Game Week-10

Following last week’s heavyweight blockbusters (such as Chelsea v Manchester United and the massive title skirmish between Liverpool and Arsenal), Game Week-10 keeps the momentum rolling with managers under pressure, players coming back from injury and the league leaders striving to maintain their position at the summit.

Home comforts v Away resilience remains the major theme.

Grab a brew, check out the comprehensive game-by-game breakdowns below and let’s find some winners for Game Week 10!

EVERTON v COVENTRY

20.00 in England

Sky Sports

There wasn’t much to write home about in the 1st-half at St James’ Park on Monday Night Football, with the half-time cup of tea being the highlight after a goalless 45 minutes.

Things improved for the Toffees just after the restart when Thierno Barry tapped into an open net following a fumble from the Magpies Goalkeeper.

The much maligned Striker, who does miss a few chances, wasn’t going to miss that one.

There were no further goals and not much excitement in the 2nd-half, leaving Everton with a win over Newcastle from a 1-0 away day scoreline.

Jack Grealish has missed the last 2 games due to discipline issues.

One doesn’t know the exact reasons but the Man City loanee missed training, probably due to having a hangover.

We have all been there!

‘I’m not coming in to work today boss, I’ve got a touch of two bobs!’

That’s probably the text JG sent to David Moyes.

Coventry got back on track on Saturday by getting a victory over Sunderland from a 3-1 scoreline.

One didn’t think there would be many goals in the game, however, on the day, goals from Tatsuhiro
Sakamoto, Taiwo Awoniyi and Jack Rudoni, gave Frank Lampard’s Sky Blues the win.

Sunderland scored a consolation goal after the 3, when the damage had already been done.

The win has lifted Coventry out of the relegation zone and now above Manchester United, which is brilliant for everyone connected with the club.

Betfred offer Everton at Odds On 7/10, the Draw at 3/1 and 18/5 for Coventry to come away with all 3 points.

Betfred offer 2/1 that Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall Scores Anytime and Evens 1/1 that there are Under 2.5 Goals.

LEEDS UNITED v TOTTENHAM

12.30 in England

TNT Sports

The Archie Gray Derby.

Young Archie returns to Elland Rd, where the lad started his career, following in the footsteps of his dad Andy Gray, his Grandad Frank Gray and his Great Uncle, Eddie Gray.

‘Leeds, Leeds are falling apart again, Leeds, Leeds are falling apart again.’

Leeds United lost against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday, by a 2-0 scoreline.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin thought he’d scored the opener to give Leeds a lead but reminiscent of Kobe Bryant the Sheffield lad put the ball in the net with his arm (only 1 of them though).

So still nil-nil.

The Cherries then scored twice to inflict the defeat on the travelling Whites.

The West Yorkshire Puddings were confused about how to get back up t’North, with some even going on Google to see about the Ferry situation.

Ferrying On Together!

Tottenham beat Crystal Palace on Saturday evening, with goals from the 2 defenders Archie Gray and Jan Paul Van Hecke, giving Spurs the win from a 2-0 scoreline.

A rash challenge by Jean-Philippe Mateta on Micky Van De Ven in the 13th minute saw the Palace Striker receive a straight Red Card, leaving Tottenham with a man advantage for the remainder of the game.

That’s now 3 wins in a row for Roberto De Zerbi’s boys who are slowly climbing up the table.

A quick mention about (Sir) Harry Kane, who won this year’s Ballon d’Or.

One has put (Sir) in brackets because it’s only a matter of time before the legend is given a Knighthood.

The ex-Tottenham and current Bayern Munich Striker is a worthy winner and possibly England’s greatest ever player.

Sir Stanley Matthews, Sir Bobby Charlton, Kevin Keegan and Michael Owen, plus a few others might be in the conversation but HK never lets anyone down and is a great ‘mole rodel’ as Rodney would say.

All the best, Harry.

Betfred offer Leeds United at 6/4, the Draw at 5/2 and 7/4 for Tottenham to come away with all 3 points.

Betfred offer 6/1 that Omar Marmoush Scores First and 18/5 that Tottenham Win To Nil.

ARSENAL v HULL

15.00 in England

Arsenal won at Anfield for the first time in 14 years after Kai Havertz’s tap-in sealed a gritty 1-0 victory.

The win opens up a 3-point gap on Man City at the top of the Premier League and means Mikel Arteta’s side are 9 clear of Liverpool.

