including Liam Delap, Dario Essugo, Mike Penders and Mamadou Sarr.
There was a bizarre Transfer Window that opened on June 1st and closed on June 10th to allow teams to sign players that could compete in the CWC.
The real Summer Transfer Window opens again on June 16th, begging the question, why close for 6 days only?
Well, the answer is this.
FIFA only allow a combined maximum of 16 weeks for the Transfer Windows in any one Calendar year, therefore there had to be a 6-day closure to comply with the rules.
Los Angeles FC won a Play-Off match against Club America to earn a place in the Club World Cup.
The one-off game was played after the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld FIFA’s decision to expel the Mexican side Club Leon from the new tournament.
FIFA determined in March that Club Leon did not meet tournament regulations on multi-club ownership.
They had qualified for the Club World Cup after beating LAFC in the 2023 Concacaf Champions League final, while Club America were the highest-ranked team behind Club Leon in confederation ranking who did not qualify for the competition.
There is a bit of unrest over in Los Angeles at the moment, so maybe the Soccer Team can, in some way, ease the disturbances and distract the rioters for a week or two.
There are a few familiar faces in the LA squad, those being the ex-Tottenham Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and his French teammate, Olivier Giroud.
One who is trying to prevent the goals and one trying to score a few.
Betfred offer Chelsea at Odds On 1/3, the Draw at 9/2 and 8/1 for Los Angeles FC to come away with all 3-points.
Chelsea Win 3-0- Get 15/2 on Betfred & Claim your new account welcome offer!
BOCA JUNIORS v BENFICA
Hard Rock Stadium, Miami
23.00 in England
Channel 5 and DAZN
Argentina’s Boca Juniors are selected as the 2nd best ranked eligible team in the CONMEBOL 4-year ranking.
The legend that is Edinson Cavani is part of the squad, so if nothing else, it will be good to see the Uruguayan, now aged 38, for one last hurrah on the Big Football Stage.
Boca do have another legend that will no doubt be looking down (or up!) on proceedings, him being Diego Armando Maradona.
The Wolves faithful will remember Bruno Lage who is the Manager of Benfica, the 2nd team from Portugal.
Bruno’s Benfica Lage Louts head to America as the Seventh-best ranked eligible team in the 4-year UEFA Rankings.
The ex-Manchester United Forward Angel Di Maria and the ex-Man City Defender Nicolas Otamendi are part of the squad, as well as the ex-Swansea Star (yes Swansea!) Renato Sanches.
Betfred offer Boca Juniors at 18/5, the Draw at 13/5 and slight Odds On 4/5 for Benfica to come away with all 3-points.
Benfica Win 1-2- Get 7/1 on Betfred & Claim your new account welcome offer!
June 17th
FLAMENGO v ESPERANCE DE TUNIS
Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia
02.00 in England
DAZN
Flamengo are the 2nd of 4 teams from Brazil, that are taking part in the Club World Cup due to winning the 2022 Copa Libertadores.
Danilo, who had a few games for Man City back in 2017/18, will be on show in America wearing the Flamengo Jersey.
The Brazilians do have a youngster with the brilliant name of Jonny Goes, however, Young Jonny is only 18 and despite being called Goes, probably won’t Go to America, so the lad’s middle name could well be Doesn’t.
The Manager is the ex-Chelsea and a number of other clubs’ Left-Back Filipe Luis.
Espérance De Tunis, as the name implies, are from Tunisia and are selected for this tournament as the best-ranked eligible team in the CAF (Confederation of African Football) 4-year ranking.
Whilst Esperance means ‘hope’ or ‘expectations’, Espérance De Tunis have 2 hopes of progressing out of this group,
Bob Hope and No Hope!
Betfred offer Flamengo at Odds On 3/10, the Draw at 9/2 and 10/1 for Espérance De Tunis to come away with all 3-points.
Flamengo Win 3-0- Get 7/1 on Betfred & Claim your new account welcome offer!
FLUMINENSE v BORUSSIA DORTMUND
MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, New Jersey
17.00 in England
Channel 5 and DAZN
Team 3 of 4 from Brazil are Fluminense, who qualify for the CWC as winners of the 2023 Copa Libertadores.
The legend and ex-Chelsea plus a few other clubs Defender Thiago Silva, who has just turned 40 years of age, is still going strong and will be on show for this opening game against Dortmund.
Germany’s 2nd representative is Borussia Dortmund, who are selected as the Third-best ranked eligible team in UEFA’s 4-year rankings.
Dortmund have a young English star in their squad, him being Jamie Gittens.
However, it’s unclear as to whether Jamie will feature in this tournament as the Dortmund Manager Nico Kovac apparently isn’t a fan and there are talks that Chelsea are in for the 20-year-old Striker, who started his career at Man City but has had dalliances with Chelsea previously.
One player that will feature is a certain J Bellingham.
