Game Week-4

Well, the football continues.

The Premier League waits for no man (or woman).

Another weekend, another 10 games and another opportunity to try and win a few quid.

There are 5 games at 15.00 in England on Saturday, followed by Tottenham v Everton at 17.30 and Sunderland v Arsenal at 20.00.

Sunday brings the Manchester Derby.

Manchester United v Man City at Old Trafford, which kicks off at 16.30 in England.

That’s not the end though, there’s Leeds United v Newcastle under the Elland Road lights on Monday Night Football.

There are plenty of betting opportunities and John Newsome has an eye on a few.

Remember Betfred’s ‘Double Delight/Hat-trick heaven promotion.’

If your pre-match First Goalscorer bet scores First and then scores a Second, Betfred DOUBLE the odds.

If they score a Third, Betfred TREBLE the odds.

One can find all of the teams’ current Premier League position and the points on the board from the games played so far, at the end of this column.

Saturday, September 12th

BOURNEMOUTH v BRENTFORD

15.00 in England

This looks like a proper scrap.

Marco Rose’s Cherries have enough attacking quality to cause Keith Andrews’ Bees problems, especially at the Vitality but the visitors are exactly the sort of side who can make life uncomfortable for anybody.

Marcus Tavernier and a Newcastle Own Goal gave Bournemouth a point from a draw by a 2-2 score at St James’ Park on Saturday.

Bournemouth have the firepower of Evanilson, Justin Kluivert and the Brazilian Rayan, plus the Midfield General of Alex Scott, who can add to the goalscoring now and again.

That said, Brentford have Igor Thiago, who was picked by Carlo Ancelotti for the opening fixture of the World Cup against Morocco, however, unfortunately for the Bees faithful and Igor himself, he was never seen again in the remaining 4 games.

There’s also Kevin Schade, who scored 11 goals in the 2024/25 season and 8 goals in the last campaign, with 1 in the bag already.

Vitaly Janelt scored the Bees’ goal against Sunderland on Saturday, which gave both teams a point from a draw by a 1-1 score.

One of 6 draws over Game Week-3.

Brentford won’t be coming to sit back.

There should be chances at both ends and it is a struggle to separate the two teams.

Betfred offer Bournemouth at 8/5, the Draw at 13/5 and 6/4 for Brentford to come away with all 3 points.

Betfred offer 8/5 that Justin Kluivert Scores Anytime and 9/5 that Kevin Schade Scores Anytime.

ASTON VILLA v NOTTINGHAM FOREST

15.00 in England

Villa Park will be lively for this Midlands Derby.

Aston Villa still have plenty of quality, despite the loss of Ezri Konsa, Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans and Ollie Watkins.

Added to those, the Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has left, with Zion Suzuki coming in between the sticks.

Zion has a great engine on him.

Aston Villa are in Champions League action this week and head to Belgium on Tuesday to take on Club Brugge in the opening League Phase game.

The changes made to the squad have stifled the attacking threat, so it’s a matter of whether there is enough to trouble Forest.

Despite having 74% possession against Hull in the late Saturday Afternoon kickoff, Aston Villa could only manage 1 shot on target, which is the only shot on target that Villa have had in the 3 games played so far.

Unai Emery is an experienced Manager, so he should be able to get his new players to gel, enabling the Villain faithful to hopefully start to see a few goals.

That said, Oliver Glasner’s Tricky Trees won’t simply roll over.

Forest are capable of making the game an awkward one but can they also score, having failed to find the back of the net in 3 of the 4 games played so far, with 2 clashes against Leeds at the City Ground (including the Carabao Cup game) with the home team failing to score in either game?

The Tricky Tree faithful haven’t seen a goal scored by Forest at their iconic home, with the 2 goals up to now coming in the away trip to Anfield.

Oliver is still finding his way at Forest but following his time at Selhurst Park, it’s clear that Mr Glasner is a good Manager, so the Tricky Trees faithful will have to be patient and wait for the good times to come.

