Saturday’s Horse Racing Preview & Tips- 22nd July 2023 – Seymour Biz

This week ITV are covering a run-of-the-mill meeting at Newbury with four races being televised from the Berkshire course. They have also reverted to showing us some summer jump racing from Market Rasen with three races on offer one of which is a Class 1 Premier Handicap.

Also, they are crossing the Irish Sea to cover the Irish Oaks from the Curragh which looks another A P O’Brien benefit with him having half the field running in his name.

So some pretty meagre fare this week but I have trawled through the fields to try and find some value and here are my thoughts.

Saturday Lucky Fifteen
2.25 Newbury. Nathanael Greene
3.00 Newbury. Rohaan
3.35 Newbury. Rosario
3.15 Market Rasen. La Domaniale

Beginning at Newbury with the 2.25 with the Mettal UK Handicap a 2m 1/2f contest. One of the joint top weights here is Roger Varian’s Postileo who won at Hamilton in May over 1m 5f. He is trying this distance for the first time.

James Fanshawe’s Novel Legend won comfortably over this distance here at Newbury back in April. He has since been tried over longer distances and reverts back in trip here.

Lower in the handicap Jim Goldie runs Geremia who won a fortnight ago at Ayr. He is upped in class here but can be placed of his low weight.

But I prefer William Haggas’s Nathanael Greene who ran a fine fourth at Newcastle earlier this month and was in a similar position at Goodwood in May. He can make the step up.

The bet365 Hackwoood Stakes is at 3.00. This is a Group 3 contest run over 6 furlongs. Michael Dods’Commanche Falls comes here after a fine victory at the Curragh earlier this month prior to that he ran third at York in May and had Annaf and Diligent Harry behind him. I expect him to confirm those placings.

Ralph Beckett has secured the services of Frankie Dettori to ride Lezoo but this Group 1 winner has not shown that sort of form so far this season finishing unplaced in both her runs. She benefits from the fillies allowance and is sure to go close.

Another who has not shown top form this season is David Evans’s Rohaan whose last three wins have come at Ascot. Last week at that course, he was badly drawn on the stand side but did well to finish 7th. He can gain recompense here.

At 3.35 it is the Weatherby Super Sprint Stakes, a 5-furlong dash for 2-year-olds. Looking at past renewals a high draw is imperative here and I will concentrate on those filling those berths.

The current favourite and drawn 18 is William Haggas’s Relief Rally who ran a fine second in a Group 2 at Ascot last month. He is sure to go well.

Charles Hills’s Call Glory is drawn 19 and claimed a fine victory at Goodwood last month when he won comfortably.

Rosario won on his only outing for trainer Roger Teal which was at Ffos Las in a lowly contest but it certainly showed his potential, he is drawn 20.

Finally, Richard Hannon’s Ziggy’s Phoenix is drawn 21. She had a couple of wins in the spring but has been unable to get her head in front in the Listed company since.

I consider the winner will come from this quadruple of runners and I take Teal’s Rosario to make the step up in class.

Finally, I look to the jumps to provide the last leg of the Lucky Fifteen with the 3.15 at Market Rasen the Unibet Summer Plate Handicap Chase run over 2m 5f. Top weight is Peter Bowen’s Francky Du Berlais who won this last year and returns to defy top weight once again. He has had a prep run here last month since running in the Grand National and he has every chance.

Emma Lavelle’s Hang In There ran fifth here last month but he won five times last season and cannot be discounted.

Lavelle has another runner with Killer Clown but he proved expensive to follow last season.

Peter Bowen’s Courtland has won three times already this year, including over this course and distance earlier this month but this is a step up in class.

I like the look of Jonjo O’Neill’s La Domaniale who was a triple winner last season and who won at Aintree in May. She has won at this grade and can add this to her list of victories.