In a tough-fought encounter, the only difference was putting the ball in t’onion which the Gunners did and the Reds didn’t.

Arsenal head to the Czech Republic on Wednesday to face Slavia Prague in Matchday 4 of the Champions League-League Phase.

Hull gained a great point from a draw by a 2-2 score, against Ipswich at the MKM Stadium on Saturday.

After conceding a goal to trail at the break, Tim Iroegbunam and Ollie McBurnie scored in the 2nd-half, giving Hull a lead, however, Ipswich then scored a late equaliser to give both teams a point apiece from the Archbishop’s favourite scoreline.

There was a stat thrown up that every newly promoted team who has 11 points from the opening 10 games, have stayed up, so the Tigers will be hoping that trend continues.

It’s more than likely that Hull will still have 11 points after this Game Week-10 fixture.

Betfred offer Arsenal at Odds On 2/13, the Draw at 13/2 and 12/1 for Hull to come away with all 3 points.

Betfred offer 10/3 that Kai Havertz Scores First and 21/20 that Arsenal Win Both Halves.

FULHAM v NEWCASTLE

15.00 in England

Following 2 wins (Hull and Coventry), Fulham gained a brilliant point against Aston Villa on Saturday.

It could be argued that Alvaro Arbeloa’s men got a bit of good luck in a couple of incidents throughout the game.

Firstly, after conceding a penalty, Villa’s John McGinn smashed the ball into the crossbar and away it went.

Added to the penalty, the Fulham Goalkeeper Bernd Leno jumped up and touched the crossbar as John was running up to take the spot kick.

This is actually illegal, therefore the penalty should have been retaken, however, the on-field referee Sam Barrott and the dreaded VAR missed the incident so play carried on.

The Fulham goal came by the way of an error from the Villa ‘Keeper Zion Suzuki who, when trying to catch the ball from a cross, dropped the ball over the line, with the Goal Line Technology watch instantly giving the goal.

So it can be said, that Fulham had a big slice of luck to come away from the Midlands with a point, meaning 3 unbeaten games in a row, staving off the potential visit to the Job Centre for Alvaro Arbeloa.

Newcastle were booed off at half-time in their game against Everton at St James’ Park.

The Toon Army were not happy.

Neither team managed a shot on target in the opening 45 minutes so most were hoping for a better 2nd-half, whilst eating the pies and drinking the Bovril.

The disquiet got worse after the restart when Lukas Hornicek fumbled a shot that allowed Everton to score a simple goal from 2 yards out.

Newcastle’s first shot on target came in the 86th minute when Yoane Wissa had a tame effort saved easily by Jordan Pickford.

The game ended badly for the home team, leaving Newcastle with another loss, this time by a 1-0 scoreline.

Jacob Ramsey was shown 2 Yellow Cards in the 96th and 98th minute and the subsequent Red, to beat his mates into the showers.

The Toon Army weren’t happy at full-time either.

Betfred offer Fulham at 23/20, the Draw at 11/4 and 21/10 for Newcastle to come away with all 3 points.

Betfred offer 13/2 that Josh King Scores First and 8/5 that Harvey Barnes Scores Anytime.

NOTTINGHAM FOREST v MAN CITY

17.30 in England

Sky Sports

Nottingham Forest suffered another defeat on Saturday, this time against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium by a 2-0 scoreline.

That’s now 5 losses from the 9 Premier League games, with just 1 win and 3 draws from the others.

Last season, after 8 games, Evangelos Marinakis had already got rid of both Nuno Espírito Santo and Ange Postecoglou and was onto his 3rd Manager in Sean Dyche.

Forest had 5 points going into Game Week-10.

Oliver Glasner’s men have a point more going into this tough fixture against Man City.

The Tricky Trees drew their 10th game last season, giving Forest 6 points.

If they lose today, they will stay on 6 points which would mirror last term.

Therefore, the question needs to be asked, will Evangelos stick with Oliver, or like last season, move on to another Manager?

Having beaten Brighton at the Etihad in the Carabao Cup, albeit on penalties after the game finished 2-2, Brighton returned to Manchester on Saturday and inflicted a loss on City from a 1-0 away day scoreline.

That’s now back-to-back Premier League defeats for Enzo Maresca’s Blues who dropped to 2nd in the table following Arsenal’s win over Liverpool on Sunday.

City did have some great opportunities to score at least a couple but the Seagulls held out to gain a famous victory.

The gaffer needs to address this semi-slump and get City back firing again.

