South Africa upset the odds to book their place in the knockout phase of a FIFA World Cup for the first time in their history.
Bafana Bafana were sitting at the foot of Group A with 1 point needing to beat South Korea to progress.
Thapelo Maseko’s snapshot just after the hour mark, was enough to give South Africa the victory over South Korea from a 1-0 scoreline and elevate the Africans into 2nd-place and a knockout game against Canada.

Canada still qualified after the defeat against Switzerland on Wednesday, however, Jesse Marsch’s team ultimately finished 2nd in Group B, which meant that the Canadians will have to venture into the USA to play this last-32 tie.
After conceding 2 Swiss goals, Promise David scored in the 76th minute, to halve the deficit, however, Promise’s goal was ultimately, just a consolation, leaving Canada with a defeat against Switzerland from a 2-1 scoreline.
The lad did promise to score.
The Canadians will relish the trip to California to face South Africa for a place in the last-16.

After an opening game draw against Morocco, Brazil have won back-to-back games against Haiti and Scotland by the same 3-0 scoreline.
Vinicius Junior scored the opening 2-goals against Scotland in Miami on Wednesday Night, with Matheus Cunha adding a 3rd to give the Samba Boys the win over the Jocks and Top Group C.
The Brazilian Superstar Neymar finally saw some game time, coming on as a substitute in the 76th minute.
There were limited flashes of brilliance from the ex-Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain player, who was making his first appearance for Brazil since October 2023.
Neymar’s time will no doubt come in the knockout stages of the tournament.
Japan confirmed 2nd place status in Group F, following a draw against Sweden on Friday.
Celtic’s Daizen Maeda scored for Japan early in the 2nd-half to give the Japanese a lead.
However, that lead didn’t last long with Newcastle’s Anthony Elanga equalising for Sweden 6 minutes later.
That was the end of the goals leaving both with a point from a draw by a 1-1 score.
Japan finished 2nd with 5 points, 2 points behind the Netherlands.
Sweden finished 3rd with 4 points and are one of the ‘best-ranked 3rd place teams’.
Brazil are Odds On favourites to beat Japan and it could be considered foolish to think Japan will win, however, Japan have only lost 3 games out of the last 30, with 21 wins and 6 draws coming from the others, so don’t rule out anything and the Japanese could easily get a draw and then it’s the ‘penalty shootout Gods’ that will decide the outcome.

Germany had already qualified for this last-32 game, regardless of what happened against Ecuador in New York on Thursday.
As it turned out, despite Leroy Sane scoring in the 2nd minute, Ecuador quickly equalised to take both teams in level at the break.
Ecuador then scored a 2nd in the 77th minute to ultimately inflict a defeat on the Germans from a 2-1 scoreline.
As mentioned, Germany had already topped Group E, so Julian Nagelsmann had the opportunity to make a few changes and give some of the fringe players a runout.
Germany should improve for this last-32 fixture.
Paraguay gained a point from a draw by a 0-0 score against Australia in the final Group D fixture.
Both teams knew that a draw would be good enough to qualify, even though Paraguay finished 3rd in the Group with the same 4 points as Australia but below on goal difference.
Four points were enough to be one of the 8 ‘best-ranked 3rd place teams’ leaving the Paraguayans with this tricky last-32 game against Germany.

The Netherlands confirmed their last-32 status by finishing Top of Group F with 7 points, following a comfortable victory over Tunisia from a 3-1 scoreline.
The Tunisians scored an Own Goal after just 3 minutes, to give the Netherlands an early lead.
Sunderland’s Brian Brobbey scored his 3rd goal of the tournament in the 7th minute which meant that Holland were in front at the break.
Tunisia did pull a goal back in the 54th minute to halve the deficit, however, Brighton’s Jan Paul Van Hecke scored the Netherlands 3rd, just after the hour mark and with no further goals, the win was in the bag.
There will be some mismatches in this last-32 knockout stage, with a lot of the Group Winners, facing a ‘best-ranked 3rd place team’, however, the Netherlands v Morocco will not be one of those and should offer up a cracker of a game.
Morocco finally overcame Haiti in Atlanta on Wednesday gaining a victory from a 4-2 scoreline.
One says ‘finally’ as the Haitians took the lead twice in the 1st-half, with Achraf Hakimi and Ismael Saibari having to score for Morocco to level the game at the break.
Soufiane Rahimi scored in the 78th minute to put Morocco in front before Gessime Yassine rounded off the goals to give the Moroccans the win to finish 2nd with the same 7 points as Brazil but with a slightly inferior goal difference.
This game could easily finish in a draw then a penalty shootout, to decide who goes through.

