History
Horse events began in the 1700s. The first horse race at the current running track took place in 1811. The Blathwayt, a well-established family, organized this two-day meet. The event would go on for several decades, and consequently, the venue gained massive recognition.
Although the racecourse had shown immense potential among local enthusiasts, it broke into the limelight in 1953. Unfortunately, the racecourse was not in the headlines for good reasons. A gang was involved in a betting racket. They got an identical horse to replace the original horse and win the race. They interfered with the power supply after placing bets on the said horse. Amid the confusion, their horse won the race.
Shortly after, the irregular winning patterns came to the bookmaker’s attention. Luckily, the bookies caught the perpetrators. None of the gang members had received any winnings. Therefore, the bookmakers did not incur any losses.
The course is now home to a host of events. The owners of this racecourse have redeveloped and expanded it. The old grandstand now has an ultra-modern finish. In 2015, the Arena Racing Company pumped in millions of pounds to refurbish the Kelston Stand. Today, it offers unrivalled hospitality. Additionally, in 2016, the triple-decker Landridge Stand was completed. The racecourse now has a larger capacity, providing immense comfort to racegoers.
The Course
Bath Flat Course
The running track is about one mile and four furlongs. Its shape makes it easier for racegoers to view the action. What’s more intriguing is that the finishing post sits right before the main stand. The run towards the finish line is uphill and tremendously challenging.
This is the highest and most challenging flat course compared to other flat racecourses. However, this course does not have any watering facilities.
Main Racing Events at Bath
Landsdown Fillies’ Stakes
The Landsdown Fillies’ Stakes is one of the notable races here. This race is strictly for fillies aged three years and above. The race is about 5 furlongs and 10 yards long and takes place every year in April.
The race was first run in 1999. Today, it is a fan favourite that draws legions of fans to the racecourse.
Beckford Stakes
The Beckford Stakes is another incredible race-listed flat course race in England. Unlike the Lansdown Fillies’ stakes, this race is open to both mares and fillies.
The race is one mile and six furlongs long and has been held in October each year since 2006. It is a competitive race, and no horse has ever dominated it for a long time.
