Ascot Racecourse History

Ascot has come a long way. Its first race meeting took place in 1768. However, it did not draw much attention until 1807 when the organizers introduced the Gold Cup. Queen Anne officially launched the racecourse on which this event occurred in 1711.

She was riding from Windsor Castle when she stumbled upon an open area. She looked at it and said, “Ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch.” The same year, a thrilling horse race occurred on the newly opened racecourse.

The racecourse remained bare until 1793, when a Windsor builder, George Slingsby, constructed the first building. The building could house 1650 people, and racegoers would use it for the next five decades.

The parliament enacted an Act in 1813. This new piece of legislation allowed people to use Ascot Heath only as a racecourse. Since then, this racecourse has been home to the Royal Ascot Festival, which has only become bigger and better over the years.

The course features a straight mile, known for producing thrilling finishes, and a round course that accommodates longer races. Its configuration ensures a test of both speed and stamina, making it a favourite among jockeys and trainers.

Jumps Course

While Ascot primarily focuses on flat racing, the racecourse also caters to jump racing, ensuring a diverse range of racing events throughout the year. The jumps course features well-designed hurdles and fences, providing a challenging yet fair test for jump racing participants.