Ivory Coast confirmed their last-32 status with a convincing victory over Curacao in Philadelphia on Thursday.
A goal in each half, from the ex-Arsenal Striker Nicolas Pepe, gave Côte d’Ivoire the win from a 2-0 scoreline, leaving the Ivory Coast with the same 6 points as Germany but finishing 2nd on the head-to-head basis, having lost to the Germans, to set up this last-32 knockout game against Norway.
Ståle Solbakken made a number of changes to his starting lineup for the game against France, leaving Erling Haaland and Martin Odegaard out of the eleven and not selecting them to participate from the bench.
After conceding 2 French goals, the Rangers Midfielder Thelo Aasgaard scored for Norway within a minute of France’s 2nd.
That was the first goal scored at a World Cup by a player from Rangers, since Denmark’s Brian Laudrup in the France’98 tournament.
Crystal Palace’s Jorgen Strand Larsen had the chance to make it 3-2 when Norway were awarded a penalty just after the restart, however, the French Goalkeeper saved Jorgen’s tame shot.
France then scored a late 4th to inflict the defeat on Norway’s reserves from a 4-1 scoreline.
Ståle Solbakken did know that Norway had qualified, so maybe resting Erling and Martin will turn out to be a master stroke, however, to lose a game to anyone by a 4-1 score, can’t be good for morale.

France became 1 of only 3 teams to have a 100% record of 3 wins from 3 in the Group Stage, following a convincing victory over Norway in Boston on Friday.
Mexico and Argentina being the others.
In truth, it was a Norwegian team that had rested a few players, with Erling Haaland and Martin Odegaard staying on the bench throughout.
That wasn’t any concern of France, who can only beat the team put in front of them.
Ousmane Dembele scored a stunning 1st-half hat-trick to give the French a lead at the break.
Norway did score to halve the deficit immediately after Ousmane’s 2nd.
Norway were given the chance to make it 3-2 after being awarded a penalty early in the 2nd-half, however, Crystal Palace’s Jorgen Strand Larsen saw his tame spot-kick saved by Mike Maignan, being the first Goalkeeper to save a penalty at this tournament.
Desire Doue added a 4th for the French in the 94th minute to give Didier Deschamps’ team the win from a 4-1 scoreline.
As mentioned, that left France at the summit of Group I with 9 points from 3 wins and sets up this stunning tie against Graham Potter’s Sweden.
Sweden gained a point from a draw by a 1-1 score, against Japan in their final Group F fixture.
After a goalless 1st-half, Japan scored the opener in the 56th minute.
Newcastle’s Anthony Elanga scored an equaliser 6 minutes later, giving Anthony his 2nd goal of the tournament.
With no further goals, both teams shared the points, leaving Sweden with 4 points and one of the ‘best-ranked 3rd place teams’ to set up this clash against one of the favourites.

Mexico completed their Group A stage with a convincing victory over the Czech Republic, leaving the Mexicans with an 100% record of 3-wins and 9 points.
After a goalless 1st-half against the Czechs, goals from Mateo Chavez
Garcia, Julian Quinones and Alvaro Fidalgo, gave Mexico the win from a 3-0 scoreline and in the process, sent the Czech Republic home.
Mexico will be a tough ask for anyone considering the last-32 and last-16 games will be in the Azteca Stadium.
Ecuador finished 3rd in Group E following a Loss, a Draw and a Win, the win coming against Germany in their final game.
Nilson Angulo scored for Ecuador in the 9th minute to equalise an earlier German goal, leaving both teams level at half-time.
It was then left to Gonzalo Plata to score the winner in the 77th minute to give Ecuador a famous victory over Germany from a 2-1 scoreline.
That gave the Ecuador team 4 points and made them one of the 8 ‘best-ranked 3rd place teams’.
This game, like potentially so many of the last-32 fixtures, could finish in a draw and a penalty shootout.

