ITV are covering three meetings and eight races this week in the run-up to the big Ebor Meeting which starts at York on Wednesday so don’t expect to see trainers sending out their best horses this weekend as they will be saved for action at the Knavesmire for the big 4-day meeting.

For this Saturday’s Lucky Fifteen I will begin at Newmarket with the 2.35, the Mansionbet Grey Horse Handicap and here I can see no further than William Muir’s Mitrosonfire who has been winning Class 2 and 3 races since June- This step down to Class 4 at his preferred distance should be an easy step even though he comes up against his older contenders for the first time.

The 2.55 at Newbury is the BetVictor Handicap and Clive Cox’s Aratus will be highly fancied here. But I will oppose him with William Haggas’s Ajyaall who drops down in class after being highly tried and performing well in two contests at York this season.

Moving north to Ripon, the 3.10 is the William Hill Silver Trophy Handicap which is a consolation race for the main attraction- St Wilfred. Here, I like the look of Ben Haslam’s Fortamour who won over this course and distance a fortnight ago, he can defy a penalty.

The big race, the William Hill Great St Wilfred Handicap is at 3.45 and Tim Easterby’s Staxton bids for a repeat after last year’s victory. He must have every chance even though he has 7lbs more on his back than last year, but I have a liking for his stablemate Boardman who rattled up a hat-trick in May and has been highly tried since. He may get back to winning ways.