One thinks Villa will have too much today, considering the game is at Villa Park.

Betfred offer Aston Villa at slight Evens 1/1, the Draw at 5/2 and 11/4 for Nottingham Forest to come away with all 3 points.

Betfred offer 7/1 that Emiliano Buendia Scores First and 23/10 that Aston Villa Win To Nil.

CHELSEA v HULL CITY

15.00 in England

One could easily say that Chelsea should win this one and most likely the Blues will, however, Hull have made a brilliant start to life in the Premier League and remain unbeaten with 2 wins and a draw from 3.

Some will even suggest that this is one of the strongest home selections of the weekend, however, although this EveryTip column predicts a home win, it may not be as easy as being the ‘strongest’.

That said, if one looks at the fixtures over this weekend and for that matter, every Game Week, it’s difficult to say who is the strongest team at home.

Chelsea suffered a narrow defeat against Arsenal on Sunday.

Morgan Rogers did score after 2 minutes, making the Blues the first team in Premier League history to score in the opening 5 minutes of the first 3 games.

Unfortunately for the faithful, Arsenal scored twice to inflict the loss from a 2-1 scoreline, as predicted in this EveryTip column last week.

Xabi Alonso is a dynamic Manager and despite it not working out for the ex-Liverpool Midfielder at the Bernabéu, Xabi did have a brilliant few seasons as the Bayer Leverkusen Boss, culminating in winning the 2023/24 Bundesliga Title, for the first time in Leverkusen’s history.

Added to that win, Bayer Leverkusen went the whole season unbeaten, with 28 wins and 6 draws, which those good at Math will know gave BL 90 points from the 34-game campaign.

The German Invincibles!

Mr Alonso has put his stamp on the Chelsea team who, with players such as Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro, Pedro Neto and the new boy Morgan Rogers, will always be a threat going forward.

However, Xabi likes a 3-4-2-1 set-up which, as shown in the 3 games so far, has produced plenty of goals, scoring 8 but conceding 7, so it’s a case of-

‘we’ll score more goals than you!’

Hull are back in the Premier League and deserve plenty of credit for getting here but a trip to Stamford Bridge is a different proposition.

Chelsea will expect to dominate but as shown in the previous 3 games, Sergej Jakirovic knows how to get the best out of his players without possession.

Hull have brought in quite a few players in the recent Transfer Window, so it’s a matter of whether Sergej can immediately get the best out of his new boys.

In the home fixture against Manchester United, Hull had 28% possession but won 2-0.

Away against Coventry, the Tigers had 31% possession, again, Hull won, this time 1-0.

In Saturday’s game against Aston Villa at the MKM Stadium, which ended in a 0-0 draw, it was another backs-against-the-wall performance which saw Hull have just 26% possession but once again, the Tigers didn’t concede a goal and haven’t conceded yet in the opening 3 games.

Despite all the new incomings, probably one of the best deals was Ollie McBurnie signing a new contract.

How Ollie didn’t make the Scotland squad for the World Cup is beyond comprehension.

That’s not hindsight either.

The following is a section taken from this EveryTip column published back on June 2nd, in John Newsome’s World Cup preview.

(Still available to read.)

‘Scotland Squad-

The Scotland Manager Steve Clarke, has chosen the following 26 players.

Goalkeepers-

Craig Gordon
Angus Gunn
Liam Kelly

Defenders-

Grant Hanley
Jack Hendry
Aaron Hickey
Dom Hyam
Scott McKenna
Nathan Patterson
Anthony Ralston
Andy Robertson
John Souttar
Kieran Tierney

Midfielders

Ryan Christie
Findlay Curtis
Lewis Ferguson
Ben Gannon-Doak
Tyler Fletcher
John McGinn
Kenny Maclean
Scott McTominay

Forwards

Che Adams
Lyndon Dykes
George Hirst
Lawrence Shankland
Ross Stewart

If one looks at the 26-Man Scotland Squad, those who have no affiliation with Scotland will probably acquiesce about the situation, just knowing that the team will more than likely be home before the Postcards.

