The first Saturday of the New Year is not the most thrilling racing of the season by any means, and between now and Cheltenham it’s very much as if it’s a phoney war type situation. We will be seeing a lot of second class horses between now and then, that said there will still be some value to be found in some races. This seems to be the case on Saturday with some big prices available in the handicaps. I do enjoy these Veteran Chases and Peter Bowen’s Henllan Harri looks on a handy mark and is a nice price in the 3.00 at Sandown. The following race, the 3.35, sees the handicap debut of Monsieur Lecoq, his mark looks lenient. Over at Wincanton, in the 2.40, Jonjo O’Neill’s Tedham has been knocking on the door and deserves to get his nose in front. The next race is at 3.15 and Paul Nicholls seems to have the whip hand with favourite, Capeland, and Copain De Classe in the lineup. I will go for the latter as he has had a break and goes well fresh. These four make up my Lucky 15.
