Racecourse history

Racing in this region used to take place on the beaches, with a few contests being held infrequently. At the time, the prizes and facilities were modest. In fact, the Grandstand in use was temporary and was built by Mr Adamson, a local joiner. Mr Adamson charged people to use the Grandstand and set up the start and winning posts plus the judge’s box. Though not much was happening, they were good days for horse racers and horsegoers.

Racing was moved from the Redcar beaches in 870. Why? Jockey Club rules were implemented, which meant that horse racing organizers had to raise more cash to build a new venue. Money was raised from the admission fees.

The new course was constructed with hurdles and a parade ring. The course clerk, Thomas Dawson, was responsible for drainage, levelling the course, and returfing in spots that needed it. The new track was opened in 1872. With this official open day, Redcar is five years younger than modern Canada.

Now, the new course started without the Grandstand in 1875. The construction of the permanent Grandstand and the Stewards’ stand was finished with £2,650.

Another stand was built in 1877, and the onsite stables were constructed a year later to prevent the horses from moving during race days. The changes weren’t as big, but they were enough to impress a Bailey’s Magazine correspondent whose positivity helped put the course on the horse racing map.

But it has not always been rosy for the racecourse. On the contrary, racing on the Redcar racecourse was on hold during the world wars. During these times, the course was used as a training and army camp. As a result, the course was neglected.

After the Second World War, Major Leslie had a hard time improving the course. Petch and a team of dedicated and hardworking staff worked hard to improve the track’s condition. In the process, they made the Redcar racecourse the first racecourse to have CCTVs, a furlong post, and a timing clock. Redcar finally had a lot going on for itself for a small racecourse, plus a rich history.

Following the upgrades in facilities, Redcar’s popularity soared. To accommodate the increased number of visitors, Redcar management had to build a new grandstand in 1964, which is still used today. Petch retired as the manager in 1971 and was praised for turning the tides of the once insignificant course into one of the best.

Today, Redcar has some decent facilities, plus beaches nearby, making it one of the most beautiful and fun racecourses to visit.

The course

Flat Course

Redcar has a narrow and long course. Its shape is quite distinctive and allows it to host races that are a mile long on the straight track. For races longer than a mile, horses have to negotiate at least one sharp bend. The bottom bend is slightly tougher to negotiate than the top bend. Moreover, there are a couple of ridges that jockeys have to be wary of. However, the course is relatively fair, and jockeys can ride fast.

Online betting sites

Online betting has gained popularity over the past couple of decades. Partly because it offers convenience traditional betting shops don’t and partly because of the following:

  • Offers better odds – great odds provide you with an opportunity to win a lot of money. Online betting shops can afford better odds because they have fewer overheads than traditional betting shops
  • Privacy—Online betting shops have made great strides in security and keeping your identity safe. Aside from confirming your identity during the first withdrawal, they don’t ask for personal details. The use of cryptocurrencies further facilitates this level of privacy
  • Horse races to bet on – with traditional betting shops, you can only bet on local horse races available at the time. With online betting sites, you can place your bets on horse races across the globe
  • Cheaper – you can place your bets from anywhere in the world.  Since you don’t have to travel to the racecourse, you can save money, which you can opt to use for your bets

How to get to the racecourse

Car – the roads leading to the racecourse are well made, and there is free public parking on site. However, you should leave enough time for travel, especially during race days, as the roads can get busy. The SatNav code to the racecourse from Grandstand Enclosure is TS102FD; from Course Enclosure, it’s TS102AA.

Train—There are three main stations in the area. To travel by train, you’ll need to buy Redcar Central Station tickets.

Air – Middlesborough is the nearest airport to the course. It’s ten miles from the racecourse, so you’ll need a taxi.

Redcar racecourse final thoughts

The Redcar racecourse is a family-friendly and fun place to visit when races are on. The Grandstand is a favourite spot, offering a great atmosphere and view. With 18 days of flat racing between March and November, the racecourse caters to all types of racegoers. Whether you’re there in person or betting online, this racecourse should be on your to-do list for a great time.