However, those Jocks out there who are excited about heading to the USA will have plenty to say about the upcoming Trump-a-thon and will probably have some thoughts about the Forwards that Steve Clarke is taking.

Over the past few years, John Newsome has often mentioned the Loveable OzScot, one of John’s oldest mates who now resides in Melbourne.

Kylie and Son are off to the United States to follow Scotland at their initial 3 Group Games and then maybe a fixture from the following round.

However, as John has pointed out to his mate, probably the plane fixtures for the long journey back to Australia will be the only ones worth
looking at.

John Newsome doesn’t profess to have extensive knowledge of the Scotland Squad or events in the SPL (Scottish Pub League) but has noticed a glaring omission from the 26-Man Squad.

These are the Forwards that Steve Clarke has chosen-

CHE ADAMS- Torino, 6 goals.

LYNDON DYKES- Birmingham/Charlton 5 goals (2 for Birmingham and 3 for Charlton).

GEORGE HIRST- Ipswich, 11 goals.

LAWRENCE SHANKLAND- Hearts, 16 goals.

ROSS STEWART- Southampton, 9 goals.

One player who can consider himself unlucky not to make the plane is the Hull Striker, Ollie McBurnie, who scored 19 goals for Hull last season, with the 19th of those 19, being the winner in the Play-Off Final against Middlesbrough, resulting in Hull being promoted to the Premier League.

One would assume that a Scottish International Striker who has scored more goals than any other Scottish Striker, in any league, not least in the Championship, would be the first name on Steve Clarke’s team sheet.

It’s hoped by all of the ‘Flower of Scotland’ brigade that the decision to leave Ollie at home, watching the brilliant Only Fools and Horses episode ‘To Hull and Back’ isn’t regretted by Mr Happy, Steve Clarke.’

Steve Clarke subsequently resigned from his post as the Scotland Manager after the team were indeed home before the postcards.

The New Scotland Manager Sébastien Pocognoli will no doubt be having a few trips to Hull for fish and chips and a look at Ollie.

It would be a major surprise if Mr McBurnie isn’t knocking loudly on the door of the next Scotland squad, for the upcoming fixtures against Slovenia, Switzerland and North Macedonia.

Betfred offer Chelsea at Odds On 2/9, the Draw at 11/2 and 10/1 for Hull to come away with all 3 points.

Betfred offer 10/3 that Cole Palmer Scores First and 7/4 that there are Under 2.5 Goals.

CRYSTAL PALACE v IPSWICH

15.00 in England

Selhurst Park can be a horrible place to visit.

The Eagle Ultras get behind their idols, with the home team having the attacking players, after keeping hold of Jean-Philippe Mateta and Ismaila Sarr when the Transfer Window closed, both of whom can change a game quickly.

Pierre Sage, who, like a number of the new boys coming into the Premier League, is still finding his feet at Selhurst Park, although the Frenchman does have a great squad which Oliver Glasner honed.

Palace gained a great win over Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday.

Fulham did score twice, however, a couple of goals from Tyrick Mitchell and a Ben Chilwell strike gave Pierre Sage his first victory as the Eagles’ Manager.

Ben has been re-signed by Crystal Palace, having played on loan from Chelsea in the 2024/25 season before heading to France to join Strasbourg.

Ipswich will compete but Gary O’Neil’s Tractor Boys come into this game following another defeat, this time against Liverpool at Portman Rd last Friday.

The loss from a 2-0 scoreline, which was predicted in this EveryTip column, is the second defeat from the 3 games played so far.

That said, Ipswich have had a tough start, with fixtures against Sunderland, Manchester United and Liverpool so this trip to Selhurst Park will feel like a kinder proposition.

Betfred offer Crystal Palace at slight Odds On 9/10, the Draw at 13/5 and 3/1 for Ipswich to come away with all 3 points.

Betfred offer 11/2 that Eddie Nketiah Scores First and slight Odds On 5/6 that there are Over 2.5 Goals.