Man City are in Champions League action on Wednesday and face RB Leipzig in Germany before this late Saturday Afternoon fixture under the lights of the City Ground.

Over the past week, there have been all 8 Carabao Cup games on various television outlets, which John Newsome has watched most of them, due to different kick-off times.

One thing evident across all 8 games was the fact that the dreaded VAR wasn’t involved.

To watch a match, without the experience of VAR was refreshing.

A question to ask is this-

‘Why was VAR introduced?’

The irony in the introduction of the dreaded Video Assistant Referee, is the fact that it was brought in, at the start of the 2019/2020 Premier League season, the season that was paused in March 2020 due to Covid restrictions.

The games in the Carabao Cup were brilliant to watch, as one knew that whatever decision was made on the pitch, wasn’t going to get scrupulously dissected by a couple of blokes (ok maybe girls included, because you have to include the girls, otherwise they get the monk on).

Again, why was this introduced?

The real answer is because of money, the VAR keeps people in their jobs and unfortunately, however bad things get at Stockley Park, the dreaded is here to stay.

To add another narrative, Goal Line Technology, fair enough but VAR is spoiling the Beautiful Game.

Betfred offer Nottingham Forest at 7/2, the Draw at 3/1 and Odds On 7/10 for Man City to come away with all 3 points.

Betfred offer 12/5 that Erling Haaland Scores First and 13/10 that Man City Score in Both Halves.

BRIGHTON v BRENTFORD

14.00 in England

Sky Sports

A single Yasin Ayari goal, scored in the 11th minute, gave Brighton a brilliant victory over Man City at the Etihad on Saturday from a 1-0 scoreline.

City did have some good chances to get a few goals but Brighton’s resilience held up to give the Seagulls their first win at the Etihad.

Brighton continue their UEFA Conference League exploits on Thursday, heading to Spain to face Getafe in Matchday 3 of the league phase.

After 2 draws and a loss, Brentford got back to winning ways on Saturday, getting a victory over Nottingham Forest at the Gtech Stadium.

Forest did have their chances, however, couldn’t take them, meaning an Own Goal from Nikola Milenkovic and an Igor Thiago strike, gave Keith Andrews’ boys all 3-points and ended the 3-game winless run.

This will be a tough trip to the south coast which could see the Seagulls peck at the Bees without getting stung.

Betfred offer Brighton at slight Odds On 19/20, the Draw at 3/1 and 5/2 for Brentford to come away with all 3 points.

Betfred offer 3/1 that Pascal Gross Scores Anytime and 6/4 that there are Over 3.5 Goals.

CRYSTAL PALACE v LIVERPOOL

14.00 in England

Sky Sports

Pierre Sage is under increasing pressure following another defeat on Saturday, this time against Tottenham at the New Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Eagles didn’t help their chances when Jean Philippe Mateta made a horrendous challenge on Micky Van De Ven, which gave the referee no option but to show a straight Red Card.

That said, the referee, who was the experienced Michael Oliver initially showed a Yellow but was advised by the dreaded VAR to upgrade to a Red, leaving Palace a man down for 80 minutes or so.

The man advantage slowly bore fruit for Tottenham, who scored the opener just before the half-time whistle, then a 2nd in the 73rd minute to inflict the defeat on Crystal Palace from a 2-0 scoreline.

Maybe the Red Card incident gives Pierre a bit of extra time but the International Break is coming up after this game today, which historically, does give the owners of clubs the chance to make a change.

All the best Pierre, maybe Sage will provide the P45.

John Newsome received a few P45s in his time from the finance firm Sage.

This will be Crystal Palace’s 8th game played throughout the month of October.

Palace head to Germany on Thursday to take on Hoffenheim in the Europa League-League Phase.

Liverpool suffered a narrow defeat against Arsenal at Anfield on Sunday with a single Gunners goal, scored in the 16th minute being the difference.

Andoni Iraola’s Reds had 17 efforts to try and equalise, however, they didn’t actually have a shot on target, which will disappoint the Anfield Rappers and for that matter, Mr Iraola.

The 1-0 defeat is the first loss against Arsenal at Anfield in 14 years.

Liverpool are also in European action this week, with Andoni’s Reds heading to Turkey on Wednesday to face Fenerbahce.

The Turks have just parted ways with the Manager Ismail Kartal and appointed the ex-Liverpool Striker Dirk Kuyt as the interim boss.

Betfred offer Crystal Palace at 4/1, the Draw at 16/5 and Odds On 8/13 for Liverpool to come away with all 3 points.

