Wonderful to see customers back at racecourses this week, I won’t say crowds because that is not quite what we have got but it’s a start. We have another great Saturday of racing to look forward to with two televised meetings at Aintree and Sandown.

The Aintree card features the Grand National course for the first time this season and we will see horses run over the big fences involved such as Becher’s Brook and the Chair. There are four televised races, two of which involve jumping the big obstacles. Former Gold Cup hero, Native River, also goes here over the Mildmay Fences in a race he won last year. The Many Clouds Chase and Colin Tizzard will be hoping for a repeat performance.

The other meeting on the day is at Sandown with another four races on offer, including the Tingle Creek Chase, which sees the seasonal reappearance of the great Altior- he faces a strong field, including the Paul Nicholls youngster Greaneteen. All this makes for an exciting afternoon and here are my thoughts for this week’s Lucky Fifteen.

Saturday Lucky Fifteen
3.00 Sandown. Pobbles Bay
3.35 Sandown. Rosie And Millie
1.30 Aintree. Ramses de Teillee

Beginning at Sandown with the 3.00, the Betfair Exchange Back And Lay London National Handicap Chase over 3m 5f. The current favourite here is Venetia Williams’s Cloudy Glen who won last month at Fontwell on heavy ground. He won easily that day beating Doing Fine into third but he wants plenty of giving in the ground and has top weight.

Caroline Bailey’s Crosspark looks to be regaining some of his old form of a couple of years ago with a couple of runner-up places to his credit already this season. But I still feel he is not to be trusted and he has plenty of weight as well.

Classic Ben ran a fine second at Exeter last time for trainer Stuart Edmunds where he rallied on the run-in, but he steps up in class here. I give another chance to Pobbles Bay who I tipped at Haydock a fortnight ago. Evan Williams’s gelding fell at halfway in that contest but I judge him on his previous run, a second at Aintree and with the better ground at Sandown in his favour, he can put in a good performance.

The Betfair Exchange December Handicap Hurdle is at 3.35, so it will probably be run in the dark. Top weight and well-fancied is Paul Nicholls’s Solo who ran well when fourth in a Grade 2 race at Wincanton at the beginning of the month. However, he has plenty of weight here.

Another Nicholls runner is Eglantine Du Seuil who was a well-beaten favourite last time out on the same card. He is best watched here.

Jane Williams’s Galice Macalo and Dr Richard Newland’s Benson have both won their last two races but this is a major step up in class for the pair of them.

The current favourite is Nicky Henderson’s Mister Coffey after his latest win here at Sandown at the beginning of last month but he steps up in class and runs here in Listed company. One who has run in that grade is Michael Scudamore’s Rosie And Millie, who comes here on a handy mark and ran a fine second last time at Ascot where she was only headed over the last. She can go one better here.

Moving north to Aintree, we have what looks like an exciting renewal of the William Hill Becher Handicap Chase- a 3m 2f race over the famous National fences.

One of the favourites here is Robert Walford’s Walk In The Mill who goes for a hat-trick in the race after winning the last two renewals but he has 8lbs more than he has ever had to carry before and this may be a problem.

Tom Lacey’s Kimberlite Candy was second in this last year and has only been seen once on a racecourse since. That was a winning appearance at Warwick back in January. I have some reservations about him due to his record when racing fresh and I feel he must be difficult to get right.

Paul Nicholls saddles the top weight Yala Enki who has been a prolific winner in the past. He was just touched off last time at Cheltenham but he has too much weight here. The horse who got the better of him that day was Ramses de Teillee and David Pipe will have him spot-on for this, he will go very close.

Ben Pauling’s Le Breuil ran seventh in this last year and has not tasted victory since the amateur riders chase in March 2019. So I must pass him over.

Nick Williams’s Coo Star Sivola ran a fair fifth at Bangor last month in what was his first run for 20 months and is probably best watched here, as even though he will have come on for that run, I just give the nod to Ramses de Teillee.

Finally, at 3.15 we have the William Hill Grand Sefton Handicap Chase, a 2m 5f contest again over the National fences. I am really looking forward to seeing Nicky Henderson’s Might Bite take on these obstacles. He showed last time out at Ascot that he still enjoys his racing but he may not have the speed of some of these.

Paul Nicholls has a couple of entries the best of which is probably Modus who won here at the last meeting in early November but he has risen in the weights since then. The second that day was Phillip Hobbs’s Springtown Lake who is now 10lbs better off and his previous victory at Warwick was gained easily. He should make the frame again.

Alex Hales’s Huntsman Son was a fine winner of a Listed race at Wetherby last time but he may not get the good ground he likes.

Senior Citizen turns out for Alan King and he has run well in his two outings this year but he is another who would like better going. The trainer also runs Dingo Dollar and says he has had a wind op since his last run over hurdles at Uttoxeter. He was being aimed at the Topham until that meeting was cancelled and he looks my idea of the winner.
