It’s the final day of Glorious Goodwood, and the big betting race of the whole week, the Stewards’ Cup, takes pride of place on Saturday. ITV Racing are covering four races from the Sussex Downs course, a Group 2, a Group 3 and two Class 2 handicaps, including the Stewards Cup.

The programme also features two races from Newmarket, a listed race and a class 2 handicap. From the six contests on offer, I have looked for value. Here are my thoughts and this week’s Lucky Fifteen.

Beginning at Goodwood with their ‘Glorious’ meeting, and the 2.25 is the Coral Summer Handicap, a Class 2 contest run over 1m 6f. Top weight here is Richard Hughes’s Calling The Wind, who is having his first run of the season. He won at Newcastle in July 2023, then ran down the field here at Goodwood a month later. He may find this trip on the sharp side.

The Gosdens won this race last year and run Intinso this time around. He was a winner at Wolverhampton in March and has been placed a couple of times since. He may be placed once again.

Richard Hannon’s Great Bedwyn was a fine winner at Newbury a fortnight ago and can go close again.

Ian Williams’s Dancing In Paris has won twice this summer at York and Ascot but he was defeated when stepping up into Class 2 company at Newbury.

I think that this race is between Charlie Johnston’s Align The Stars and Andrew Balding’s Fairbanks, and I side with the latter despite his rise in the weights after a fine win at Newmarket in July, where he won by almost two lengths beating several of the opponents he faces once again here.

At 3.00, it is the Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes. This is a Group 2 contest for fillies and mares run over 1m 6f. Sumo Sam won this last year for Paul and Oliver Cole, but she disappointed here at Goodwood in May, and this is her first run since.

David Menuisier’s Caius Chorister is a past course winner and has been runner-up in two Group 2s this season. She was well beaten in a Group 1 at Royal Ascot last time out, and this drop back in trip could see her hit the frame once again.

John and Thady Gosden run Free Wind who was a well beaten second at York in May. The intricacies of this course may find her out.

Ralph Beckett’s River Of Stars won a Listed race at Pontefract in June. She is a past Group 3 winner, but this race is a class above that.

F-H Graffard will be doing a raindance for his soft ground loving French raider Melo Melo, I doubt if she will get the soft ground she relishes.

There are two Irish runners: Henry de Bromhead’s Term Of Endearment, who won a Group 3 at York in May and my fancy, Joseph O’Brien’s Dancing Tango, who comes here after two unlucky seconds in Group company, then ran fifth in a hot contest at the Curragh, I just hope Goodwood will not be a problem for her.

The big betting race of the week is the Coral Stewards’ Cup at 3.35. This Class 2 race is run over 6 furlongs on the undulating Sussex Downs. French trainer A de Mieulle has one of the top weights, Dark Trooper, who went off favourite for the Wokingham at Royal Ascot and ran second. He has plenty of opponents he meets here behind him that day but has plenty of weight.

Archie Watson’s Albasheer never got a clear run in the Wokingham but has got over that setback and was victorious there last week. With a clear run, he can go close.

Karl Burke’s Lethal Levi was a fine 4th in the Wokingham and ran a good second at Newmarket in mid-July over 7 furlongs. This drop back in trip will help.

George Baker’s Get It won two Class 3s at Epsom and Windsor, then was well beaten at Ascot in mid-July over 5 furlongs. He is better over 6f.

I like John and Thady Gosden’s Mostabshir, who ran fourth over 7 furlongs at Royal Ascot. His last run can be forgiven as he ducked left at the start was bumped then short of room. With a good start, he can go close.

For my selection, I chose a proven Goodwood specialist, James Evans’s Dream Composer, who is a course and distance winner and is also a course winner over 5 furlongs, which is his preferred distance. But I think he is suited by the course undulations and camber, and after his fine win at Epsom in June and fourth last time at Ascot, the 6 furlongs at his favourite course will be no trouble.

For the final leg of my Lucky Fifteen, I move to Newmarket and the 2.05 the British Stallions Studs & Tony Morris EBF Fillies Nursery Handicap, a Class 2 contest over 6 furlongs. Ralph Beckett’s Ardeur won a Class 5 at Pontefract in June, then went off favourite next time out at the beginning of July but was well beaten in a Class 2 contest.

George Scott’s Griselda has won three Class 6s on the bounce but this is a massive step up in class.

Andrew Balding’s Ghost Run just got home in a Class 4 at Newbury a fortnight ago. This is tougher.

Clive Cox’s Magic Mild looks the answer after a victory here at Newmarket in July in a Class 2 contest. She can add to her tally.
