Game Week-17
Saturday 20th
Can one believe that this set of fixtures is the last one before Christmas 2025?
Additionally, there is only one game scheduled on Boxing Day this year.
Manchester United v Newcastle is the only fixture scheduled on what’s usually an iconic day for football, as well as many other sports.
Merry Christmas!
NEWCASTLE v CHELSEA
12.30 in England
TNT Sports
Newcastle suffered a devastating defeat against Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear Derby on Sunday.
Devastating, as not only was it a loss for Eddie’s Magpies, the Newcastle Star Striker scored the only goal of the game with a bullet header to gift Regis’ Black Cats the victory from a 1-0 scoreline.
One has not read that incorrectly, Newcastle’s Nick Woltemade somehow managed to head the ball past his own ‘Keeper, giving Sunderland all 3 points.
Cheers St Nicholas, which is apt really, seeing as Christmas is approaching.
The defeat leaves Newcastle in 12th place with the same 22 points as Tottenham from the opening 16 games played.
Chelsea gained a home win over Everton on Saturday in what could have been a tricky affair at Stamford Bridge, however, goals from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto gave Enzo’s Blues the points from a 2-0 scoreline.
After 2 draws and a loss in the Premier League plus a defeat in the Champions League over the last four games, the Chelsea faithful will be pleased to see their boys back on track.
It’s also good to see Cole Palmer back in action as the lad will not only be vital for the Blues over the remainder of the season but also be a big plus for the Three Lions prospects at next year’s World Cup.
This was a Game Week-36 affair when Chelsea last visited St James Park to take on Newcastle.
Newcastle secured a home win over Chelsea by a 2-0 scoreline, with goals from Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes, one in each half, giving Eddie’s Magpies the points against Enzo’s Blues.
Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson was shown a straight Red Card in the 35th minute leaving Chelsea a man down for the remainder of the game.
The score was 1-0 in favour of Newcastle when Nicolas was sent off.
Betfred offer Newcastle at 6/4, the Draw at 12/5 and 8/5 for Chelsea to come away with all 3-points.
Betfred offer 9/2 that Nick Woltemade Scores First and 15/8 that Cole Palmer Scores Anytime.
(If your pre-match First Goalscorer bet scores First and then scores a Second, Betfred DOUBLE the odds.
If they score a Third, Betfred TREBLE the odds.)

BOURNEMOUTH v BURNLEY
15.00 in England
Bournemouth played in the game of the weekend and possibly the game of the season so far on Monday Night Football.
Antoine Semenyo, Evanilson, Marcus Tavernier and Eli Junior Kroupi all scored to give the Cherries 4 goals against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Unfortunately for the faithful, who had made the long journey North for a Monday night game, United also scored 4 goals, giving both teams a point from a draw by a sensational 4-4 score.
It was a brilliant game to watch with goals flying in all over the place, as both teams took the lead, equalised then fell behind, over the 90-odd minutes.
The point gained leaves Andoni Iraola’s Cherries in 13th place with 21 points from the 16 games played.
Burnley suffered another defeat on Saturday, this time against Fulham at Turf Moor by a 3-2 scoreline.
Despite goals from Lesley Ugochukwu and Oliver Sonne the Clarets conceded 3, ultimately losing their 7th Premier League game in succession and the 12th overall.
Burnley stay in 19th place with 10 points from the 16 games played already.
It was October 2023 when Bournemouth last hosted Burnley in the Premier League.
Goals from Antoine Semenyo and Philip Billing gave Andoni’s Cherries the home victory over Vincent’s Clarets by a 2-1 score.
Charlie Taylor had scored first for Burnley before the Bournemouth goals.
Betfred offer Bournemouth at Odds On 4/9, the Draw at 16/5 and 11/2 for Burnley to come away with all 3-points.
Betfred offer 4/1 that Antoine Semenyo Scores First and 7/5 that Bournemouth Win To Nil.
(If your pre-match First Goalscorer bet scores First and then scores a Second, Betfred DOUBLE the odds.
If they score a Third, Betfred TREBLE the odds.)

