SPAIN v GERMANY

FRANCE v PORTUGAL

NETHERLANDS v AUSTRIA

ENGLAND v ITALY

The loveable OzScot over in Melbourne was up early for the opening game between Germany and Scotland, hoping his team matched the hosts stride for stride, which to be fair the Scots did, then the Referee blew his whistle to start the match.

It’s fair to say that Steve Clarke’s Tartan Boys were simply outplayed by Julian Nagelsmann’s German team who inflicted a devastating defeat on the Jocks by a 5-1 scoreline, with the Scotland goal coming via an OG by the ex-Chelsea Defender Antonio Rudiger.

Braveheart was watching the game with the Lad, who had enquired,

‘What time do Scotland kick-off, Dad?’

Braveheart replied,

‘Every 10 minutes Son!’

Mel Gibson’s favourite Plastic Australian couldn’t agree that the horrendous tackle by Ryan Porteous was a straight Red Card, however, most of the World who know football confirmed that it was a sending-off and Braveheart/Kylie must have Glaucoma.

John Newsome did receive a few expletives from Down Under but took it in good measure as it was understandable that the Scottish, wherever they were in the World, were upset with their idol’s performance.

The Flower of Scotland wilted a little after the display against Germany.

England played a couple of days later against Serbia in Gelsenkirchen and whilst a lot of people (a lot, including the Media) were negative about the performance, England gained a creditable victory over the Serbians by a 1-0 scoreline, with Jude Bellingham heading home the solitary winning goal.

John Newsome had offered up a starting eleven in the opening preview which Gareth Southgate made one adjustment to, bringing in Trent Alexander-Arnold for Kobbie Mainoo.

Whilst the performance wasn’t as exciting as Spain or Portugal’s opener, or Germany’s destruction of Scotland, the opening game victory was only the 2nd in England’s history at the Euros from 10 attempts.

The other one was also under Gareth Southgate in the game against Croatia at Wembley in 2021, meaning the win against Serbia was the first opening game victory on foreign soil.

Declan Rice was superb against the Serb as was Jude Bellingham, with Doctor Declan protecting the Back-Four

What most forgot is a victory from the first game, virtually guarantees progression to the last-16, which is all that any of the teams could ask for.

France, themselves laboured to a victory over Denmark by a 1-0 score with the goal coming from a Danish player.

The French then drew their 2nd game against the Netherlands by a 0-0 score and again played out a draw by a 1-1 scoreline in the finale against Poland who were already going home.

Yet the French are still deemed one of the favourites and England are deemed lacking confidence.

Back to the Scottish, it was then a game against Switzerland, or as the OzScot refers to them, the ‘Cheese Boys!’

The Hungary Team are known as ‘Salami Lovers’ according to the Big Man, however, it would have been more apt if the lad had said ‘Goulash Lovers!’

Which basically says that Kylie was in need of some food.

Maybe a Deep Fried Mars Bar or Haggis, Neeps and Tatties, washed down with a can of Tennents Extra.

The Swiss do a Cheese called Emmental that has holes in it, which coincidentally is
the same as the Scottish Defence.

Against Switzerland, a deflected Scott McTominay shot that came off the toe of the Newcastle Defender Fabian Schar, gave Scotland a lead, however, a bit of poor passing out by the Scot’s, allowed the ex-Liverpool and Stoke player, Xherdan Shaqiri to score a brilliant goal, making the game level at the interval.

Although it appeared to be another Own Goal, UEFA did officially award the strike to Mr McTominay.

With no more goals in the 2nd-half, both teams shared the points, leaving Scotland with the simple scenario of having to get a victory over Hungary.

Unfortunately for the Scots, that didn’t happen, in fact when it appeared a draw was on the cards against the Hungarians, Scotland conceded a goal in the final minute of the 10 added extra, to ultimately suffer a defeat by a 1-0 score.

The Hungary Goalkeeper didn’t have to make a save throughout the game which in itself tells a story.

There’s usually the term ‘Glorious Failure’ attached to Scotland after being knocked out of a tournament, however, this time, the word ‘Glorious’ can be deleted from that phrase.

Where’s that Salami?