John Newsome will always back England and is someone who is never negative, it’s always ‘coming home’, however, one’s not sure Thomas Tuchel knows his best eleven.
TT has made a big error not taking Trent Alexander Arnold and England are missing the mavericks such as Cole Palmer and Phil Foden.
Once again, it’s another England Manager who had the opportunity to give the English Nation something to get behind but has been ‘glass half empty than full’.
Anyway, enough of the moaning, at least England are not Scotland.
Thomas picked the ex-Liverpool Centre Back (note Centre Back) Jarrell Quansah as the Right Back due to an injury to Reece James, which happens, injuries occur, however, Trent Alexander Arnold would have been the ideal replacement for Reece, not a guy who is a natural Centre Back.
Have a guess where Jarrell currently ply’s his trade?
That’s right Germany, the home of Thomas Tuchel.
As it turned out Jarrell got injured himself, so TT had to send on Djed Spence who should have started in the first place.
There was talk from the pundits (so-called) that Thomas Tuchel is ‘managing Djed’s game time’!
What does that actually mean?
The Tottenham guy played 10 minutes against Croatia and 66 minutes against Ghana, those good at Math will deduce, that is 76 minutes of game time before the Panama fixture.
Djed Spence is 25 years old, ‘managing game time!’
He should be able to play 3 games a day!
Against Ghana, TT chose Djed as the Left Back and dropped Nico O’Reilly, as if the Manager is some sort of genius.
The lad is a natural Right Back and should have started against Panama.
At least Thomas brought Nico back in.
After a turgid 1st-half display against Panama that produced, well nothing really, England stepped up the pace in the 2nd-half, with goals from Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane, giving the Three Lions the (eventual) victory over Panama from a 2-0 scoreline.
At the halfway point, Croatia were beating Ghana, which meant that England were 2nd in the Group L table, however, the win, put TT’s Three Lions back at the summit to set up this last-32 tie against DR Congo.
England have to improve so it’s hoped Mr Tuchel has some new plans up his sleeve.

In the end, Croatia beat Ghana 2-1, which meant Croatia finished 2nd with 6 points and Ghana, with 4 points, finished as one of the ‘best-ranked 3rd place teams’.
At least ones not Scotland, who were eventually put out of their misery on Sunday, following Croatia’s victory over Ghana, which confirmed Scotland’s exit from the tournament and failing to reach the knockout stages (again!)
In a revamped World Cup that made it virtually impossible not to qualify for the last-32, Scotland have achieved the ‘impossible’ and have been eliminated, after finishing outside of the 8 ‘best-ranked 3rd place teams’.
Added to that, the Scottish FA (Football Association) had extended Steve Clarke’s contract for another 4-years!

Whilst writing this, the dour Mr Clarke, has resigned from his position as the Scotland Manager.
‘Dour’ means someone or something that is relentlessly severe, stern, gloomy, or sullen in manner or appearance.
It can also refer to someone who is obstinate, unyielding, and determined.
Often used in a Scottish context to describe a person who is stubbornly tenacious and refuses to yield, even when facing difficult circumstances.
One feels sorry for the Tartan Army!
DR Congo beat Uzbekistan by a 3-1 score to finish as one of the ‘best-ranked 3rd place teams’.
Newcastle’s Yoane Wissa scored twice (1 from the penalty spot) with Fiston Mayele scoring in between Yoane’s 2.