BRIGHTON v SUNDERLAND
15.00 in England
Brighton suffered a defeat against Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday.
Although Liverpool are going through a tricky period at the moment, Brighton couldn’t take advantage of the poor form and succumbed to an away-day loss from a 2-0 scoreline.
Brighton sit in 10th place with 23 points from the 16 games completed.
Sunderland got the North East Bragging Rights over Newcastle on Sunday, gaining a somewhat fortuitous victory over Newcastle in the Tyne-Wear Derby by a 1-0 scoreline.
Fortuitous, due to the Sunderland goal coming via a header from the Newcastle Striker Nick Woltemade.
An early Christmas present from St Nicholas.
Sunderland sit in 8th place with the same 26 points as Liverpool, Manchester United and Crystal Palace, all having completed the 16 fixtures on offer so far.
The only slight negative for everyone connected with the Black Cats is, quite a few of the players are now heading over to Morocco to take part in the African Cup of Nations for their respective countries.
Whilst a lot of teams are losing players to the AFCON Tournament, Sunderland are losing the most.
So it will be interesting to see how the Black Cats perform over the next few weeks.
These two teams haven’t met in a league game for over 20 years.
Sunderland last ventured the long distance South to take on Brighton in a Championship encounter back in February 2005, where the home team got the win from a 2-1 scoreline.
The game took place at the Withdean Stadium which was Brighton’s home before the Amex was built.
Goals from Richard Carpenter and Mark McCammon gave Mark McGhee’s Brighton the victory over Mick McCarthy’s Sunderland.
Julio Arca scored the Sunderland goal late on when the score was 2-0 in favour of Brighton.
Although it was a defeat for the Black Cats, Sunderland actually finished top of the Championship and were promoted to the Premier League.
The Seagulls finished in 20th place.
Betfred offer Brighton at Odds On 8/13, the Draw at 11/4 and 4/1 for Sunderland to come away with all 3-points.
Betfred offer 4/1 that Danny Welbeck Scores First and 7/4 that Brighton Win To Nil.
(If your pre-match First Goalscorer bet scores First and then scores a Second, Betfred DOUBLE the odds.
If they score a Third, Betfred TREBLE the odds.)

MAN CITY v WEST HAM
15.00 in England
Despite suffering a high-profile defeat against Crystal Palace in last season’s FA Cup Final, Man City gained a professional away day win over Palace at Selhurst Park on Sunday.
Erling Haaland scored twice including a penalty, with Phil Foden notching in between Erling’s goals.
The win came off the back of a victory over Real Madrid in the Champions League the previous Wednesday, which in truth was an easy game over a struggling set of Los Blancos.
Man City keep the pressure on Arsenal, staying in 2nd place with 34 points, still 2 points adrift of the Gunners who sit at the summit.
All to play for!
West Ham suffered a loss against Aston Villa on Sunday in the Battle of the Claret and Blues.
Despite goals from Mateus Fernandes and Jarrod Bowen, which gave the Hammers a narrow lead at the break (the unfortunate Konstantinos Mavropanos was credited with an OG to half the deficit), Villa scored twice in the 2nd-half to inflict the defeat by a 3-2 scoreline.
The defeat leaves West Ham in the relegation zone, sitting 18th with 13 points from the opening 16 games completed.
Man City gained an easy home win over West Ham in last season’s encounter between the two at the Etihad.
Vladimir Coufal was credited with an Own Goal after 10 minutes to give City an early advantage.
Erling Haaland scored the 2nd just before half-time.
Erling then added his 2nd and City’s 3rd soon after the restart with Phil Foden getting a 4th for the home team before the hour mark.
Niclas Fullkrug scored a West Ham consolation goal in the 71st minute but with no further goals, Man City held on for the points from a 4-1 scoreline.
Julen Lopetegui was in charge of the Hammers at the time but was sacked soon after that game.
If one wants to know what the ex-Wolves and West Ham Manager is up to now, Julien ‘No I’ (the Bubbles faithful would probably say ‘No Idea) will be at next year’s World Cup overseeing Qatar after becoming their Manager in May 2025.
Betfred offer Man City at Odds On 2/11, the Draw at 11/2 and 11/1 for West Ham to come away with all 3-points.
Betfred offer 7/4 that Erling Haaland Scores First and 23/20 that Man City Win Both Halves.
(If your pre-match First Goalscorer bet scores First and then scores a Second, Betfred DOUBLE the odds.
If they score a Third, Betfred TREBLE the odds.)