There was a program on BBC Scotland preceding the Euro’s called,

‘Away with the Tartan Army-Scotland’s Best Moments!’

It’s fair to say that the opening game against Germany, plus the subsequent ones against Switzerland and Hungary, won’t feature in any follow-up programme unless BBC England fancy making the documentary.

A quick mention regarding that BBC Scotland special, one of the supposed ‘Away Days’ featured a game against England at Hampden Park back in June 2017.

Firstly that doesn’t make sense, as it was a ‘Home Day’ and secondly, despite Leigh Griffiths scoring two late free-kicks against Joe Hart to take a lead, Harry Kane equalised to give both teams a share of the points.

Obviously the Director of said programme wanted to try and take the rise out of the English, however, the fact that,

A- Scotland didn’t win and
2- It wasn’t an ‘Away Day’

Basically, just makes the Jocks look dafter than the English already think they are.

England took on Denmark in Frankfurt, with Gareth keeping the same starting eleven.

The decision to play Trent Alexander-Arnold in Midfield was and is wrong, Kobbie Mainoo should have been in there instead of TAA.

The problem is, Gareth Southgate is too stubborn so wouldn’t admit it was a mistake and kept Trent in against the Danes which again didn’t work but instead of changing the team at half-time, waited until 8 minutes into the 2nd-half to take TAA off, as not to admit the original decision was wrong.

Harry Kane scored the opener against Denmark, then as in the game against Serbia, England went backwards and allowed the Danes back in, who eventually equalised and with no further goals, both shared the points.

The point gained gave the Three Lions 4, which guaranteed progression to the last-16 but the performance against Denmark was worrying and GS needs to get a vast improvement for the Knockout Stage.

The fixture in Frankfurt evoked memories of a brilliant trip to Germany back in 2006 by John Newsome, Maxwell, Quiet Mike, CSI Jonny, Braveheart/Kylie and the Widster, where the Barnsley Boys saw England get a victory over Paraguay in the opening game of the World Cup at the Deutsche Bank Stadium.

That was 18 years ago.

A helluva lot of things have happened for all of us since then.

Out of the 24 teams in Germany, there were 3 that gained victories from the opening 2 games, with Spain, Portugal and the hosts getting 2 from 2 and then only Spain maintaining the 100% record after the final group fixture, with Germany drawing their finale against Switzerland and Portugal surprisingly losing the last one against Georgia.

In truth, there can only be 6 teams that maintain a perfect record from the Group Stage.

England faced Slovenia in the final game.

Gareth Southgate did eventually see sense and brought in Conor Gallagher in place of Trent Alexander-Arnold for the fixture against Slovenia, this being the only change to the two original starting eleven.

At half-time, GS finally introduced Kobbie Mainoo for Conor Gallagher which then established the starting eleven initially given by this EveryTip column.

Whilst a victory wasn’t achieved against Slovenia and most assuming the performance was abject at most, the opposition came with a game plan to prevent England from scoring and gaining a goalless draw that ultimately saw the Slovenians progress to the last-16 as one of the 4 best-placed teams finishing 3rd.

England haven’t been convincing but there is a lot of negativity surrounding the team in the tournament from folk who don’t understand football.

The 3 teams that England faced all came with the intention of stopping England from scoring, putting a combined 33 men behind the ball over the 3 Group Games.

In the last-16 fixture against Slovakia, England will improve and whilst no one can say where the Three Lions will finish, the ‘glass half empty’ brigade need to just take a step back and give a final appraisal once the tournament is over.

The ‘glass half full’ blokes (John Newsome and others) believe England will improve and go all the way.

One can guarantee that if (when) England reach at least the Semi-Finals, then it would be a case of,

‘We always believed in England, like you JB!’

John Newsome is referred to as JB, as in John Boy.

It is still a mystery as to why Jack Grealish is not in the England Squad and it is rumoured that even the 26 players that are in Germany are scratching their heads too.

However, that said, JG isn’t there so it’s up to the others to step up to the plate.

Judge England once the Euro’s are over, not after 3 games that ultimately, the Three Lions didn’t suffer a defeat and only conceded 1 goal.

