Most people accept that cricket was first played in the 14th Century. It originates from the counties in the South-East of England and was mainly played by children.
In the old days, the ball was bowled underarm and the bat was shaped more like a hockey stick. There were just 2 stumps, rather than the 3 we see in the modern game. Runs were first known as ‘notches’ as tally sticks were used to record the scores.
We know that adults were playing the game, from the early 1600s at the latest. Records in Sidlesham show that a couple of parishioners were fined for failing to turn up to church, due to them playing a cricket match. They were fined 12d each. This took place in 1611 and in the following years there were many instances of men being fined for taking part in games on the Sabbath (Sunday). Puritans regarded this as being profane, even more so if money was being bet on the outcome of matches.
After the 1660 restoration, the 1664 Gambling Act followed which limited betting stakes to £100. This was an enormous sum at that time and it is puzzling what such legislation could have realistically achieved in terms of discouraging betting on the sport.
Cricket continued to increase in popularity and began to gain a foothold in other nations, as word of it spread through colonisation. Professional players began to emerge, although almost always from the working classes. The gentry were strictly amateur players and considered the professional game as beneath them. However, these amateurs could claim expenses and many put in claims for cash that were dishonest. Those who did this were described as ‘shamateurs’.
