Saturday Horse Racing Preview & Tips – 5th May – Ornate’s My Palace House Fancy

David Griffith’s charge can inflict pain on Aidan O’Brien, in the Palace House Stakes, reckons Seymour Biz who has picked out 4 horses for your Saturday Lucky 15 flutter.

This Saturday we have two prestigious meetings on television with the Guineas Meeting from Newmarket and the Matchbook sponsored meeting at Goodwood. There are plenty of short priced favourites on offer including Defoe and Gustav Klimt at the 2000 Guineas meeting at Newmarket so I will look at a couple of handicaps and two other Stakes races. My thoughts on the Guineas races are to give Roaring Lion another chance on Saturday and I like the look of Charlie Appleby’s Soliloquy on Sunday. However for my Lucky 15 here are my thoughts for Saturday’s TV Races.

The 1.50 at Newmarket on Saturday is the Spring Lodge Stakes Handicap with a great field for this race, Sharja Bridge from Roger Varian’s yard is the current favourite on the back of some good runs last year. He had four runs and although having only one victory was never out of the frame however this is not a race for favourites and I can see better best value in the race. Humbert is another with excellent form and will be at the sharp end along with Oasis Charm from Charlie Appleby’s yard who has won this year at Chelmsford, but the one I like here is Richard Fahey’s Third Time Lucky who won the Cambridgeshire here in 2015 has slipped down the handicap since but ran a fair race at Newbury last time doing his best work at the finish to come in sixth, he looks to have a good chance here.

At 2.20 we have the Longholes Palace House Stakes, a Group 3 contest, it sees Aidan O’Brien send over Declarationofpeace to try to take this, he had two victories last season as a two year old including over in the USA at the Breeders Cup winning the Juvenile, he will vie for favouritism with Havana Grey who has great form with four wins as a two year old. However no three year old has won this in the last ten years so I will look at those with a little more experience such as Kyllang Rock who won on his seasonal reappearance at Musselburgh or Judicial from Julie Camacho’s stable who won three times last year. But I will plump for Ornate who ran sixth in this last year and usually goes well on his seasonal reappearance, David Griffiths will have him spot on for this.

Down south to Sussex, at Goodwood at 2.05 we have the Matchbook VIP/British EBF Daisy Warwick Fillies Stakes and Sir Michael Stoute has sent Mori down for her first outing of the season. Winning twice in May last year she went to Royal Ascot and was unlucky to go down a head to Coronet, she went a bit off the boil after that but can take this on her seasonal reappearance. Ocean of Love has great form on the all weather, but What A Home trained by William Haggas can be her biggest rival, she finished last year with two good wins at Chester and Doncaster however I take Mori to land this.

The Commission Free Racing At Matchbook Handicap is at 2.40 and is a really tricky affair, however I will go with Squats. I chose this horse to win last week at Haydock but he was withdrawn due to the going, he will find it suits him better here at Goodwood and I fancy him to take this contest. He has plenty of rivals in with chances including Right Action from Richard Fahey’s stable who has two victories already this year but this is a major step up in class for him. Top weight Love Dreams won on the all weather last week at Chelmsford and was second to Mjjack previously, that was good form. Worth a mention at a bigger price is Masham Star who was third last week at Haydock despite losing a shoe during the race.