Believe!

It’s now the last-16 dynamic of Euro’2024 which sees England face Slovakia and Scotland face Passport Control for the journey home.

John Newsome had a few mates over in Germany and asked one to send a Postcard back.

Having received the Card on the 25th, it did confirm the prediction that Scotland would, in fact, be home before the said Postcard.

The predictions for the last-16 are listed above with the projected Quarter-Final, Semi-Final and Final given, however, the Quarter’s onwards will be previewed by John Newsome and EveryTip once the lineup is confirmed on the 2nd of July.

Please come back and check after that date.

Whilst this EveryTip Preview wants to enjoy the Euro’s and not be too down on the occasion, there were a couple of sad untimely passings that surfaced over the opening weekend.

Kevin Campbell-

Back in April 1988, John Newsome worked for Swinton Insurance in Barnsley and had a couple of work colleagues who were into football as John was.

One of the lads, Vaughan, came from Doncaster and was a Rovers fan, Doncaster at the time had somehow reached the Final of the FA Youth Cup, which was against Arsenal and played over 2 legs, the first being at Belle Vue, the old Doncaster Rovers ground, with the second leg being at Highbury.

When one says ‘old’, Belle Vue was very!

Doncaster now play in a state-of-the-art modern football stadium just up the road from the old ground.

This EveryTip contributor had no affiliation with Doncaster Rovers but went along to the game at Belle Vue purely due to being a football fan and loved watching any kind of live action.

The initial game against Arsenal took place on a late April Friday Evening in the rain of a dismal Doncaster.

In the Arsenal lineup was a certain Kevin Campbell who at the time, would have been 18 years old.

Kevin tore the Youths of Doncaster to pieces and scored 3 times in around half an hour eventually seeing the Gunners get a 1st-leg lead by a 5-0 scoreline.

Doncaster did gain some sort of credibility in the away leg at Highbury getting a draw by a 1-1 score, however, the damage had already been done by KC up in Yorkshire.

John Newsome is the same age as Kevin Campbell and still remembers the wet night stood on the Terraces of Belle Vue back in April 1988, as if it was a couple of weeks ago.

Kevin played for Arsenal, Nottingham Forest, Trabzonspor, Everton, West Bromwich Albion and Cardiff and scored goals in every shirt.

Rest In Peace Kevin Campbell.

One of the biggest upsets in the history of the Euro Championship was the victory by Denmark in 1992.

The Danes didn’t initially qualify for the tournament held in Sweden, however, took the place of Yugoslavia whose Country was in conflict between the different constitutions.

Yugoslavia split up into 6 Nations, those being Bosnia Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia and Slovenia.

Croatia, Serbia and Slovenia all qualified for this tournament in Germany, which in itself, is a marvellous achievement for the former Yugoslavians.

Back in 1990, Yugoslavia, under the leadership of Ivica Osim, made it to the Quarter-Finals of the World Cup in Italy.

After finishing 2nd behind West Germany in the Group Stage, Yugoslavia faced Spain in the last-16 knockout.

Despite the fighting back in the Country of Yugoslavia, the football team, under the guidance of Ivica, who was a Bosnian and had players from all of the 6 countries that were part of the old Yugoslavia, united on the pitch and gained a victory over the Spaniards, setting up a Quarter-Final tie against Argentina and Diego Maradona.

Yugoslavia were reduced to 10 men after just half an hour of play when Refik Šabanadžović was shown a 2nd Yellow Card and the subsequent Red, within the space of 7 minutes, the ultimate Red for kicking lumps out of Diego.

Despite playing the rest of the game with 10 men, the Yugoslavs held on for a draw by a 0-0 score.

Following the subsequent 30 minutes of Extra-Time, the game went to a penalty shootout, which did see the enigmatic Mr Maradona miss his spot-kick.

Unfortunately, the current Serbian Manager Dragan Stojković, Dragoljub Brnović and Faruk Hadžibegić, also missed their kicks along with Diego and Pedro Troglio, however, the 3 that the Argentinians converted meant that Yugoslavia were out.

Ivica Osim held the Nation together for a brief time and gave the folk back home, in a Country that was in turmoil, a couple of weeks of relief from the fighting.

