The big Kempton Boxing Day meeting takes place on Sunday, and ITV are covering four races with three Grade 1’s, including King George. This is backed up with a Grade 3 from Wetherby which could be the most competitive race of the day, so here are my thoughts for this week’s Lucky Fifteen.

Saturday Lucky Fifteen
1.20 Newbury. Solo
2.30 Newbury. Soaring Glory
3.05 Newbury. Minella Indo
2.10 Wetherby. Fortescue

I wish all punters everywhere a very Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year, Good Luck Everyone.

The first televised race from Kempton is the 1.30, a Novices Handicap Chase where Nicky Henderson’s Bothwell Bridge looks likely to go off favourite after winning at Sandown earlier this month.

The top weight is Donald McCain’s Minella Trump who is unbeaten this season in seven contests and even with all his weight is sure to go close.

Paul Nicholls’s Danny Kirwan is fancied after his fine second at Cheltenham in October but I think he would need to show improvement on that to feature. However, I like the look of another Nicholls runner, Solo, who has plenty of weight but won a Grade 2 race here at Kempton last year. This season, he was desperately unlucky at Ascot in October when only beaten a nose and ran well at Sandown until making a mistake at the last cost him victory. He can gain recompense here.

At 2.30, we have the Christmas Hurdle and this is supposed to be a shoe-in for Epatante who won this in 2019. But she doesn’t seem the horse she was then. She was well beaten at Punchestown and Cheltenham in March and April but had a great battle to dead heat with Not So Sleepy in the Fighting Fifth at Newcastle last month.

But Hughie Morrison’s Not So Sleepy does not seem a Grade 1 horse despite that dead heat and as a 9-year-old, his best years could be behind him. So I will look elsewhere, Goshen has disappointed at the top level.

Tritonic has his best years to come after his fine victory at Ascot last week.

My liking is for Jonjo O’Neill’s Soaring Glory. He won well at Ascot in October then disappointed at Newbury the following month when making a mistake at the second last. I think he can improve on that effort.

The big race is at 3.05 the King George VI Chase where Paul Nicholls has a particularly strong hand with last year’s winner Frodon and the 2018/19 winner Clan Des Obeaux.

Frodon was given an easy lead last year and pinched the race. I can’t see him getting away with that style of running again despite getting away with it once again in Down Royal last time.

Clan Des Obeaux won well at Punchestown in April, but I am not sure about him coming back here to try and win this for the third time without a prep run is a good idea. Nicky Henderson’s Chantry House has been showing fine form including winning a match at Aintree last month but this is a big ask.

If Henry de Bromhead’s Minella Indo brings his A-game here, he can take this. His magnificent effort to win the the Gold Cup at Cheltenham was a fine training achievement. He disappointed last time at Down Royal but he will have come on for that and if he brings his Cheltenham form here to Kempton, he can take this.

Finally, there is an exciting handicap at Wetherby at 2.10, the Rolland Meyrick Handicap Chase. Fergal O’Brien has the favourite here with Silver Hallmark who is lightly raced and has not been seen since running 4th at Carlisle in October.

Philip Kirby’s Top Ville Ben won this in 2019 but has not shown that sort of form lately.

Good Boy Bobby ran a fine second for trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies at Newcastle last month but perhaps needs to show a little more.

Brian Ellison’s Windsor Avenue is fancied but he hasn’t shown the sort of form to take this throughout his career.

The one I do like is Henry Daly’s Fortescue. The stable is firing on all cylinders at the moment and he can carry on the good work. He was hampered last time at Newbury but he will have come on from that run and can go well here.