Home Win 2-1- Get 7/1 on Betfred & Claim your new account welcome offer!

LIVERPOOL v FULHAM

15.00 in England

The Anfield Rappers get the opportunity to see their team at home in the traditional 3 PM kickoff slot.

Following a brilliant performance against Ipswich at Portman Rd on Friday Night Football, which saw Alexander Isak score twice to give Andoni Iraola his first Liverpool win from a 2-0 scoreline, this home game against a struggling Fulham team should produce another win.

Liverpool will want the points, however, the only slight drawback is the fact that the Fulham Manager is the ex-Reds Defender Alvaro Arbeloa who will want to put one over his old employers.

Liverpool’s attacking quality should shine, with the new boy Bradley Barcola, who had a brief cameo last Friday, maybe getting into the starting eleven.

Liverpool are one of 5 Premier League teams that are competing in the Champions League this week, with Andoni Iraola’s Reds facing Atletico Madrid at Anfield on Wednesday in the opening League Phase game.

Fulham are now 3 from 3 in the loss column following another defeat on Saturday, this time against Crystal Palace at Craven Cottage.

Josh King and Cesar Palacios did score twice to put the home team in front, however, both goals were equalised by the visitors to make it level at the break.

Unfortunately for the watching Cottagers in attendance, Palace then scored a 3rd to ultimately, inflict a defeat on Fulham from a 3-2 scoreline.

As mentioned, Alvaro Arbeloa played close to 100 times for Liverpool between 2006 and 2009, including the 2006/07 Champions League Final against AC Milan, getting a couple of minutes of action at the end of the game, which unfortunately for Double A and the Reds faithful, Milan won.

This will be another tough ask for Fulham with a home win predicted.

Betfred offer Liverpool at Odds On 4/9, the Draw at 4/1 and 11/2 for Fulham to come away with all 3 points.

Betfred offer 7/2 that Alexander Isak Scores First and 21/10 that Liverpool Win Both Halves.

TOTTENHAM v EVERTON

17.30 in England

Sky Sports

Tottenham got their first point of the campaign in a hard-fought stalemate against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground, with both teams failing to score in the 0-0 draw.

The 2 new boys from Man City, Omar Marmoush and Savio, both started the game for Tottenham and despite a few moments of attacking action, the 2 couldn’t penetrate a solid Forest defence.

Tottenham, along with Coventry and Aston Villa, have failed to score in the 3 Premier League games that have taken place so far.

Roberto De Zerbi (along with Frank Lampard and Unai Emery) need to get their lads on the training pitch and get them practising putting the ball in the back of the net.

Everton scored in the final seconds of the game against Manchester United at Hill Dickinson Stadium to snatch a draw from the jaws of defeat.

After a goalless 1st-half, United scored soon after the restart to go in front.

Tyrique George then scored a brilliant equaliser in the 83rd minute, however, United quickly went back in front 5 minutes later and with 5 minutes of added time up and the referee about to blow his whistle to end the game, the new boy, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, scored a brilliant equaliser to give both teams a point from a 2-2 scoreline.

It could be argued that Everton were second best but the Toffees hung in and with United looking vulnerable at the back, an equaliser was always on the cards, considering that United have conceded goals in each of the 3 games so far.

Jack Grealish is back on Merseyside and saw half an hour of action, with the Man City loanee instantly making an impact, which could mean that David Moyes throws JG in from the start today.

This should be an interesting encounter, however, one can’t see many goals being scored.

Betfred offer Tottenham at Evens 1/1, the Draw at 5/2 and 11/4 for Everton to come away with all 3 points.

Betfred offer Evens 1/1 that Both Teams DON’T Score and 5/2 that there are Under 1.5 Goals.

SUNDERLAND v ARSENAL

20.00 in England

TNT Sport

Sunderland gained a great point against Brentford at the GTech Stadium on Saturday.