Yugoslavia eventually disbanded and as mentioned, became the 6 Nations of Bosnia Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia and Slovenia.

Unfortunately, Father Time has caught up with Croatia’s Golden Generation who were heading for the last-16 Knockout Stage but conceded a last-gasp goal against Italy in the final round of the Group Games, which ultimately ended their campaign in this year’s tournament.

It was then left to Serbia and Slovenia, who were both in England’s Group to progress, however, Serbia were eliminated after suffering a defeat against England and draws against Slovenia and Denmark.

Slovenia, who put 11 men behind the ball against the Three Lions, somehow managed to make the last-16, as a ‘Best Third Place Team’, which left just one of the Balkan States of the former Yugoslavia, in this year’s Euro’s, with Serbia and Croatia on their way home.

Sadly, Ivica Osim passed away in 2022 following a long illness.

Rest In Peace Ivica.

Another Country that the older listeners will remember is Czechoslovakia, who themselves split up around the same time as Yugoslavia, however, this time peacefully, becoming the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Both were in Germany, however, it was only Slovakia that progressed, with the Czech Republic going home.

On the same day that the tragic news came through of Kevin Campbell’s passing, it was also confirmed that the Millwall and Montenegro Goalkeeper Matija Sarkic sadly passed away aged 26.

Rest In Peace Matija Sarkic.

As this is an English Premier League prediction site, it would be remiss of John not to include a little taster for the new 2024/25 Season that kicks off over the weekend of the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th of August, with the opening fixture being at Old Trafford, where Manchester United host Fulham on Friday Night Football.

There was speculation that Erik Ten Hag was on his way to the Manchester Job Centre, however, after United somehow gained a victory over Man City in the FA Cup, the hierarchy were in a predicament and have decided to give ETH another chance, well at least for the opening 5 or 6 games.

If those fixtures don’t go well for United, the cancelled appointment at the Job Centre will be rearranged.

The newly promoted clubs, Ipswich and Leicester have a home fixture with Ipswich hosting Liverpool (now under the guidance of Arne Slot after Jurgen’s departure) and Leicester seeing Tottenham visit the King Power.

The 3rd promoted team, Southampton have an away day with Russell Martin’s Saints travelling the length of the country up to Newcastle.

The opening weekend 2024/25 Premier League fixtures-

Friday 16th of August-

Manchester United v Fulham

Saturday 17th of August-

Ipswich v Liverpool
Arsenal v Wolves
Everton v Brighton
Newcastle v Southampton
Nottingham Forest v Bournemouth
West Ham v Aston Villa

Sunday 18th of August-

Brentford v Crystal Palace
Chelsea v Man City

Monday 19th of August-

Leicester v Tottenham

There will be more from John Newsome and EveryTip at the beginning of August, once the dust of the Euro’s has settled but there isn’t any harm in getting the juices flowing for the upcoming season in the best league in the World, the English Premier League.

Daylight turns to moonlight and I’m at my best.

Praising the way it all works and gazing upon the rest.

The cool before the warm, the calm after the storm.

Oh the cool before the warm, the calm after the storm.

I wish to stay forever, letting this be my food.

Oh but I’m caught up in a whirlwind and my ever-changing moods.

Bitter turns to sugar, some call a passive tune but the day things turn sweet for me won’t be too soon.

Oh the hush before the silence, the winds after the blast.

The hush before the silence, the winds after the blast.

I wish we’d moved together, this time the bosses sued.

Oh but we’re caught up in the wilderness and an ever-changing mood.

Teardrops turn to children, who’ve never had the time.

To commit the sins they pay for through, another’s evil mind.

The love after the hate, the love we leave too late, the love after the hate, the love we leave too late.

I wish we’d wake up one day and everyone feel moved, oh but we’re caught up in the dailies and an ever-changing mood.

Evil turns to statues and masses form a line but I know which way I’d run to if the choice was mine.

The past is our knowledge, the present our mistake and the future we always leave too late.

I wish we’d come to our senses and see there is no truth, oh in those who promote the confusion for this ever-changing mood, yeah.