Senegal lost their first 2 Group games against France and Norway but sneaked into the last-32 following a victory over Iraq from a 5-0 scoreline.
Sunderland’s Habib Diarra, Crystal Palace’s Ismaila Sarr, Papa Gueya (2) and Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye with the goals.

The USA had confirmed themselves as winners of Group B and were thought to get a win over Turkey in the final game, however, the Turks surprised the Americans by getting a victory in Los Angeles on Friday from a 3-2 scoreline.
Turkey, literally had nothing but pride to play for, as they were guaranteed to finish at the bottom and had already packed their bags for the plane journey home.
Mauricio Pochettino rested a few of the USA players but the reserves should still have been strong enough to beat a poor set of Turkey’s.
Auston Trusty scored first for the Americans after 3 minutes, which was equalised by the Turks 7 minutes later.
Turkey then scored a 2nd to lead at the break.
Sebastian Berhalter scored an equaliser for the USA just after the restart and when the game looked to be heading for a draw, Turkey scored the winner in the 98th minute to inflict the defeat on the hosts from a 3-2 scoreline.
As mentioned, the USA had already qualified for the last-32 as Group B winners and now set up this tricky game against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
It’s rumoured, that on Thanksgiving Day in November, there will be a record number of Turkey’s killed and eaten by the Americans.
A bit of Cranberry sauce, lovely jubbly.
Bosnia and Herzegovina finished off their Group B games with a convincing victory over Qatar, leaving B and H with 4 points from a Draw, a Loss and a Win.
That left Bosnia and Herzegovina in 3rd place with the same 4 points as Canada but below on goal difference.
Which is now the second criteria of how a Group position is decided behind ‘head-to-head’ with ‘goals scored’ being the third criteria.
Four points were enough to finish as a ‘best-ranked 3rd place team’.

Rafik Belghali got the 1st goal, with the ex-Leicester and Man City Forward Riyad Mahrez scoring the other 2 to earn Algeria a place in the knockout stage as one of the ‘best-ranked 3rd place team’.

The final fixture of the Group resulted in a draw by a 0-0 score, against Paraguay.
The game turned out to be an underwhelming contest that was a product of FIFA’s new format World Cup, with the result securing the Socceroos a 2nd consecutive knockout stage appearance and leaving La Albirroja as one of the ‘best-ranked 3rd placed teams’.
The Loveable OzScot and Son were in the USA as part of the Tartan Army who have seen their beloved Scotland team gloriously fail once again, however, the lad and Dad will be back in Ozland and no doubt will now be cheering on their 2nd team the ‘Socceroos’ which, in itself, is quite funny as it’s likely that Australia will be home after this last-32 game.
It is strange how the Loveable OzScot, who has lived in England for most of his life, doesn’t back the Three Lions and wants anyone and everyone to beat our great England team!

Egypt gained a point from a draw by a 1-1 score against Iran in Seattle on Friday/Saturday.
Mahmoud Saber scored for Egypt in the 5th minute, which was quickly equalised by Iran 9 minutes later.
Iran had missed a penalty just before the equaliser.
That was that for the remaining 75 minutes or so, however, Iran thought they had scored a winner in the 93rd minute and after celebrating wildly, even putting on some sunglasses, the dreaded VAR ruled the goal out for offside.
It was funny though, watching the celebrations, obviously not for Iran.
Iran failed to qualify as a ‘best-ranked 3rd place team’ on goal difference which did please Donald Trump.

Jordan did what Algeria and Austria couldn’t do and that was score a goal, to halve the deficit early in the 2nd-half.
It was then left to the Little Maestro Lionel Messi to round off the scoring, getting Argentina’s 3rd in the 80th minute.
That was Lionel’s 6th goal of the tournament.
As mentioned, only Mexico, France and Argentina have won all 3 games.
Cape Verde gained their 3rd draw of the tournament, getting a point against Saudi Arabia from a 0-0 scoreline.
That’s the 2nd 0-0 draw for Cabo Verde following the goalless stalemate against Spain.
The 3 points gained means Cape Verde finished 2nd behind Spain in Group H, which is a remarkable achievement for the New Boys.
