Irish Group 1 Horse Races

There are many Group 1 horse races that are held in the Republic of Ireland. Group 1 races are for top class horses and tend to have much higher purses.

In the final years of the 1960’s Duras Eile a black gelding owned and ridden by the late Major Eddie Boylan put the country on the world map for his many excellent performances in eventing throughout Ireland. Coached by Einer Schmit- Jensen to top standard in dressage , he scored 84% of the dressage marks contributing to their World Championship win at Badminton – a performance that may still be the best.

After their last brilliant victory for Ireland at Curragh, Duras Eile was sold for an amazing sum to a new owner in England. Incidentally Duras Eile was sired by Artist’s Son who also sired Quare Times a Derby Winner.
