Kempton racecourse history

Samuel H Hyde, a prominent investor, came up with the idea of opening this racecourse. He came across the Kempton Manor and Park in 1872 and saw it as the perfect ground for a racecourse. At the time, this ground was for sale. It took him 6 years to lease this ground and execute his vision, which revolved around turning it into a racecourse.

In 1889, the Prince of Wales decided to attend a race at the racecourse. This prompted the park management to construct the Royal Box for the prince. And they impressively managed to pull this off within 21 days.

During the First World War, the British Army would use this racecourse as a depot for military supplies. After the war, the course was no longer in good shape. The management moved the horse races scheduled to take place on this course to Sandown, Gatwick, and Hurst Park. Later, the course contractors repaired the damaged sections of the course and races resumed. In 1997, contractors built a new state-of-the-art grandstand.  Further to that, the management added an all-weather racetrack in 2006.

About the Kempton racing course

This racecourse has a lot to offer when it comes to horse races. It is particularly famous for Grade 1 steeplechase races. Below, we explore some of the park’s finest racetracks.

Kempton All-weather racing

The all-weather racetrack, which is a flat, polytrack, right-handed racecourse, was launched in 2006 and quickly became a fan favourite.

The inner circuit is ideal for races above five or ten furlongs. And it ends with a straight that favours speeding. Unlike the inner circuit, the outer circuit is more forgiving. It does not have sharp bends and its straight stretches for 3 furlongs or so.

The National hunt

The National Hunt is another thrilling racetrack for flat meetings. The track is a triangular circuit that boasts a 220-yard run. Most horses can easily handle the fences. The Grade 1 National Chase action takes place on this track. Thoroughbreds that are four years old and above can participate in this event.

The King George IV steeplechase

The King George IV steeplechase is a top-tier horse race followed by thousands of people. It is predominantly for horses aged four years and above and takes place on 26 December yearly.

For many racegoers, it is among the highlights of the Christmas festive season. It covers about 3 miles, which is equivalent to 4,828 meters. To complete this race, horses have to skip over 18 fences.

The first King George IV steeplechase took place in February 1937. Its organizers named it after King George IV, one of the most famous British monarchs. As of today, it ranks among the top three most prestigious steeplechase races in Britain.

Kauto Star Novices Chase

The Kauto Star Novices Chase is another Grade 1 steeplechase race that takes place here. Like the King George IV steeplechase, it is a 3-mile race with 18 fences. The race takes place on 26 December every year. Horses four years of age and above can participate in this race.

Desert Orchid Chase

The Desert Orchid is a notable event held at this racecourse. This Grade 2 horse race is 2 miles long. But unlike the other main events mentioned above, it is scheduled to take place on 27 December.