The Bees did score first in the 71st minute, however, Enzo Le Fee scored an equaliser for the Black Cats in the 82nd minute to earn Sunderland a well-deserved draw from a 1-1 scoreline.

Sunderland now host the current Premier League Champions, who failed to get a win in last season’s affair at the Stadium of Light, with both teams gaining a point from a 2-2 score.

The ex-Gunner, Granit Xhaka, will definitely be up for this one.

Arsenal joined Man City as 1 of only 2 teams that have a 100% record of 3 wins from 3, following Sunday’s victory over Chelsea at the Emirates.

Chelsea did score the opener after 2 minutes to scare the watching Gooners, however, Arsenal were the dominant team and eventually scored an equaliser in the 25th minute.

Kai Havertz with the goal.

Martin Odegaard scored the 2nd and ultimate winner on 50 minutes, to give Arsenal the points from a 2-1 scoreline.

Obviously, there’s a long way to go but it does appear that it will be a duel between Arsenal and Man City as to who will win the Premier League.

Arsenal head to Italy on Wednesday to take on Napoli in the Champions League opener.

The Gunners’ midfield will come up against the Scottish lads, Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour.

Betfred offer Sunderland at 6/1, the Draw at 3/1 and Odds On 1/2 for Arsenal to come away with all 3 points.

Betfred offer 4/1 that Kai Havertz Scores First and 11/5 that Arsenal Win and there are Under 2.5 Goals.

Sunday, September 13th

COVENTRY v BRIGHTON

14.00 in England

Sky Sports

Coventry remain winless from the opening 3 games, following a narrow defeat against Man City on Saturday by a 1-0 scoreline.

Frank Lampard and the Sky Blues faithful shouldn’t be too concerned just yet as Coventry have had 3 tough games, which have included trips to the Emirates and the Etihad, as well as a fixture against a much improved Hull team.

So basically, 3 games against the Top 3 in the Premier League.

That said, Brighton will be another tough proposition, which may just see another loss for the Sky Blues.

Brighton gained a point from a draw by a 1-1 score against Leeds United at the Amex on Saturday.

As predicted in this EveryTip column last week.

The away team scored in the 1st-half to take a narrow lead at the break.

It was then left to the ex-Tottenham Centre-Back, Luka Vuskovic, to head home the equaliser in the 71st minute and with no further goals, both teams gained a point apiece.

It was mentioned in last week’s column that the youngster Malick Yalcouye will be exciting to watch for the Seagulls and that continued against Leeds, with Malick having another great game.

Fabian Hurzeler has a great squad and sets up his players in a 4-2-3-1 formation, whether at home or away and is always looking to score goals, with 8 in the bag so far, the joint-most, along with Chelsea, in the 3 games played.

The last time these two met at the CBS Arena was on New Year’s Eve back in 2011, some 15 years ago, with Coventry winning that Championship fixture 2-0.

What’s probably remarkable about the game is that the current Brighton Captain and Centre-Back, Lewis Dunk, played in the fixture.

Lewis, now 34, will be hoping for a better result today.

Betfred offer Coventry at 16/5, the Draw at 3/1 and slight Odds On 4/5 for Brighton to come away with all 3 points.

Betfred offer 3/1 that Malick Yalcouye Scores Anytime and 6/4 that Brighton Score in Both Halves.

Away Win 0-2- Get 17/2 on Betfred & Claim your new account welcome offer!

MANCHESTER UNITED v MAN CITY

16.30 in England

Sky Sports

Oh dear, what is happening to Manchester United this season?

It seems to be a case of 1 step forward and 2 steps backwards at the moment.

In the games played so far, United have a full house of results, with a loss against Hull, a win over Ipswich and now a draw against Everton.

Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko had both scored in the 2nd-half to put United in front at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

However, unfortunately for the Red Devil faithful, who had made the short trip along the road to watch their idols take on Everton, United conceded an equaliser for both goals, leaving both teams with a point apiece from a 2-2 scoreline.

The Archbishop was happy!

