Dundalk stadium racecourse history

The history of the Dundalk racecourse stretches back to 120 years ago. The position of the new track is different from the original site. However, you can see the old stables as soon as you reach the entrance of the racecourse.

The old track was operational between 1899 and 2001. Most folks from Dundalk have a massive connection with this racecourse because they probably visited it while growing up.

In the early 2000s, the owners of the racecourse decided to revamp it. The budget for this project was a little over € 35 million. The designers of the new track wanted to preserve its history. Therefore, they structured it in a way that racegoers could see the old track from the entrance. Today, the new stable has a racecourse with a capacity of 130 horses.

The course

Dundalk All Weather Flat Course

In 2007, the Dundalk racecourse management unveiled a new all-weather racetrack alongside the greyhound track. Experts estimate it to have cost about €24 million.

The course boasts of an immaculate Polytrack surface. The left-handed 1 ¼ miles track is floodlit. This makes night racing possible.

The track is predominantly for a flat race. The combination of horseracing and greyhound racing makes this track unique. Most importantly, it was the first all-weather racetrack on Irish soil.

Diamond Stakes

The Diamond Stakes is one of the notable racing events at the Dundalk racecourse. This race falls in the Group 3 flat race category. Only thoroughbreds aged three or more participate in this race. It covers a 1 mile 2 furlongs and 150 yards.  And it takes place in September or October each year. The winner of this race automatically receives an invitation to the Breeder’s cup marathon. However, the organizers later withdrew it from this series. This race is tremendously competitive and no horse has won it once for several decades.

Mercury Stakes

The Mercury Stakes is a prestigious race that falls in the Group 3 flat race category. The race is only for two-year-old or more thoroughbreds. For the horses to complete this race, it has to cover 5 furlongs. And it runs every year in October. The Mercury Stakes was launched in 2008. It would take 10 years for it to become a Group 3 race. The organizers of the 2020 Mercury stakes were dedicated to Pat Smullen, a veteran Irish champion who passed on in September 2020.

The Dundalk International is an annual greyhound event that takes place at the Dundalk Stadium. From 1968 to 2000, this event took place at the Dundalk Ramparts Greyhound Stadium. Unfortunately, this track was closed in 2000 bringing this racing event to a halt until 2004 when a new racetrack was opened. Today, this event features the fastest and strongest greyhounds from the UK.

Irish sprint cup

Previously known as the Irish National Cup, the Irish Sprint is a well-respected greyhound race that takes place at the Dundalk Stadium. From 1943 to 2000, this event took place at the Dunmore Park Greyhound Stadium. But in 1996, the management of this track shut it down.