WOLVES v BRENTFORD
15.00 in England
Wolves suffered their 9th straight Premier League loss on Saturday, succumbing to an away-day defeat by a 2-1 scoreline against Arsenal at the Emirates.
The goal scored by Toluwalese Emmanuel Arokodare in the 90th minute, drew the game level following an unfortunate Own Goal when the ball hit the crossbar from an Arsenal corner and rebounded into the net off the back of the Wolves Goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.
The late equaliser stunned everyone in attendance at the Emirates.
Could Wolves hold on for a sensational point?
The answer was no, as another OG credited to Yerson Mosquera in the 94th minute was enough to give the home team the win from a 2-1 scoreline.
Everyone connected with Wolves (and Man City) were gutted with the result that leaves Rob Edwards’ Gold and Blacks at the bottom of the table with 2 points from the 16 games played.
Brentford gained a point from a draw by a 1-1 score against Leeds United at the GTech on Sunday.
After a goalless first 70 minutes, Jordan Henderson was credited with the Bees goal following a strike in the box.
In truth the ball looked to be going wide until it took a nasty deflection off the Leeds player, however, Jordan was given the goal.
Unfortunately, for everyone connected with Brentford, their idols conceded a goal in the 82nd minute that eventually earned both teams a point apiece.
Brentford sit in 15th place with the same 20 points as Fulham, both having completed 16 fixtures.
Both teams shared the points from a draw by a 1-1 score when Wolves last hosted Brentford at Molineux.
That was the final game of the 2024/25 campaign when both had one flip-flop on the beach.
Bryan Mbeumo scored the Brentford goal after 20 minutes with Marshall Munetsi replying for Wolves in the 75th minute.
It was then down to Aldi to purchase sun cream for the impending holiday abroad.
Betfred offer Wolves at 5/2, the Draw at 23/10 and 21/20 for Brentford to come away with all 3-points.
Betfred offer 6/1 that Kevin Schade Scores First and slight Odds On 4/5 that there are Under 2.5 Goals.
(If your pre-match First Goalscorer bet scores First and then scores a Second, Betfred DOUBLE the odds.
If they score a Third, Betfred TREBLE the odds.)

TOTTENHAM v LIVERPOOL
17.30 in England
Sky Sports
Tottenham suffered an away-day defeat against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Sunday.
The home team scored 3 times to get the victory from a 3-0 scoreline.
That loss leaves Tottenham in 11th place with the same 22 points as Newcastle from the opening 16 games played.
At the moment, Thomas Frank is still finding his feet as the Tottenham Manager, however, the results do need to improve or pressure will begin to mount on the ex-Bees Boss.
Liverpool got back to winning ways last week, firstly with a victory over Inter Milan in the Champions League, then a win against Brighton on Saturday at Anfield.
Hugo Ekitike scored both goals to give Arne’s New Slots the points from a 2-0 scoreline.
The Mo Salah Saga has quelled a little with Mo being reintegrated back into the Liverpool squad for the game on Saturday, after being left out for the trip to Italy.
Although Arne Slot named Mo as a substitute, following an injury to the Right Back Joe Gomez after 25 minutes, Arne sent Mo on mainly to keep everyone happy.
The Egyptian King did have a good hour or so and made the assist for Hugo’s 2nd goal.
The lad is now off to Morocco to meet up with his Egypt teammates for the African Cup of Nations.
Liverpool sit in 7th place, with the same 26 points as Sunderland, Manchester United and Crystal Palace, all having completed 16 fixtures.
This was an amazing game when Tottenham last hosted Liverpool in the Premier League.
Arne’s Slot Machines gained the away day victory over Ange’s Spurs by a 6-3 scoreline with the goals going in as follows-
23′ Luis Diaz- (Liverpool 0-1)
36′ Alexis Mac Allister- (Liverpool 0-2)
41′ James Maddison- (Tottenham 1-2)
45+1′ Dominik Szoboszlai- (Liverpool 1-3)
Half-Time Pan of Scouse.
54′ Mo Salah- (Liverpool 1-4)
61′ Mo Salah- (Liverpool 1-5)
72′ Dejan Kulusevski- (Tottenham 2-5)
83′ Dominic Solanke- (Tottenham 3-5)
85′ Luis Diaz- (Liverpool 3-6)

