Lingfield Racing Tips

Lingfield racecourse horse racing guide

Lingfield Park has sharp bends that challenge both the horses and the jockeys. Some of the races held on this course include all-weather races, the National Hunt, and flat racing. The course is versatile with both Polytrack and turf surfaces. And although it might not have much to boast about in terms of top-tier races, it has a lot to offer.

Linfield racecourse history

The Lingfield course ranks among the oldest race tracks in Britain. Its doors were first opened in 1890. The opening ceremony was a grand function. The Prince of Wales, who later became the king (King Edward VII) was in attendance. He was generous enough to allow Lingfield Park to use the Prince of Wales’s feathers during the opening ceremony of the racecourse. Later on, this would become a culture practised at Lingfield Park to date.

The Lingfield racecourse came at a time when numerous race tracks in Surrey had closed. As a result, there wasn’t much competition and this benefited the course immensely.

At first, the racetracks at this racecourse were designed for jump racing. Four years later, it was inspected and given the go-ahead to host flat races.

The Prince of Wales was invited to the first race, which he obliged. However, it was marred with controversy, when the winner got disqualified.

First forward, in 1989, the Lingfield racecourse made its mark in the history books as the first race track in Britain to have an all-weather track. In 2001, the management of the racecourse decided to replace the Equitrack with a Polytrack. Further developments such as the facelift of the grandstand have been done.

The course

The Lingfield Polytrack racecourse is relatively short. It runs for less than one and a quarter-mile. And even though it is a fast track, the horses and jockeys are tested to their core by the sharp bends.

Lingfield Flat Turf Course

The Turf course is more navigable with a straight track, 140 yards stretch and seven furlongs. Still, the track has several sharp bends that require horses to adapt quickly. Even though it is not used as much as the all-weather course, it has some great features, including a steep downhill that forces horses to hit top speed.

AW Flat Course

The AW Flat course has the most used racetracks. Besides being left-handed, it sits inside the turf track. Since it is a one-and-a-quarter-mile track, it certainly has sharp bends.

Jumps Course

The Jumps course is also a left-handed track. It has an intriguing terrain that is tremendously challenging for the underfoot when it rains. It tests the horse’s stamina intensely. The track is mostly bearable when there is no rain. However, the fallers on this track are somewhat low, and the fences have lost their stiffness.