No, not Jude but the lad’s younger brother, Jobe who followed in Jude’s footsteps and joined Dortmund after helping Sunderland gain promotion to the Premier League.
Betfred offer Fluminense at 9/2, the Draw at 16/5 and Odds On 4/7 for Borussia Dortmund to come away with all 3-points.
Borussia Dortmund Win 0-3- Get 10/1 on Betfred & Claim your new account welcome offer!
RIVER PLATE v URAWA RED DIAMONDS
Lumen Field, Seattle
DAZN
20.00 in England
Argentina’s 2nd representatives are River Plate, who head to America as the best ranked eligible team in the CONMEBOL 4-year ranking.
River Plate are the most successful team from Argentina and have an elegant strip featuring a Red Sash, akin to the old Southampton Jersey from the 2010/11 season, although River’s Sash goes down the opposite direction to that of the Saints.
Urawa Red Diamonds are from Japan and qualify for this competition as winners of the 2022 AFC Champions League.
‘You-Rawa Reds’ will certainly have the backing of the Barnsley FC faithful whose mantra is always ‘You Reds!’
Betfred offer River Plate at Odds On 4/7, the Draw at 3/1 and 5/1 for Urawa Reds to come away with all 3-points.
River Plate Win 2-0- Get 6/1 on Betfred & Claim your new account welcome offer!
ULSAN HD v MAMELODI SUNDOWNS
Inter and Co Stadium, Orlando
23.00 in England
DAZN
Even the most ardent of football fans, including John Newsome, have probably not come across these two teams before.
One will hold one’s hand up at that revelation.
Ulsan HD are a South Korean football team and not a High Definition channel showing cooking programmes on the old Gogglebox.
Ulsan are the best-ranked eligible team in the AFC 4-year ranking and kick-starts their campaign against another unknown entity.
Mamelodi Sundowns are a South African team and head to America as the 2nd best ranked eligible team in the CAF 4-year rankings.
As mentioned, it’s fair to say that these two teams aren’t as easily recognised as say Man City or Real Madrid, however, both are in America and both have the opportunity to put their respective clubs on the World Footballing Map.
The only South African team that this EveryTip contributor has heard of previously is the Kaiser Chiefs, however, one doesn’t predict a riot whilst Ulsan and Mamelodi are knocking the ball around.
Betfred offer Ulsan HD at 13/8, the Draw at 11/5 and 7/4 for Mamelodi Sundowns to come away with all 3-points.
Draw 1-1- Get 5/1 on Betfred & Claim your new account welcome offer!
June 18th
MONTERREY v INTER MILAN
Rose Bowl, Pasadena
02.00 in England
DAZN
Mexico have 2 teams participating in this Club World Cup, with Monterrey being one of those, selected as winners of the 2021
Concacaf Champions League.
The legendary Real Madrid and Spain Centre-Back, Sergio Ramos is a Monterrey player and is in the squad, however, he has been injured over the last few weeks so he may miss this opener.
Inter Milan come into this tournament as the Fourth-best ranked eligible team in UEFA’s 4-year rankings having been humiliated by Paris Saint-Germain in the 2024/25 Champions League Final.
The Manager of Inter at the time, Simone Inzaghi will be in America as one of the Gaffers, however, not as the Boss of Inter, with Simone jumping ship after the CL Final and taking the Saudi Ryal, now being the Manager of Al-Hilal.
Christian Chivu will be in the Inter Milan dugout, replacing Simone on a 2-year deal.
Betfred offer Monterrey at 5/1, the Draw at 9/1 and Odds On 1/2 for Inter Milan to come away with all 3-points.
Inter Milan Win 0-2- Get 13/2 on Betfred & Claim your new account welcome offer!
MAN CITY v WYDAD
Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia
17.00 in England
Channel 5 and DAZN
Man City are one of two English teams that have been selected to compete in this revamped Club World Cup.
This is based on winning the Champions League in the 2022/23 campaign.
The Summer Transfer Window temporarily opened for 10 days, which allowed City to sign the following players.
Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Ait-Nouri, Rayan Cherki and the Goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli who have all travelled with the rest of the Citizens.
It’s now a matter of whether Pep Guardiola can get these players up to speed to see if Man City can compete with the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, Real and Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund as well as the other Premier League team, Chelsea.
Despite the new signings, the return of Rodri will be the most important factor as to whether Man City are back eating at the Top Table.
Wydad are a football team from Morocco and not something the Youths say to their Fathers when told to go to bed.
The Moroccans qualify for this tournament as winners of the 2021/22 CAF Champions League.
‘Turn that PlayStation off and get to bed!’
‘Why Dad?’
‘Because you will end up dafter than the Manchester Stick Thrower!’
Betfred offer Man City at Odds On 1/11, the Draw at 9/1 and 28/1 for Wydad to come away with all 3-points.