EVERTON v ARSENAL
20.00 in England
Sky Sports
Following 2 wins, a loss, then 2 more wins, Everton suffered a loss on Saturday, this time against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge by a 2-0 scoreline.
That suggests a win today, however, the opponents are Arsenal so one cannot be assured of a victory.
Everton sit in 9th place with 24 points from the opening 16 games completed.
When a team wins a Premier League Title, there’s usually a lot of luck thrown in along the way.
Arsenal could say that they had a lot of luck against Wolves at the Emirates on Saturday.
Although the Gunners eventually got the win by a 2-1 scoreline, both goals came from mistakes by the Wolves players.
Firstly, the Wolves Goalkeeper saw the ball rebound off the crossbar back onto his head then into the net.
One-nil!
Wolves then scored an equaliser in the 90th minute, however, it was more than likely that the game would continue until Arsenal scored the winner, which eventually occurred in the 94th minute, again coming from a mistake by a Wolves player who was credited with another Own Goal.
The (lucky) win leaves Arsenal at the Top of the Premier League with 36 points from the opening 16 games played.
Man City and Aston Villa are on the coattails with 34 and 33 points respectively.
All to play for!
Both teams shared the points from a draw by a 1-1 score in last season’s encounter between the two at Goodison Park.
Leandro Trossard scored the opener to give Arsenal a lead at the break before a converted Iliman Ndiaye penalty just after the restart gave both a point apiece.
It’s now the New Hill Dickinson Stadium that will host the Gunners for the first time.
Betfred offer Everton at 9/2, the Draw at 11/4 and Odds On 4/7 for Arsenal to come away with all 3-points.
Betfred offer 5/1 that Bukayo Saka Scores First and 11/8 that Arsenal Win To Nil.
(If your pre-match First Goalscorer bet scores First and then scores a Second, Betfred DOUBLE the odds.
If they score a Third, Betfred TREBLE the odds.)

LEEDS UNITED v CRYSTAL PALACE
20.00 in England
Sky Sports
Leeds United gained a point from a draw by a 1-1 score against Brentford at the GTech Stadium on Sunday.
After a goalless 70 minutes, Brentford scored the opener to take the lead.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored an equaliser in the 82nd minute and with no further goals, both teams shared the points.
The point gained, as it’s always a point gained, leaves Leeds in 17th place with 16 points from the opening 16 games played.
The West Yorkshire Puddings all went off to the Train Station for the ride back up the road, singing their famous ditty,
‘Marching On Together!’
A few didn’t make the train home as the White Puddings tried paying for their train tickets with a B and Q Discount Card.
This fixture was originally scheduled for Sunday Afternoon, however, it has now been changed to Saturday Night due to Palace’s Carabao Cup tie against Arsenal next Tuesday.
Palace also play against KuPS (who are a Finnish team) in the Europa Conference League on Thursday meaning 3 games in the space of 5 days for the Eagles.
Palace suffered a defeat against Man City at Selhurst Park last Sunday.
The loss by a 3-0 scoreline leaves Palace in 5th place, in with a cluster of teams who all have 26 points from 16 games played, those being Manchester United, Liverpool and Sunderland.
As mentioned previously, Crystal Palace don’t have a good record following a Thursday Night Europa Conference League game, so this could just be Leeds United’s lucky day.
It was April 2023 when the Eagles last flew the long way North to Elland Rd to face the Whites.
Crystal Palace under the guidance of Roy Hodgson got the away day victory over Javi Gracia’s Leeds United by a 5-1 scoreline.
Patrick Bamford scored the opener for Leeds after 21 minutes which was equalised by Marc Guehi on the stroke of half-time.
It was then the Palace show with Jordan Ayew (2), Eberechi Eze and Odsonne Edouard all scoring to give Roy’s Boys the brilliant away win over the West Yorkshire Puddings who literally were falling apart and subsequently relegated a few weeks later.
Betfred offer Leeds United at 13/8, the Draw at 21/10 and 13/8 for Crystal Palace to come away with all 3-points.
Betfred offer 5/1 that Dominic Calvert-Lewin Scores First and Evens 1/1 that there are Over 2.5 Goals.
(If your pre-match First Goalscorer bet scores First and then scores a Second, Betfred DOUBLE the odds.
If they score a Third, Betfred TREBLE the odds.)