Betfred offer 4/1 that Alexander Isak Scores First and 21/10 that Liverpool Win To Nil.

Away Win 0-2 Get 17/2 on Betfred & Claim your new account welcome offer!

IPSWICH v BOURNEMOUTH

14.00 in England

Sky Sports

The Gary O’Neil Derby.

Gary will be wanting to get one over his old employers after managing Bournemouth back in 2022/23 before being sacked by the Cherries hierarchy.

Ipswich gained a point from a draw by a 2-2 score against fellow newly promoted team Hull at the MKM Stadium on Saturday.

The excellently named Florentino scored the opener to give Ipswich an early lead and the advantage going into the 2nd-half.

Hull then scored twice, before Julio Enciso popped up with the equaliser soon after Hull’s 2nd to give both teams a point apiece.

As with Hull, Ipswich also have 11 points after 9 games, which usually means a newly promoted team with 11 points after 10 games, never gets relegated.

That could be the case for both teams this season but obviously, there is a long way to go and the hard work still has to be put in.

Bournemouth gained an easy 2-0 victory over Leeds at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday.

Leeds did think they had scored the opener, however, the dreaded VAR noticed that Dominic Calvert-Lewin, resembling Kobe Bryant, slam dunked the ball into the back of the net with his hand (stroke arm).

Evanilson then took advantage of an error from James Trafford who tried passing to a Leeds player but saw his pass cut out by Justin Kluivert who squared to Evo’ to slot in to an empty goal.

Amine Adli scored a late 2nd in the 94th minute to give Marco Rose’s Cherries their 6th win in a row (3 in the Premier League, 2 in the Champions League and 1 in the Carabao Cup).

Following Bournemouth’s historic victory over AC Milan in Matchday 3 of the Europa League, the Cherries head to the Czech Republic to face Sparta Prague in the next journey of that particular competition.

Sparta are 2nd in the Czech Premier League, behind Arsenal’s opponents Slavia, who sit at the top.

Maybe the Cherries and the Gunners can share the same plane.

Betfred offer Ipswich at 5/2, the Draw at 11/4 and Evens 1/1 for Bournemouth to come away with all 3 points.

Betfred offer 4/1 that Evanilson Scores First and 7/4 that Bournemouth Score in Both Halves.

SUNDERLAND v CHELSEA

14.00 in England

Sky Sports

Sunderland sit rock bottom of the Premier League following an away defeat against Coventry at the CBS Arena on Saturday.

Enzo Le Fee did convert a penalty midway through the 2nd-half, however, the damage had already been done with Coventry already having 3 goals on the board.

Regis Le Bris needs to re-find the formula that made the Black Cats so successful last season, otherwise, there is a chance that Sunderland will be cut adrift at the bottom of the table.

It’s strange to think that one of these teams is in European action this week and it’s not the 2-time Champions League and Europa League winners Chelsea.

It’s Sunderland, who host Dinamo Zagreb in Matchday 4 of the Europa League at the Stadium of Light on Thursday.

Goals from Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer gave Chelsea the win over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

After a cagey 1st-half that saw the game level, the home team came out after the break and were the better team, ultimately getting the 2 goals, Cole’s being from the penalty spot after a silly challenge by Lisandro Martinez that not only resulted in the penalty but saw Lisandro sent off.

It was the first time that Chelsea have kept a clean sheet at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League and just the second time in the 9 Premier League games so far that the Blues haven’t conceded, following the 2-0 win against Everton at Hill Dickinson a couple of weeks ago.

Xabi Alonso brought in the Brazilian Winger Estevao for his first start in the Premier League this season, with the youngster matching Romeo Lavia, Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers in having a brilliant game whilst on the pitch for the 87 minutes or so.

The lad was unlucky not to get his name on the scoresheet after twice putting the ball into the net but being adjudged offside on both occasions.

Betfred offer Sunderland at 12/5, the Draw at 13/5 and 21/20 for Chelsea to come away with all 3 points.

Betfred offer 8/5 that Brian Brobbey Scores Anytime and 7/4 that Cole Palmer Scores Anytime.

MANCHESTER UNITED v ASTON VILLA

16.30 in England

Sky Sports

So the feud between Michael and Bruno is over and Mr Fernandes was back in the starting lineup for the game against Chelsea last Saturday.

Mr Carrick stated that the decision to leave Bruno on the bench in the game against Bournemouth was purely for footballing reasons.

Ok Michael, one will believe you!

