With Haydock being abandoned this Saturday, I will concentrate on meetings we know are going ahead at Beverley and Chester, and here are my thoughts for the three races at Beverley and one at Chester. I don’t know if the Haydock card will be moved to Carlisle at this stage, so I will give you my thoughts on races we know are going ahead.

Beginning at Beverley with the 1.45, the Napoleons Casino Hull Handicap, a Class 4 race run over 1m 2f. Top weight is Andrew Balding’s Urban Glimpse, who has been running in better company than he meets here and filled a couple of runners-up spots last season. He finished down the field in a Class 2 on his seasonal reappearance at Goodwood earlier this month. A better run is expected.
Saeed Bin Suroor’s Desert Shadow was disqualified from first place here at Beverley last August. He had shown little this term until running second at Redcar last week.
David O’Meara’s Mafting won at Redcar last month and ran second at Doncaster earlier this month. His latest run at York was disappointing.
Down at the bottom of the handicap is Sam England’s Coolree, who has won four times at Beverley. Two of those wins have come this month, and he is deservedly upped in class here.
I prefer Charlie Johnson’s Sir William, who ran consistently well last season, winning just once. Earlier this month, he ran a good second at Windsor in a Class 4 and can go one better here.
The 2.15 is the Hilary Needler Trophy EBF Fillies’ Conditions Stakes, which is a Class 2 race run over the sharp 5 furlongs. There are some classy fillies on show here, with several seeing a racecourse for the first time. Richard Fahey’s Crystal Queen was a well-beaten second on her only outing at Ayr last week. A better run is hoped for.
Karl Burke’s Kodi Bear Light won at Thirsk this month and looks to improve on that victory here. Similarly, with Kevin Ryan’s Moonlight Tango, who won a Class 4 here at Beverley at the beginning of this month.
Charlie Johnson’s The Can Can Queen won a Class 4 at Ripon a fortnight ago and is another hoping to step up in class. Of the debutants, Archie Watson’s Cosmic Mystery cost 220,000Gns as a 2-year-old, and Karl Burke’s Light Of Dawn was E625,000, so either of these has something to prove.
My preference is for Princesse d’Orange, who won here at Beverley in April for trainer David O’Meara, then contested a Listed race at York, where she took a keen hold in front to finish 5th. It is hoped she has learned from that outing.
The Beverley Two Year Old Trophy EBF Conditions Stakes is at 2.48, a Class 2 race run again over 5 furlongs. There are several winners amongst these colts, some of which have already been successful at this grade. Richard Fahey’s Big Cigar won a Class 4 on the all-weather at Newcastle a fortnight ago.
Kevin de Foy’s Napa won a Class 2 at Newmarket at the beginning of May and should go well here.
Nigel Tinkler’s Ronson won a Class 4 here at Beverley this month, and this is tougher.
Michael Dods’ Arapaho Gold won a lowly Class 5 at Thirsk at the beginning of this month. He ran green that day but still won by over 2 lengths.
Kevin Ryan runs Matteo, who won here at Beverley in April in a Class 5, coming home by almost 5 lengths. A bold run is expected.
Of the debutants, Michael Appleby’s Blue Pete cost 140,000Gns and is a half-brother to five winners. But Richard Hannon’s Cut A Dash is the one for me. He won a Class 2 at York earlier this month, beating a classy field by over 2 lengths. He could be a Group horse.
Moving to Chester and the 3.30 is the Virgin Bet Handicap, a Class 2 race run over 7 furlongs round the RooDee. Ralph Beckett runs Palmar Bay, who has run 4th on two occasions this season in Listed company, but he looks rather high in the weights.
Hugo Palmer’s Roman Dragon is a Chester specialist, having won here eight times but never over 7 furlongs.
Ian Williams’s Supido won here at the May meeting in a Class 2 and is sure to go well once again.
Archie Watson’s Element Of Fire has won three times on the all-weather but flopped somewhat on his latest run at Ascot.
Ian Williams’s Brighton Boy had a poor draw when beaten by Supido here earlier this month, but made up for that disappointment when winning at Thirsk a fortnight ago. He won here last September, so with a better draw, he can hit the frame.
I just prefer Roger Varian’s Bobby Bennu, who is a past Chester winner. This is his seasonal reappearance, and with a kind draw, he may just better Brighton Boy.