Sunday 21st
ASTON VILLA v MANCHESTER UNITED
16.30 in England
Sky Sports
Aston Villa gained a great away-day victory over West Ham at the London Stadium on Sunday.
Despite conceding 2 goals and trailing at the break, Morgan Rogers scored twice in the 2nd-half to give Villa the win from a 3-2 scoreline.
West Ham had scored an Own Goal in the 1st-half to make the score 2-1 in their favour at the interval.
Aston Villa do concede goals but have players such as Ollie Watkins, Donyell Malen, Emi Buendia and of course, Morgan to get them out of trouble if the other team scores.
That is Villa’s 9th straight win in all competitions, 6 in the Premier League and 3 in the Europa League.
Added to that, it’s the 15th victory out of the last 17 games, in all competitions, with just a loss against Liverpool in the Premier League and a loss against Go Ahead Eagles in the Europa League.
That leaves Villa in 4th place with 33 points from the 16 games completed.
Manchester United gained a point from a draw by a sensational 4-4 score against Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Monday.
The goals going in as follows-
13′ Amad Diallo- (United 1-0)
40′ Antoine Semenyo- (B’mouth 1-1)
45+4′ Casemiro- (United 2-1)
Half-Time Meat and Potato Pie and Bovril.
46′ Evanilson- (B’mouth 2-2)
52′ Marcus Tavernier-(B’mouth 2-3)
77′ Bruno Fernandes- (United 3-3)
79′ Matheus Cunha- (United 4-3)
84′ Eli Junior Kroupi- (B’mouth 4-4)
Full-Time Chicken Nuggets, Fries and Diet Coke.
It was a brilliant game to watch but probably not a great advert for Defending in Football.
If one looks at the goals, United were leading at the break.
An astonishing statistic popped up which stated that Manchester United had never lost a game, when leading at half-time, since 1984.
A record of 394 games played, 359 wins, 35 draws with no defeats.
The last time United lost a game when leading at the interval was against Ipswich Town in May 1984.
Despite falling behind against Bournemouth after the break, the record remains in tact.
Regarding this season, United have lost 4 times in their 16 Premier League games, with 7 wins and 5 draws out of the others.
However, the last 3 home games have produced 2 draws and a defeat, which does need improving.
The point gained from the bizarre result against Bournemouth leaves United in 6th place with the same 26 points as Crystal Palace, Liverpool and Sunderland.
The scorer wasn’t needed when these two teams met at Villa Park last season with both teams gaining a point from a draw by a 0-0 score.
One suggests there will be goals today.
Betfred offer Aston Villa at 11/10, the Draw at 5/2 and 11/5 for Manchester United to come away with all 3-points.
Betfred offer 7/1 that Morgan Rogers Scores First and 6/4 that there are Over 3.5 Goals.
(If your pre-match First Goalscorer bet scores First and then scores a Second, Betfred DOUBLE the odds.
If they score a Third, Betfred TREBLE the odds.)

FULHAM v NOTTINGHAM FOREST

Fulham gained a victory over Burnley at Turf Moor on Saturday.
Goals from Emile Smith-Rowe, Calvin Bassey and Harry Wilson gave Marco Silva’s Cottagers the win over the ex-Boss Scott Parker and his Clarets by a 3-2 score.
Burnley scored when it was 1-0 and 3-1 in favour of Fulham.
After drawing their first two games, Fulham’s last 14 fixtures have produced 6 wins and 8 losses, leaving them in 14th place with the same 20 points as Brentford.
Nottingham Forest probably got one of the best results from Game Week-16, gaining a victory over Tottenham at the City Ground by a 3-0 score.
Callum Hudson-Odoi scored twice, one in each half to give Forest a comfortable lead going into the last 15 minutes.
Ibrahim Sangare added a 3rd in the 79th minute to round off the goals giving Sean Dyche’s Tricky Trees the win over Thomas Frank’s Struggling Spurs.
Forest sit in 16th place with 18 points from the 16 games completed.
Fulham gained the home win when Nottingham Forest last visited Craven Cottage.
Emile Smith-Rowe scored the opener in the 15th minute which was equalised by Chris Wood to take both teams in level at the break.
Calvin Bassey then scored just after the hour mark and with no further goals Fulham got the victory over Forest by a 2-1 scoreline.
Betfred offer Fulham at 5/4, the Draw at 11/5 and 21/10 for Nottingham Forest to come away with all 3-points.
