Just two meetings on television this weekend as ITV haul their team north of the border for the Ayr Gold Cup. There is a fine card in prospect at the Scottish course this Saturday with a fine 1m handicap kicking off proceedings at 2.00 when Kynren will be trying to win a race at last this year. But I’m afraid that under top weight he will find that difficult. Richard Fahey’s Irreverent looks on handy mark but Gulf Of Poets has been kept with this race in mind by trainer Michael Easterby so I side with him. At 2.40 it’s the Silver Cup, a consolation race for horses that don’t make it into the Gold Cup. This is always a lottery to see who is going to be involved but a horse who has just failed to get into the main event and so carries top weight in this isAl Qahwa. David O’Meara’s gelding has run only once this year, that was at Thirsk in August where he finished well down the field behind several of these. He will come on for that and with some cut in the ground may well spring a surprise here Moving on to the Gold Cup itself at 3.50 I have to side with another O’Meara horse, Gulliver, his run at the Curragh last week was pretty special and if he reproduces that form could well take this. Major Jumbo won a Listed race at Chester at the beginning of August and has been running in Group races. Even with the weight he has he can run into a place at a nice price after dropping in class. Down south at Newbury they have a tricky handicap at 3.30 and John Gosden’s Forest Of Dean is a clear favourite after his four wins this season. But I go for a course and distance winner who is a big outsider and that is Exec Chef who has had an eight week break. He goes well at this time of year and he loves Newbury so I give him a good chance.