Man City Win 6-0- Get 20/1 on Betfred & Claim your new account welcome offer!
REAL MADRID v AL-HILAL
Hard Rock Stadium, Miami
20.00 in England
Channel 5 and DAZN
Surely Real Madrid couldn’t miss out on this particular competition, being the best team in Europe over a number of years.
The official validation of entering the tournament is because Real won the 2021/22 Champions League but it would have been a travesty if the 15-time European Champions weren’t in America.
It also offers up the opportunity to see the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr. as well as the other Galacticos, showcase their talents on the World Stage.
The legendary Manager Carlo Ancelotti, is no longer in charge of Los Blancos, leaving at the end of the recent La Liga campaign to become the first Foreign Manager of Brazil.
However, it’s fair to say that Real are in safe hands, with one of their own becoming the New Gaffer.
The ex-Liverpool and Real Madrid Midfielder Xabi Alonso has come into the Bernabeu from Bayer Leverkusen, where, although Leverkusen finished 2nd to Bayern Munich in the recent campaign, Xabi managed to stop a 12th in a row for Bayern by winning the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen in the 2023/24 season.
Real Madrid have signed Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold and although TAA was available on a Free at the end of June, Real actually paid Liverpool £10 Million to obtain the services of Trent for this Club World Cup.
No doubt, Real, under the guidance of Xabi Alonso, will be there or thereabouts come the end of this competition on the 12th of July.
As mentioned earlier, Al-Hilal now have the ex-Inter Milan Manager Simone Inzaghi as their New Gaffer.
On the plane over to America from Saudi Arabia, Simone kept waking up in hot sweats screaming,
‘Five!’
That’s either because of the wage the lad is getting paid at Al-Hilal (£500,000 a week or the 5 goals scored by PSG in the Champions League Final.
‘Five!’
Al-Hilal enter the tournament as the Saudi Arabian winners of the 2021 AFC Champions League.
Some notable players that should be on show for the Saudis are the ex-Newcastle and Fulham Striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, the ex-Man City Defender Joao Cancelo as well as the ex-Wolves Midfielder Ruben Neves and the very brief ex-Chelsea Defender Kalidou Koulibaly.
Betfred offer Real Madrid at Odds On 1/4, the Draw at 5/1 and 10/1 for Al-Hilal to come away with all 3-points.
Real Madrid Win 4-0- Get 11/1 on Betfred & Claim your new account welcome offer!
PACHUCA v SALZBURG
TQL Stadium, Cincinnati
23.00 in England
DAZN
Out of the 32 teams that are taking part in this year’s Club World Cup, Pachuca are one of probably no more than 5 teams that John Newsome hasn’t come across before.
Pachuca are the 2nd team from Mexico and enter the competition as winners of the 2024 CONCACAF Champions Cup.
CONCACAF are the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football.
Pachuca do have a player called John Kennedy.
John is a Brazilian Forward who should be on show this Summer, however, the lad stated categorically that he wasn’t going anywhere near Dallas, Texas.
RB or Red Bull Salzburg are from Austria and are in the tournament as the Ninth-best ranked eligible team in the UEFA 4-year ranking.
The iconic slogan from Red Bull is,
‘Red Bull gives you wings!’
Which is what Salzburg will need once they
are out of the Club World Cup.
Betfred offer Pachuca at 2/1, the Draw at 23/10 and 7/5 for RB Salzburg to come away with all 3-points.
Draw 2-2- Get 12/1 on Betfred & Claim your new account welcome offer!
AL-AIN v JUVENTUS
Audi Field, Washington DC
June 19th
02.00 in England
DAZN
The United Arab Emirates is represented by Al-Ain, who are the winners of the 2023/24 AFC Champions League, which basically means that this Club World Cup includes teams from all over the Globe.
Al-Ain have the ex-Wolves and Portugal Goalkeeper Rui Patricio in their squad, along with Fabio Cardoso who had a few runouts for Rangers back in 2017/18.
Maybe the Loveable YankScot remembers the lad.
A tournament wouldn’t be a credible tournament without Italy’s most successful team, them being Juventus.
The 36-time Serie A winners head to America under the guise of the Eighth-best ranked team in the UEFA 4-year rankings.
The ex-Bristol City and Bournemouth Defender Lloyd Kelly will be on show in the iconic Black and White Jersey.
The lad also turned out in another Black and White Shirt but only appeared a limited number of times for Newcastle in the 2024/25 Premier League campaign, leaving Tyneside in February 2025, to join Juventus on loan before signing a permanent contract in May for a Transfer Fee of around £18 Million.
As one can see below ‘The Old Lady’ are 9th in the betting to win the Club World Cup.
Betfred offer Al-Ain at 12/1, the Draw at 11/2 and Odds On 2/9 for Juventus to come away with all 3-points.
Juventus Win 0-3- Get 13/2 on Betfred & Claim your new account welcome offer!
