The jumps are back! In reality, the season began last April, but the winter game is considered to get going properly with this Cheltenham Showcase meeting this week.

ITV Racing are covering five races from Prestbury Park, including four Class 2s and a Class 3. But the flat is not finished yet with a big meeting at Doncaster from where three races are being televised, including the Group 1 Futurity Stakes, a Listed race and a Class 2 handicap.

That’s not all. There are a couple of Group 3 contests from Newbury being featured as well, so ITV have 10 races to fit into their programme on Saturday afternoon, and here are my thoughts along with this week’s Lucky Fifteen.

Saturday Lucky Fifteen
1.10 Cheltenham. Spectacularsunrise
2.20 Cheltenham. Ace Of Spades
2.55 Cheltenham. Katate Dori
12.55 Doncaster. King Of Light

Beginning at Cheltenham with the first race on the card, the 1.10 William Hill Each Epic Boosts Novices Limited Handicap Chase, this is a Class 3 race run over 2m 4f. One of the fancied horses is Nigel Twiston-Davies’s Spectacularsunrise, who won twice last season then came out for his seasonal reappearance last month and won easily at Perth. His weight may be a problem here, but a bold run is expected.

Henry de Bromhead’s Rockonliam has had a fine summer over in Ireland with three victories. He looks a top-class entrant.

Martin Keighley’s De Temps En Temps won here at Cheltenham last October. His final run of last season was at Ascot in February, where he ran a close third in a Class 2 contest.

Ben Pauling’s As Legends Have It finished off last season with two victories in March at Uttoxeter and Stratford but this looks tougher.

Joe Tizzard’s young gelding Lisbane Park looks on a handy mark after finishing runner-up on his final two outings last season, but he may find a couple too good. I take Spectacularsunrise to defy his weight and defy Rockonliam.

At 2.20 it is the Pertemps Network Handicap Hurdle, a Class 2 race run over 3 miles. The top weight is Nigel Twiston-Davies’s Gowel Road, who won a Grade 2 here at Cheltenham back in January 2025. He has been highly tried since and disappointed at last year’s Festival.

Tristan Davidson’s Divilabother has been making hay this summer with five victories. His latest was earlier this month in a Class 3 at Uttoxeter. This is tougher.

James Owen’s Idaho Fire won twice in July, including a Class 2 at Uttoxeter. He can go well off his low weight.

Owen also runs No More Bolero, who has won a couple of Class 4s this month at Stratford and Hereford. This is much tougher.

Jonjo and AJ O’Niell’s Seaniecon won twice last season, then finished off running 5th in April at Punchestown in a Listed race. He is expected to go close.

But I prefer Dan Skelton’s Ace Of Spades, who won two Class 2s last term. He finished his season running in Grade 3 contests at Cheltenham and Aintree and was not disgraced on either occasion.

The William Hill Best Odds Guaranteed Handicap Chase is at 2.55. This Class 2 handicap is run over 3m 1f. The top weight here is Jonjo and AJ O’Neill’s Mt Fugi Park, who won a Class 3 at Uttoxeter in September, adding to a previous victory at Worcester in July. This is tougher, and his weight may be a problem.

Christian Williams’s Moon d’Orange has disappointed since winning a Grade 3 at Cheltenham in January 2025, after being highly tried after that victory he was running last month in a Class 4 at Worcester where he finished 7th of 9 runners.

Nigel Twiston-Davies’s Uncle Bert won at Aintree last December. He was last seen in a Grade 2 at the same course in April, where he finished 7th.

Dan Skelton’s Diamond Dealer won three times last season, including a Class 2 at Kelso in March. This is tougher, but he is on a good mark.

I like Sam Thomas’s Katate Dori, who won a Grade 3 at Kempton in February 2025. He was highly tried last season, and this drop back in class could get his season off to a flying start.

For the final leg of this week’s Lucky Fifteen I move back to the flat at Doncaster, and the 12.55 is the Class 2 Sky Sports Racing Sky 415 Handicap, a 5-furlong sprint. Michael Appleby’s Al Shabab Storm is a previous Group winner, but this season his only victory was on the all-weather at Newcastle in June. He has run two fine thirds on his last two outings at Doncaster and York, and top weight may find him out.

In that Doncaster race, Stuart Williams’s King Of Light was 5th, just one length behind Al Shabab Storm. He is 4lbs better off here, enough to reverse those placings. He has since won at Haydock.

Adam Kirby’s Ancient State won a Class 3 here at Doncaster last month but was then beaten almost two lengths at Haydock by King Of Light.

Julie Camacho’s Milford has not won for over two years. However, he has been runner-up 4 times since then and may be placed again.

Tim Easterby has bottom-weight Boston Dan, who won a Class 4 at Haydock last month but has not followed up on that victory, so it’s King Of Light for me.