What will frustrate Michael Carrick and his Carrick Casuals is the fact that United were literally just that, too casual and conceded 2 sloppy Everton goals, with the equaliser coming in the last seconds of added time.

Manchester United do need to improve but have they got the players to take them to the next level?

One suggests, no.

The Transfer Window saw Carlos Baleba come in to Old Trafford but the lad hasn’t put on a jersey yet, having come from Brighton injured.

Michael picked the same starting eleven as the one which took to the field against Ipswich the previous week.

Maybe this needs addressing and freshening up somewhat.

Andrey Santos got 67 minutes in the opening fixture at Hull, yet has only played a further 16 minutes in the subsequent 2 games.

Mason Mount has been injured but was on the bench against Everton, however, didn’t see game time.

Maybe Mr Carrick will change the team around for this Manchester Derby.

Both teams play in the opening Champions League games in midweek.

The Numpty Neighbours (United) face the Azerbaijan team Sabah Baku at Old Trafford on Thursday, with the Noisy Neighbours (City) taking on FC Porto in Portugal on Tuesday.

It’s unlikely that the travelling will make much difference as Man City will have 2 extra days to recover before this Sunday Afternoon blockbuster.

Man City come into this Heavyweight clash with a 100% record of 3 wins from 3, which now leaves them and Arsenal as the only teams in the Premier League that have won all 3 games.

Whilst it was assumed that City would score a hatful against Coventry at the Etihad on Saturday, Frank Lampard’s Sky Blues put in a great shift to limit the home team to just 1 goal, with the main man Erling Haaland getting the solitary winner to give City 3 points from a 1-0 score.

The £125 Million man Enzo Fernandez was originally named as a substitute after not starting a competitive game since the World Cup Final in July.

However, Nico O’Reilly was injured during the warm-up, so Enzo came straight into the starting eleven, along with another new boy, Iliman Ndiaye.

Ayyoub Bouaddi came on for the final 14 minutes, giving the lad 6 minutes more than last week’s easy introduction.

Phil Foden had started the opening 2 games but was a substitute against Cov, seeing 24 minutes at the end of the match.

Interestingly, Enzo Maresca only made 3 substitutions, with the third being the youngster, Ryan McAidoo, who is just 18 years old and seems to be a favourite of the Manager.

Jeremy Doku has been injured and has missed all 3 games but it’s believed that the Belgian Winger should be fit for this game today and quite possibly the midweek Champions League fixture.

Betfred offer Manchester United at 21/10, the Draw at 3/1 and 11/10 for Man City to come away with all 3 points.

Betfred offer 7/4 that Erling Haaland Scores First and 5/4 that there are Over 3.5 Goals.

Away Win 1-3- Get 14/1 on Betfred & Claim your new account welcome offer!

LEEDS UNITED v NEWCASTLE

20.00 in England

Sky Sports

Leeds gained back-to-back draws on Saturday by the same 1-1 scoreline, this time against Brighton at the Amex, which, again, was predicted in this EveryTip column.

It’s probably going to be the scoreline of the season for the Whites, with the West Yorkshire Puddings seeing their idols not losing many but not set to win many either.

Jayden Bogle scored the Leeds’ goal, which did give the away team a lead at the break, however, Brighton scored in the 2nd-half, to give both teams a point apiece, leaving the Whites still unbeaten in the 3 games so far.

This game could easily be another 1-1 draw.

Newcastle themselves gained a point from a draw against Bournemouth at St James’ Park on Saturday.

Goals from Harvey Barnes and Jacob Ramsey rescued the Magpies after trailing by 2 goals to nil.

The unfortunate Malick Thiaw was credited with scoring an Own Goal, to give the Cherries a 2nd before Harvey halved the deficit with a superb shot.

Betfred offer Leeds United at 11/8, the Draw at 13/5 and 9/5 for Newcastle to come away with all 3 points.

Betfred offer 8/5 that Dominic Calvert-Lewin Scores Anytime and 9/5 that Yoane Wissa Scores Anytime.
