Saturday’s Horse Racing Preview & Tips- 6th May 2023 – Seymour Biz

The jumps season is in the dim and distant past as we move onto 2000Gns Day. However, I would just like to look back at my results since New Year’s Day.

If you had backed all my bets in singles, you would have had a return of 146% from 45 selections. But if you had backed them in £1 Lucky Fifteens, they would have produced a profit of £440.75.

Everything reverts to nil as the flat starts in earnest with ITV covering five races from Newmarket, including the 2000Gns where Aidan O’Brien has the favourite with Auguste Rodin. But Andrew Balding’s Dewhurst winner Chaldean looks the pick of the home form if Frankie stays on board!

ITV are also slotting in a couple of handicaps- one each from Goodwood and Thirsk which should produce some value. So here we go with the 2023 flat season and my Lucky Fifteen selections. Good luck everyone!

Saturday Lucky Fifteen

Beginning at Newmarket with the 2.50 the Home Of Racing Handicap where Charles Hills’ Tanmawwy is likely to go off favourite. However his wins have come in lower-class races and I wasn’t impressed with his second at Newbury last month.

There are much classier horses in the race such as David O’Meara’s Summerghand but the triple Class 1 winner has plenty of weight.

Roger Teal’s Blackrod won this last year but has done nothing to catch the eye since.

I like Archie Watson’s Tabdeed who has not won since he was successful in a Group race in 2020. He has been highly tried since but returns to handicap company on a good mark and he is the selection.

At 3.25 it is the Suffolk Stakes, a Heritage Handicap run over 1m 1f. Ralph Beckett’s Jimi Hendrix won at Newbury last month but has moved up the handicap for that win.

John and Thady Gosden have Saga in the lineup but he failed to win last term and still looks too high in the weights.

Harry Eustace’s Turntable has won four times on the Rowley Mile in lower class races, this is tougher.

Jack Channon’s Majestic won here last September and ran a fine race in the Lincoln where he finished fourth on ground that didn’t suit him. He can improve on that placing here.

Moving south to Goodwood, the 3.05 is the William Hill Epic Value Handicap a 1m 2f contest. Jim Boyle’s Bad Company won at Epsom last month and he is capable of following up, but having to carry top weight is a problem.

Richard Hughes runs Aussie Banker who has finished runner up on his last two starts on the all-weather. He would need to show a major improvement to take this.

I cannot see any further than Charles Hills’ Maghlaak who won twice last season. His second win was here at Goodwood and this quirky course suits some horses and he could be one. He can take this on his seasonal reappearance.

My final selection is at Thirsk with the Vickers. Bet Thirsk Hunt Cup run over a mile.

Grant Tuer’s Skilled Warrior won on the all-weather at Newcastle last month but this is much tougher.

Billyb was consistent last term for trainer Ann Duffield finishing the season with a fine win at Southwell. He can be placed once again.

I also like Tim Easterby’s Cruyff Turn who has won twice at this level but his weight puts me off.

I prefer Tuer’s other runner The Turpinator who won first time out last year and can do so again, he is on a good mark and has a top class claimer aboard.