Never mind Ineos, United are in-a-mess, following yet another defeat, this time against Chelsea in the early Saturday Afternoon kickoff.

The 2-0 loss at Stamford Bridge is Manchester United’s 9th winless game in a row, in all competitions.

Premier League- 3 losses and 3 draws.

Carabao Cup- 1 loss.

Champions League 2 losses.

Although Michael Carrick has been given a stay of execution, John Newsome thinks that the lad’s time is up and he will be given the game against Roma and this one against Aston Villa, then depending on the result, will most likely be gone in the International Break, with Eddie Howe or Antonio Conte heading to Old Trafford.

The annoying thing where Michael is concerned, is the fact that Lisandro Martinez was shown 2 Yellow Cards and the subsequent Red, in the space of 1 minute and 22 seconds, not only giving away a penalty but leaving United with a man down for half an hour or so.

Michael Carrick doesn’t need his experienced Centre Back being indisciplined.

Both teams are in Champions League action this week, with Manchester United hosting AS Roma on Tuesday and Aston Villa travelling to Spain to take on Barcelona, also on Tuesday.

A quick story from an old EveryTip column published in April 2020, when the World stopped due to the COVID situation.

‘Manchester United All-Time Premier League Best Eleven’

9- Michael Carrick

‘One of Michael’s best games in a United shirt was against Roma in the Champions League in 2007.

With the 2nd-leg being at Old Trafford, United had to try and overturn a 2-1 deficit from their trip to the Italian capital.

Sir Alex surprised everyone for the return leg and started the forgotten man Alan Smith who’d had an indifferent time in Manchester after going along the M62 from Leeds United.

That night in April 2007, yes, 13 years ago, is up there with the best European nights from any English team.

Sir Alex’s decision to start Smith as his Number-9, paid off immensely with Michael Carrick scoring the 1st of his 2 and United’s 7.

Alan, Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo gave United a 4-0 half-time lead and a 5-2 aggregate lead against the Romans going into the break.

CR 7 added the 5th after the interval, with Michael getting his 2nd and the 6th.

Roma pulled a goal back before Patrice Evra finished off the rout with United’s 7th, giving them a great 7-1 victory and an aggregate 8-3 trouncing of the Italians.’

That column is still available and worth a read, with everyone hoping that there isn’t a further pandemic anytime soon.

Manchester United’s Best 11-

1- Peter Schmeichel
2- Gary Neville
3- Denis Irwin
4- Rio Ferdinand
5- Steve Bruce
6- Roy Keane
7- Eric Cantona
8- David Beckham
9- Michael Carrick
10- Wayne Rooney
11- Ryan Giggs

Substitutes-

Edwin Van Der Sar, Patrice Evra, Nemanja Vidic, Jaap Stam, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt, Bryan Robson, Paul Ince, Cristiano Ronaldo, Ruud Van Nistelrooy and of course Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Maybe a few will disagree with those names but that’s why one loves the Beautiful Game, which throws up discussion and disagreement over no end of topics.

It’s a great game to play, so next time one is having a get-together with the mates, maybe over a glass or several, whichever team one supports, have a ‘Best 11’ chat.

Aston Villa will be wondering how they only gained a point against Fulham on Saturday, when really all 3 should have been in the bag.

Nicolas Jackson scored the opener in the 39th minute to give Villa the lead at the break.

John McGinn was given the opportunity to score earlier but saw his spot kick smash into the crossbar and fly away.

As mentioned in the Fulham v Newcastle preview above, the Fulham Goalkeeper Bernd Leno jumped up and touched the crossbar as John was running up to take the penalty.

This is actually illegal, therefore the kick should have been retaken, however, the on-field referee Sam Barrott and the dreaded VAR missed this so play carried on.

After that unfortunate incident, Zion Suzuki, reminiscent of the Widster playing for Leo’s back in the day, dropped the ball over the line after attempting to take a cross.

The Goal Line Technology instantly gave the goal, gifting Fulham an equaliser and ultimately giving both teams a point from a draw by a 1-1 score.

This might just be another tough afternoon for Mr Carrick and his set of Red Devils and if a defeat occurs, it could quite possibly be Michael’s final game in charge, with the International Break looming.

Betfred offer Manchester United at 5/4, the Draw at 11/4 and 15/8 for Aston Villa to come away with all 3 points.

Betfred offer 11/2 that Nicolas Jackson Scores First and 9/4 that Aston Villa Score in Both Halves.
