History of the Racecourse

The first organized horse race in Haydock took place in 1899. Before this, the races took place in Newton-le-Willows. This was about two miles away from the current racetrack.

Lord Newton recognized the rising demand for horseracing and leased a staggering 127 acres of parkland in 1898. His dream was to open a grand racecourse that would take horseracing in North West England to the next level. And it came true when the Haydock Park racecourse opened its doors to the public.

The Old Newton Cup transitioned from its old venue to the Haydock Park racecourse. Thousands of racegoers were pouring into the racetrack, so the owners opened the Haydock Park Railway station to manage the traffic. By 1963, the economy had changed significantly, and the hard times led to the closure of this station.

The same year, the Manchester racecourse closed its doors. This meant that racegoers from Manchester had to travel to Haydock Park racecourse for their usual horseracing treat. Two years later, it started hosting the famous Lancashire Oaks.

The racecourse’s fortunes have only gotten better. Today, it is one of the best racetracks in the UK.

The Course

The Haydock racecourse is a versatile racetrack with a flat and jump course. It is home to a variety of flat races and steeplechases.

Flat Course

The Flat course is an oval track with several sharp bends. It is left-handed, and it’s about 12 furlongs long. The course has a straight track for short races. But the horses have to contend with challenging bends that require great skill and extra caution for longer races.

The flat race does not always favour fast runners. It depends on the prevailing conditions at any given time.

Jumps Course

The Haydock Park jump course is not much different from the flat course. It is also left-handed, and its fences are quite challenging for horses and jockeys. The horses have to jump over nine strategically positioned fences.

Since its redevelopment about a decade ago, the fences have become portable. The materials used to make them were changed after jockeys complained about their fitness. This track also has a water jump. The circuit is one and a half miles long.

Main Racing Events

The Lancashire Oaks

The Lancashire Oaks is undoubtedly the most anticipated racing event at the Haydock Park racecourse. This Group 2 flat horse race takes place in July each year. The race is 1 mile, 3 furlongs, and 175 yards.

Mares and fillies aged three years and older can participate in this race. Although its history dates back to 1857, it was graded in 2004.

Grand National Trial

The Grand National Trial is classified as a Grade 3 National Steeplechase in the UK. It is a race for horses aged five or older.

The race is 3 miles and 4 furlongs long. And the horses have to jump 22 fences to complete the race. The Grand National Trial takes place every February.

Sprint Cup

The Sprint Cup is a 6 furlongs Group 1 flat race for thoroughbreds aged three or more. The race takes place every September at the racecourse.

This race began in 1966. It was a race for horses aged 2 or older. Over the years, it evolved, and the organizers raised the horses’ ages to three and above.

The Betfair Chase

The Betfair Chase is a thrilling Group 1 steeplechase race for horses aged 5 or more. It is 3 miles and a furlong long. Betfair launched this race in 2005 as part of its Betfair Scheme, and it quickly became a hit for many fans.
